1 STAT 243 Lab 3 Rachel Webb 25 points This lab should be done using Microsoft Excel available in all PSU computer labs. A hard copy of your output is to be handed in to during lecture on the due date posted in the D2L calendar. This is NOT a group project and you should all be doing this individually. To get started, open Microsoft Excel. 1. Make a bar graph in Excel. (1.5 points) Copy the following table into two columns under a blank worksheet in Excel. Soft Drink Frequency Coke Classic 19 Diet Coke 8 Dr. Pepper 5 Pepsi-Cola 13 Sprite 5 Highlight the entire table. Select the Insert tab on the toolbar. Use Column 2D Chart (don t use Bar Chart they gives a horizontal bar graph). You should now see a generic bar graph like you see below. Under Design, choose one of the 16 layouts that you prefer, there is a drop down menu for more options. Change the color of the bars by selecting one of the following colors found under Change Colors. You can print in Black & White so choose something that will have a good contrast with your background colors. You need to title the graph Soft Drink Purchases, click on the word Frequency then change the text. Title the x-axis Soft Drink and the y-axis Frequency. When you have the graph selected there should be a green plus sign on the upper right hand side of the graph. Select this, then under Chart Elements select Axis Titles, then click on the text in each axis title to change. Copy the bar graph and resize so it fits nicely under your name on a Word document. You will then copy and paste the remaining graphs and tables under your bar graph.
2 2. Make a pie chart in Excel. (1.5 points) Use the previous Soft Drink table. Highlight the entire table. Select the Insert tab on the toolbar. Use Pie 2D. Under Chart design select layout and color of your choice. Change the title of the graph to Soft Drink Purchases. Under Chart Elements, unselect the Legend box, select the Data Labels box, then select to the right of Data Labels, More Options. This will give you the Label Options on the right side of your screen. Check Category Name and Percentage, unselect Value. If you did this correctly you should now see each soft drink name and percent in the pie wedges. If you make your pie graph smaller, then the label may be out of the wedge, but make sure you have the Show Leader Lines selected. the pie graph and resize so it fits nicely under the bar graph from question 2. Copy 3. Make a time series graph in Excel. (2 points) Year Male Female The number of master s degrees received for Males and Females Copy the data into Excel; highlight only the Male and Female columns including the labels. Click on the Insert, and choose Line 2D You should get the following: Male Female Title the graph Master's Degrees Earned by Gender, the x-axes Year, and the y-axis Master s Degrees.
3 Right click on the legend and Select Data. Then click Edit under the Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels. With your mouse, highlight the years from 1980 to 1997, do not select the label. Note that cell references may be different for your lab depending on where your data table is on the Excel page. Then select OK Copy the graph below problem Make a side by side bar graph in Excel. The following table of 300 LA restaurant ratings. (2 points) Quality Rating $10-19 $20-29 $30-39 $40-49 Good Very Good Excellent Copy the table to our Excel worksheet. Select the entire table including all the labels. Click on the Insert, and choose Column 2D. Choose a layout and colors that you like. Title the graph Quality Ratings for 300 LA Restaurants, Meal Price for the x-axis and Frequency for the y-axis. You want to leave the legend in the graph. When you are done you should have 3 bars for each of the 4 price categories, see screenshot below.
4 After you change the titles, copy the graph below problem Use Excel to find the mean, variance and standard deviation of the following discrete probability distribution. (6 points) Powerball is a multi-state lottery. The following probability distribution represents the cash prizes of Powerball with their corresponding probabilities, where the grand prize for this drawing was 15 million dollars. If you were to play the game over and over again, your expected net revenue would be the mean of the distribution. Use Excel to find the mean, variance and standard deviation cash prize for the following discrete probability distribution. x (cash prize $) P(x) Copy the probability table to a new worksheet in Excel starting in cell A6. Next to the first probability find the value of X 2 *P(X) for each value, then sum them up, this will be the first part of the variance formula. I have done an example below, but you may have to change the cell reference numbers. In this example the first probability would have been in row 6. Then find the mean by taking the sum of X*P(X) by using the SumProduct function as seen below. The variance will be the sum of X 2 *P(X) minus the mean squared, see below. The standard deviation is the square root of the variance. For example if your first x value of was in cell A6 then you would use the following formulas. Of course you will have to change the cell reference numbers to wherever you have placed your first x value. =A6^2*B6 =A7^2*B7 =A8^2*B8 =A9^2*B9 =A10^2*B10 =A11^2*B11 =A12^2*B12 =A13^2*B13 Mean Variance St Dev =SUM(C6:C13) =SUMPRODUCT(A6:A13,B6:B13) =C14-D14^2 =SQRT(E14)
5 Make sure you label and highlight your 3 answers. Format your answers to 7 decimal places. Then copy over the entire table to your Word Document below the previous problem. If your numbers change to scientific notation select the cells that need to be changed. Then select the comma style button under Number on the Home ribbon. Then select the increase decimal place button until you get all 7 decimal places. You may have to widen your column to see the labels and numbers correctly. Once you copy your tables with the answers to your Word document, you may have to adjust your column widths to read the entire number. 6. (3 points) The unemployment rate in September 2013 was 7.3%. Using Excel, create a Binomial distribution table if 10 employable adults are selected at random. a. Below the previous problem, label a column Unemployed X and type in all possible x-values from 0 to 10 in that column. b. In the next column label it Binomial P(X) c. Click on the empty cell (B19 adjust if you started your table in a different cell) next to where your zero is. d. Click on Insert then choose Paste Function. Or you can choose the icon fx. e. Choose Statistical as the category. f. Select BINOM.DIST, then click OK.
