1 How to lower a car in Paint.NET (PDN) -Tools you will be using: Lasso select tool Move selected pixels tool Zoom (magnifying glass) tool Erase tool Color picker tool Paintbrush tool 1. Start by opening your copy of Paint.NET - I trust you know how to do this. Your screen should look like the following:

2 2. Open the car you will want to lower. For this lesson, I will be using a Suzuki Kizashi. Save this picture by *right click* *save image as*. Or, you could just copy the picture and paste it on PDN. Image has been scaled down 31% (710x533). Click this bar to view original image (1024x768). Click image to open in new window.

3 Go to File Open Locate picture on your computer Click open on the dialog box

4 You now have your picture open, which is sometimes referred a "donor car". Your screen should look like this.

5 3. Go to the left side of the screen to where the tool bar is. It will always be on the left, unless you moved it beforehand. 4. Click on the 2nd icon down on the left. This is called the "Lasso Select". 5. There are 2 ways to go through with this. Selecting the bottom part of the picture that has the tires and shadow, or selecting the top part of the picture that has the car's body and background. You can do either way. I prefer to select from the car body upward instead of the tires downward as it is less work. For this demonstration, I will use that technique. 6. Draw around the parts you want to select. This

6 means the entire bottom of the car, except for the wheels and the space between the wheels and fenders. It is not mandatory to do this perfectly, but go "outside the lines", or select parts of the wheels if you have to. This can be easily fixed, but can't if you select THROUGH the car. If you select through the car, start over again. 7. Now, copy your selected car, using CTRL + C. Go to the LAYERS box, which should be in the right lower corner, unless you moved it. The only layer on it so far should be the "background" layer.

7 8. Click on the "New Layer" button, which is a square with a green + in the corner of it in the lower right corner of the layers box. Paste your selection onto the new layer ("Layer 2"), using CTRL + V. You should see the selected part of the car on the new layer.

8 9. Select "Layer 2" in the layer box and go to the tool box, select "Move selected pixels", a blue or black arrow. You can now use either your mouse or the up and down arrows on your keyboard to lower the car by clicking and dragging or pressing the down arrow. The idea here is to drop the care neatly. You can zoom in, using the "Zoom" tool, by left clicking, and right clicking to zoom out if it helps. When you're finished lowering, press CTRL + D to "deselect" the selection. It will no longer have a line around it. 10. You may now notice that you have black spots around the wheel wells from where you selected

9 "outside the lines". This is easy to fix. Make sure you're on Layer 2 using the layer box, then select the "Eraser" tool in the toolbox, a pink and white rectangle. Find the "brush width" (up at the very top of the screen, under "Image", "Layers" and "Adjustments" tabs. It should be set to a width of 2, change it to about 10. Now, zoom in to the wheel wells, and start to erase the black spots. If your background isn't white, you may have to delete some parts of your background to make it look right. 11. Once you are finished with that, zoom back out to 100%, and look at what you've done. If it doesn't

10 look quite right, click CTRL + A on Layer 2, then go to the "Move selected pixels" tool, and move the layer up or down until it looks right. 12. The car is now lowered, and looks great, except for one thing. You may notice white spots or spots of the background in your wheel wells. This is very easy to fix. Just head over to the toolbox, and click on the "Color Picker" tool (green and white eyedropper). Then, move it on some black that is left in the wheel wells, and click on that. You'll notice in the Color Window that it has picked up this black color. If it hasn't, and the color window shows tat you've picked up a white and grey checkerboard, change the layer that you're on then try again. Once you've picked up a color, go back to layer 2, and select the "brush" tool (black paintbrush) and brush in where it isn't black.

11 When you are finished with all of these steps, your lowered car should look something like this: Now, I will go over saving your picture To save the finished car, either click CTRL + S or go to File > Save or Save As. Name your file, and click save. It will save your picture as a.pdn file, which is

12 a file code unique to Paint.NET. This file code will save all of your layers, and is ideal to use for saving something that isn't finished. However, if you'd like to upload it here, you'll have to save it as a.png. What will happen when you change it from a.pdn to a.png, is it will ask you if you want to FLATTEN the picture. What this does, is merge all of the layers into one. Once this has happened, you can't raise or lower your car anymore.
