1 Support - Software Lessons Drawmate v. 9 Corel Clipart (Complex) This lesson is designed to show you how to create a contour and cut line for a clipart design from Corel. 1 2 This lesson gives you the steps needed if the selected clipart file does not have one overall outside shape that can be selected and a contour added. Please also note that this is the manual way to create the cutting shape for clipart. This lesson is designed to take you to the next level, giving you a better understanding of what you can create with Corel and Drawmate. Please refer to Lesson 7 part 1 for information on using Drawmate to achieve the same effect in less steps. First you will need to place a clipart design on the page. This lesson uses a specific file. It is suggested that you use the same file to understand this lesson. Select Window from the top of the screen. From the drop down menu select Dockers. This will cause a fly -out menu to appear, from the fly-out menu, select Scrapbook then Clipart. 3 The Scrapbook menu will be placed at the right of the screen. Select the Collection folder to open the list of clipart directories by double clicking on the folder. Scroll down the list and double click on the Sports folder to open it. Once the Sports folder is open, double click on Baseball. This will open the Baseball folder and display the files available in that folder. 4 5 Scroll down through the files and select batter.cdr. Drag the file to the page and release the mouse button. This will place the clipart design on the page. Click off of the design. (This means to click on the desktop outside of the page.) In the Property Bar, set the Nudge to 2 inches and the Duplicate placement to 0 and 0. 6 Select the clipart design. With the clipart design selected, select Edit and Duplicate from the top of the screen. This will cause a duplicate copy to be placed on top of the original. Press the right arrow key to move the new copy to the right. Continue to move the new copy until it is not touching the original. 7 Press the right arrow key to move the new copy to the right. Continue to move the new copy until it is not touching the original. With the new copy still selected, select the color black from the color palette with both the left and right mouse buttons.

2 This will set both the fill and outline to black in the design. The design will now look like a silhouette. 8 With it still selected, select Bitmap from the top of the screen. From the drop down menu select Convert to Bitmap from the top of the list. 9 The Convert to Bitmap menu will be displayed. In the selection box for the color, select the down arrow and select Black and White 1bit. Set the Resolution by selecting the down arrow and choosing 300. Make sure that there is not a check mark in Anti-aliasing or Dithered. Then select OK on the right side of the menu. This will cause the clipart to be converted into a bitmap file, similar to having scanned the file With the art converted, select Bitmap from the top of the screen again. This time select Trace Bitmap from the drop down menu. This will take the file into Corel Trace. Select Trace from the top of the screen. From the drop down menu, select By Outline and the file will be traced. Select File and Return Trace Results from the top of the screen. This will return you back to Corel Draw with the traced design. The Traced design will be selected. Press the right arrow key on the keyboard twice to move the traced design to the right. Select the bitmap design, it should be the one in the middle and delete it by pressing the Delete key on the keyboard.

3 15 Select the Traced design, it should be the one on the right. 16 With the Traced design selected, make sure that the status line reads curve on layer one. If it reads group on layer one, select Arrange and Ungroup from the top of the screen. Then delete the extra shapes leaving only the overall outside shape. You may need to view this in the Wireframe mode, select View and Wireframe. 17 With the overall outside shape selected, select the interactive Contour Tool from the Tool bar. Select the eleventh tool down on the tool bar. Hold the button down and the tool fly -out menu will be displayed. From this menu, select the second tool. 18 The properties bar should then change to look similar to the following. Note: Some of the settings may be slightly different than the menu shown. 19 The third, forth and fifth option controls how the contour will be placed on the Traced design. The third option will place the contour to the center of the Traced design. The fourth option will place the contour to the inside of the Traced design and the fifth option will place the contour to the outside of the Traced design. 20 It is this fifth option that you will need to use. Once you select the fifth option, Contour to Outside, Corel will process the information and the screen will redrawn with the contour added to the Traced design. Note: If the fifth option is already selected, select the fourth option, wait for Corel to process the information, then reselect the fifth option. 21 Depending on the settings, it may now look like a big blob. This will happen if the fill color for the object is the same as the contour. In the sample shown the contour is orange. On the right side of the Properties Bar are two controls for the color used by the contour. The first option controls the color of the outline, because there isn t any outline on the Traced design, it is not necessary for you to change this color. The second option controls the fill color. Select the down arrow to the right of the color chip and select any color other than black. Note: This color will print, if you want a white contour select white as your color. Although the printer will not print white, the material is white and will create the white contour. Once you have selected a new color, Corel will process the change and the screen will be redrawn with the color change. 22 The next option that you may have to change (depending on your systems settings), is the number of steps the contour is using. The sixth option from the left controls the number of steps the contour will use.

4 For this lesson, set the steps to 1. If this information is set to any other number, pull through the number and type in 1 and press the enter key on the key board. Corel will process the change and the Traced design will be redrawn with one additional shape. 23 The next option that you may need to change controls the size of the contour. Select the seventh option from the left, the Contour Offset. For this lesson set this option to.05, Corel will then process the change and redraw the Traced design on the screen. 24 Now without clicking off the Traced design, select the Pick Tool from the Tool Bar. If you have clicked off the Traced design, you will need to click on the new contour shape to select the correct component for the next step. 25 From the top of the screen, select Arrange and Separate from the drop down menu. You will not see any difference on the screen, but the contour is now no longer attached to the Traced design. Click off of the Traced design so that nothing is selected. Select on the inside of the Traced design. With just the inside shape selected, press the delete key to delete this shape. This shape is no longer needed. It was used to create the contour shape that will become the cutting shape for the design. Once the original shape is deleted, select the contour shape, It should be the only shape left on the right side. The cut line needs to be added to the shaped. 26 With the new contour selected, select the Outline Tool from the Tool Bar. Hold the button down and the Outline Tool fly-out menu will be displayed. Select the first tool on the fly out. This will bring up the Outline Pen menu At the top of the menu is the color chip. Select the color chip, then Other at the bottom of the drop down menu. This will activate the Select Color menu. Select the Models tab at the top of the menu. In the Model settings box select the down arrow, then select RGB. In the Components section of the menu set the R, G, and B all to 255. This will give you a pure white color for the outline.

5 Select OK at the bottom of the menu and you will be taken back to the Outline Pen menu. 30 You will now need to set the width of the outline. This needs to be set to the smallest outline that Corel can make. Hold down on the down arrow for the width setting until the setting will not go any smaller. If you are measuring in inches, the setting will be.00005, if you are measuring in points, the setting will be.004. It is also a good idea to check the calligraphy settings. The Stretch should be set to 100 and the Angle at 0. If these setting are different you need to change them. With all of these options set, select the OK button at the bottom of the menu The status line should now tell you Outline: White 0.0 inches or points. You will not be able to see the outline on the screen because it is white on a white page. Now move the shape back to the original clipart. Use the left arrow key on the keyboard to move the shape back to the left to line up with the original clipart. The shape may be placed on top of the original. If this happens, with the shape still selected, select Arrange, Order and To Back from the top of the screen. This will cause the shape to be placed behind the original clipart design. Group the entire design together. Select Edit from the top of the screen. From the drop down menu, select Select All and Objects. To group the design, select Arrange and Group from the top of the screen. The design will be grouped together, if you should change the size it is always a good idea to recheck the size of the outline to make sure that it has not changed. 36 Now with the cutline added to the design, you need to set the page so that it is just a little larger than the design. Select Drawmate from the top of the screen. Select CAD-COLOR Tools, then Set CC Page Size from the flyout menu. The page size will be changed so that it is just large enough to contain the design. You are now ready to send the graphic to print and cut. Remember to save the design and check the settings in the print menu before sending the information down to the output device.