6 g. Complete the dialog box as shown below and click OK Click into the box and then click on cell A19 (or where ever your zero is). Enter the numeric value of n from the problem. Enter the numeric value of p from the problem. Enter 0 here h. Now copy that cell down column B so that you have a probability for each value of X. i. Format your column to 6 decimal places, no scientific notation. j. Highlight the cell that has the answer to the following question: What is the probability that exactly 2 out of the 10 adults will be unemployed? Copy this entire table to your Word document below the previous problem. 7. (3 points) The number of students who seek assistance with their assignments is Poisson distributed with a mean of 10 per day. Using Excel, create a Poisson probability table. a. Label Column C (to the right of the Binomial Table) Students X and type in x-values from 0 to 30. b. Label Column D Poisson P(X) c. Click on the empty cell (D19) next to where your zero is. d. Click on Insert then choose Paste Function. e. Choose Statistical as the category. f. Select POISSON.DIST, then click OK
7 g. Complete the dialog box as shown below and click OK. Click into the box and then click on cell C17 (where your zero is). Enter the numeric value of from the problem. Enter 0 here h. Now copy that cell down column D so that you have a probability for each value of X. i. Format your column to 6 decimal places, no scientific notation. j. Highlight the cell that has the answer to the following question: What is the probability that exactly 6 students in a day will seek assistance with their assignment? Copy this entire table to your Word document below the previous problem. 8. Using Excel, find the probabilities for the following problem: (3 points) Under the system of floating exchange rates, the rate of foreign money to the U.S. dollar is affected by many factors, and this leads to the assumption of a normal distribution of small daily fluctuations. The rate of U.S. dollars per Euro is believed in a certain period to have a mean of 1.19 and a standard deviation of Find the following: a. The probability that tomorrow's rate will be above b. The probability that tomorrow's rate will be below c. The probability that tomorrow's exchange rate will be between 1.16 and Format answers out to 11 decimal places and number your answers, do not use the tables in your book or your calculator. Click into the blank cell where you want your answer to appear, then click on the
8 paste function icon fx, then select NORM.DIST from the statistical menu (see below). This will only give you cumulative probabilities from negative infinity to the x value you enter P(X<x), so you will need to subtract from 1 or subtract two answers in a new cell depending on the problem. Select all your work and answers and copy-paste into your Word document below the previous problem. 9. (2 points) Using Excel, find the two weights for the following problem. The weights of domestic, adult cats are normally distributed with a mean of pounds and a standard deviation of 0.87 pounds. A cat food manufacturer sells three types of foods for underweight, normal, and overweight cats. The manufacturer considers the bottom 5% of the cats underweight and the top 10% of the cats overweight. Compute the two weights that give the cutoff points for the three categories. Format answers out to 11 decimal places and number your answers, do not use the tables in your book or your calculator. Click into the blank cell where you want your answer to be, then click on the paste function icon fx, then select NORM.INV from the statistical menu. The probability is the lower tail only so you may have to do some math before you type in a probability. Select all your work and answers and copy-paste into your Word document below the previous problem. 10. (1 point) You get one point for editing for the following: Type your name in the upper left hand corner of your lab. Have all the graphs and tables placed in the correct order. Resize your graphs to make them smaller to fit on the page and not waste paper, but still be able to read the labels. Make sure your columns are wide enough to read all your labels in the tables. Staple your pages together.
