5 Welcome to West Central Video Service! This booklet explains how you can use and customize your WCTA Video service to best fit your needs. This guide explores: Channel surfing options Searching for programs Creating Favorites lists Setting up parental controls Creating autotunes and reminders Using the Menu options for other system settings and features This guide assumes: Your West Central Video system has been properly installed, connected to your entertainment system, and tested Your remote control has batteries and has been programmed as required You have reviewed the West Central Video Quick Start Guide and can perform the basic functions explained in the guide 4

6 Introduction What is IPTV? IPTV, (also sometimes referred to as Digital TV ), stands for Internet Protocol Television. With IPTV, hundreds of channels of TV programming are encoded into a digital format and sent over your telephone lines to a special set-top box; and from there can be viewed on any regular TV set. IPTV is different from Internet TV in that IPTV allows you to watch a complete suite of regularly scheduled and live TV programming instantly. With internet TV, your choices of programs are limited often to programs from the past--and you have to either download the programs or try stream them live, which can give inferior viewing results. Internet TV can also only be viewed on computer monitors or internet enabled televisions. What is a Set-Top Box? In order to decode the digital TV signal from West Central Video, each television set must be connected to a specially configured West Central Video Set-Top box (STB). The Set-Top Box contains a small processor that stores the software and interactive program guide that you ll use to control your TV viewing experience. You interact with the system using the remote control that came with your STB. 5

7 Important Information about Your Set-Top Box The set-top box should be plugged into a properly surge protected electrical outlet. The Power button on the remote control does not power off the set-top box, it merely changes the set-top box from On to Standby mode. You must unplug the unit from the power source to fully turn it off. The LED light on the front of the box stays lit as long as there is power coming to the box. If the set-top box loses power, it will reboot the next time you turn it on. This process takes approximately 1 ½ minutes, and may require a login when the reboot completes. When you power the STB off and on again using the remote control, it does not reboot. You are either returned to the last channel or screen you were viewing when you turned the STB to standby, or to the login screen if you signed out. Several days of program guide information is stored right on your set-top box. The only time you ll have to wait for system and program guide downloads is after you ve rebooted the unit. If you have an ADB set-top box and are unable to view the program guide, especially after a reboot, the screen resolution setting on your box might have been accidentally changed. If you have a Resolution ( RES ) button the front of the box, push the button, give the TV a moment to adjust, and try pressing the Guide button on your remote again. Repeat this process until you find the correct resolution setting. Screen resolution button for ADB boxes If you have an ADB box that does not have a Resolution (RES) button, press the Green button on your remote, then press the number corresponding to the highest resolution available on your TV: 6

Depending on the wiring to and inside your house, and the complexity of your home entertainment system, a variety of other routers and/or converters may also be used. Refer to the set-top box User Guide for a full explanation of your configuration options, safety advisories, and FCC notices. 7

9 Getting Started: Using Your Remote Control You use your remote control to access and navigate through your video service options. Before You Begin Make sure your TV and Set-Top box are powered on. Your remote must be in the proper mode (typically CBL or STB ) and pointed at the set-top box. (On some remotes, you can also do most cable functions while in the TV mode.) If the system doesn t seem to be responding to your inputs, you might be in the wrong mode. Some set-top boxes require you to have the correct resolution setting for your TV for certain functions such as the Guide to work. See the previous section, Important Information about your Set-Top Box for more information. To put the remote in STB/Cable mode: Follow the instructions that came with your remote to put it in the correct mode. (Typically you will press the STB, CBL, or TV button.) If the remote doesn t seem to be responding to anything you do, it might need a new battery. Using the Navigation Options Once the equipment is on and the remote is in STB/CBL mode, you can navigate through the system using the following buttons. C. B. D. A. Number Keypad Buttons Use to enter a specific channel number to view, as well as PINs A and passwords.. B. Channel Up/Down Button Use to surf up and down through the channels that are included in the selected viewing (Guide) list. C. Up/Down/Left/Right Arrow Buttons Use to browse through the interactive guide information while keeping the current channel in view. Also use to move from field to field when presented with screen options. 8

