1 OceanView 1.5 Release Bulletin Today we are pleased to announce the release of OceanView 1.5. This update introduces new features and updates to make the acquisition, processing and saving of spectral data easier, quicker and better than ever. Summary of Changes and Updates released in OceanView 1.5 1) New Welcome and Application Wizard Menus. 2) New Saved Data Window watch your data save, preview saved data without leaving OceanView. 3) New Quick Dark and Reference buttons 4) Support for the new Spark and Flame Products 5) Bug Fixes and Updates Advice on how to update OceanView to version 1.5 can be found at the end of this document. If you can t wait to get going, you can go directly to the Ocean View downloads page at New Welcome and Application Wizard Menus. Ocean View has a new face! These new menus streamline the experience of getting started with OceanView or selecting a message. Choose from Quick View; Load a Saved Project or Spectroscopy Application Wizards. The Restore Last Session function is still available, just click the text below the Load Saved Project button. The show on startup tick box can be deselected if you want OceanView to default to opening in Quick View mode. 1

2 The new application wizard screen is along similar lines. It can either be selected from the welcome screen or by pressing the OceanView icon from the quick view mode. Select the technique you d like and off you go. In circumstances where there is more than one applicable choice, the wizard will prompt you to choose from a list. Each technique has an associated graphical icon, just like on the website. New Saved Data Window The Saved Data window lets you see saved data as it is stored in the active directory folder. As you create new saved files you will see the data appear. You can select the data and it will load a preview of the spectra. This lets you quickly review your saved data without leaving the OceanView window. Click this button to open!! 2

3 1. When you hit the save button your file will appear in the list. The folder is always synced to your chosen save directory folder. 2. When you select a file from the list it will appear in the preview window on the right hand side. 3. You can type and add notes directly in the notes box. These are saved as a separate file in the destination folder with the same name as the associated spectral data. The file is a TTX type that can be viewed with a text editor (I used notepad). We did explore adding these into the data file, but a separate file is simpler and more robust. 4. Any header data for things like integration time can be viewed in the Header box. 5. You can change the active save folder in the dialogue navigate to data saved elsewhere or start a new folder. 6. With time series and append series type saved data you have multiple acquisitions stored in a single file. When you preview them you don t just see a single frame, you can see them all as a stream! You can play at ~1 frame/s or step through manually to see each acquisition. 7. Auto scale automatically sizes the x and y axis to fit the available space. 8. Load the active frame as an overlay. Quick Dark and Reference Buttons When in Quick View mode many customers said they wanted to quickly create dark and reference measurements. So we ve added new buttons that let them create a new view from quick view (scope) mode without needing to go through setting up a wizard. a) Reference and Dark takes you to transmission mode scaled 0-100%. I. Click on the button and the reference is stored II. A new view opens and prompts you to take a dark III. Schematic is automatically generated as transmission mode this is the most straightforward. If you want to manually process into absorbance mode you can by using the appropriate nodes. IV. You can refresh the dark and reference spectra in the new view. 3

4 b) QuickView minus dark. I. Click and the dark is stored II. The new view window opens and the signal dark spectra is displayed. III. You can refresh the dark spectra in the new view. Support for the New Flame and Spark products. This latest version of OceanView supports the Flame and Spark products. These will install in the same way as our existing equipment. The Flame uses the same drivers as the USB2000+ and USB4000 in order to maintain backwards compatibility. It will however appear as a Flame in OceanView. The Spark uses Ocean Binary Protocol (OBP), just like the STS and the QEpro. This means you should be conscious of a couple of things: 1) The driver for OBP spectrometers is WinUSB. WinUSB requires you to be connected to the internet when you first connect the device in order to download and install correctly. 2) If you re not connected to the internet you ll need to install the drivers manually, the process for this is described in the Engineering Note, Correcting Device Driver Issues. Bug Fixes and Updates OceanView 1.5 also introduces a host of other upgrades and bug fixes. The most important are detailed below: The way files are saved has been improved to make file saving faster! On a windows 7 HP notebook, we observed a 16% improvement in the maximum saved data rate, from 350 scans/second to 406 scans/second (at 1ms integration time). On a high performance MacBook pro with i7 processor and solid state hard drive, Kevin was able to capture 770 spectra per second!! Stripcharts now support saving, meaning you can configure and save data from a stripchart direct to a file. Previously this required the generation of a scalar value that could then be saved. The way memory for saved data is allocated has been changed to overcome a bug that saw out of memory errors that caused saved data to be corrupted. Java 8 updates this fixes bugs when running on the most recent versions of Apple operating systems. With PeakFinder you can now select intensity (y axis) values as a peak metric. QE65pro pixel shift issue has been resolved. Help functions have been updated. Driver files for the QEpro and Spark have been updated to make it easier for people to do a manual install when they are not connected to the internet. This will also help avoid the two driver issue where people could end up with the wrong version of the winusb driver. Save files, bug where header data would not update has been resolved. 4

5 How to Update OceanView Updating OceanView is easy and can be completed one of two ways, by updating through the software or downloading directly from our website. In OceanView: 1. Go to the help menu 2. Click Check for Updates 3. Follow the prompts/ Directly from the all new 1. Click the link below and choose the download that corresponds to your operating system Once the file has finished downloading, run the application and follow the prompts to install OceanView. Other Notes: When using with Windows 32-Bit Operating Systems: The change to WinUSB from ezusb may cause an issue for those working on a 32-bit windows operating system for those still using Spectrasuite. It is recommended that you choose not to install the WinUSB on 32 bit machines if you still use OOIbase32 or Spectrasuite. This will be promoted as an option when you download the 32-bit version of OceanView. 5