10 D. OK Button On many interactive screens, a border appears around the area that is currently selected (referred to as highlight in this guide). To submit a selection, press the middle OK button. Some interactive screens require you to arrow down to a box that says OK or Submit and then press the OK button on your remote to submit your input. Cancelling a Selection To cancel out of any selection, do one of the following: If the screen displays a Cancel field, use the navigation arrows to highlight the Cancel field and press the OK button on your remote. To quickly cancel out of an option and return to your TV viewing, press the Exit button on your remote. Other Remote Control buttons Refer to the West Central Video Quick Start Guide and/or the user guide that came with your remote for more information on other remote control buttons. 9

11 Using the Interactive Program Guide Introduction The on-screen program guide provides a complete listing of the available channels and programs. You can use the program guide to change channels, to see what programs are scheduled, and to set autotunes and reminders to watch a program in the future. You can block channels from being displayed in the program guide. You can also create individualized Favorites lists showing just your favorite programs. These options are discussed later in this manual. Opening the Program Guide To open the program guide, do one of the following: 1. Press the Guide button on the remote control. or 1. Press the Menu button on your remote to display the Menu bar. 2. Use the left/right arrows to highlight the Guide icon box, and press OK. Some set-top boxes require you to have the correct resolution setting for your TV for certain functions such as the Guide to work. See the section, Important Information about your Set- Top Box for more information. 10

12 Understanding Program Guide Lists The tab at the top left of the program guide shows the name of the program guide list you are currently viewing. Each user will have access to the following guide lists: All: Shows all channels available in your video package. Subscribed: Same as All; shows all channels in your video package. SD: Shows all Standard Definition channels in your video package. HD: Shows all High Definition channels in your video package (only displays if you re subscribed to HD service.) Favorites: Up to 4 personalized favorites lists can be created per user. Channels that were blocked using Preferences/Channel Blocking will not appear on any Guide lists. To view a different Guide list: Continue pressing the Guide button until the desired list appears. Other Information on the Program Guide The program guide displays the following information for all channels included in the displayed guide: Channel number and name Program name scheduled for that time slot Symbols which provide the following additional information about the program if applicable: 11

13 A star next to the program indicates it is a new episode for that channel HD indicates the program is available in High Definition TV. A yellow clock indicates a reminder has been set to watch the program. An orange arrow next to the program means an autotune has been scheduled. Restricted means the program is blocked by Parental Controls. (Program name will not appear.) You may see additional symbols if you subscribe to West Central Video DVR service. Refer to the DVR User Guide for more information. Working with the Program Guide The program guide gives you several options. You can select a program to view, see what is scheduled for the future, schedule a reminder or autotune to view a program in the future, and view additional information about a program. To select a program or channel to view when the Guide is open: 1. Use the number pad buttons to enter the desired channel number. The program guide displays a block of channels from the selected guide list near that number, including the one that you just entered if it is included in the guide list (otherwise you will be presented only with the channels closest to that number). And/or 1. Use the Up/Down/Left/Right arrow buttons to find and highlight the desired program. You can scroll up and down through the channels one at a time, use the Page Up and Page down buttons to scroll blocks at a time, or use the right arrow key to see future programming on a channel. 2. To view a program, press the OK button on your remote to highlight it; then press the OK button again to view the program in full screen. 12

14 To view information about a program: Some information on the currently selected program is displayed in the top right corner above the Guide (A). Sometimes additional information on the program is available (B) by pressing the Info button on your remote. A B You can see information about programs scheduled for the future using the instructions below. To see information about, or set an Event, Auto-Tune or a Reminder to view a program in the future: 1. With the program guide open, use the right arrow button to view future programming on a channel. 2. When the desired program is selected, press the OK button on your remote. 3. A window appears giving you the following options. Arrow down to the desired option and press the OK button. Continued 13

15 You will see additional options if you have DVR service. Refer to the DVR Guide for more information. Schedule Event: Schedule an autotune or reminder for specific times/days. Set Reminder: Before the program begins (at the amount of time you selected on your Settings/Preferences), you will receive a reminder message asking if you want to tune to the program. Set Auto Tune: Before the program begins (at the amount of time you selected on your Settings/Preferences), you will automatically tune to the program. Expanded Info: Shows information about the program (same as if you press the Info button on your remote). Cancel: Cancel the action and return to the program guide. To close the program guide: Do one of the following: Select a channel (press OK to highlight it; then press OK again to select it). or Press the Exit button. 14

16 Searching for a Program by Name Another way to find a program is to search for it by name. To open the Search box: 1. Press the Menu button on your remote. 2. If not already highlighted, use the left/right arrows on your remote to highlight the Search icon box (with a picture of a magnifying glass). 3. Press the OK button. The Search window appears. To enter text in the Search box: 1. With the text box highlighted (A), press the OK button on your remote. This brings up the onscreen text box (B). B A. 2. Use the left/right/up/down navigation arrows on your remote to highlight a letter. Press the OK button on your remote to select it. 3. Continue until all letters are entered in the text box. Use the Space field if you need to put a space between characters. 15

17 To delete text: 1. Use the navigation arrows to place the cursor on the box that says Clear to clear the all text in the text box, or on the Delete box to delete one character at a time. Press the OK button on your remote. You can also press the Delete button on your remote to delete one character at a time. To begin the search: 1. After you ve entered your text, arrow down to the Done field (A) and press the OK button on your remote. This removes the text entry box. A. B 2. Arrow down to the Search box (B) and press the OK button on your remote. All programs with your text entry in the title are displayed. 16

18 To work with programs displayed in the search results: 1. Use the up/down arrows on your remote to scroll through the list of results. Note that the results are not displayed in chronological order. 2. With a program highlighted, press the OK button on your remote. If the program is currently on, you are brought to that channel to begin viewing. OR If the program is scheduled for the future, you are presented with the following options: Refer to the instructions, To see information about, or set an Event, Auto-Tune or a Reminder to view a program in the future for more information on these options. 17

19 Browsing Programs In addition to using the Guide and Search functions to look for programs to watch, you can also browse through a list s programming options one channel at a time, while still keeping the current channel in full screen view. As with the Guide, you will only see the channels assigned to the Guide list that you have selected (All, Subscribed, SD, HD, or any Favorites lists you created.) To browse channels from a different list, press the Guide button on your remote until the desired list appears and press the OK button on your remote. To browse through a list s program options: 1. Press the up/down arrows. Program information is displayed for the selected channel/time in a bar at the bottom of the screen (A), as shown in the example below. A To select a program to view while browsing: 1. Press the OK button on your remote. To cancel browsing: Press the Exit button. Or The program information will disappear after approximately 10 seconds. You can see what programs are scheduled in the future for a channel displayed while browsing by pressing the right arrow button. You can set an autotune or reminder to view a future program displayed while browsing by pressing the OK button on your remote. 18

20 Working with Favorites Lists Understanding Favorites Lists Use Favorites lists to streamline your viewing experience. When a favorites list is active, you can browse through just those channels that you ve included in your list. Favorites lists can be used to group programming by theme (for example, sports, movies, and cartoons) and/or by person. A favorites list can have as many channels as you like. You can create up to 4 lists for each user. To create a Favorites list: Favorites lists are specific to users. If you have set up different user accounts and are logged in as a different user, you will not see your Favorites lists. See the section, Understanding Users for more information. 1. Press the Menu button on your remote. 2. Use the left/right arrow buttons to move the highlight to the Favorites box (has a heart symbol) and press the OK button on your remote. 3. Use the up/down arrow buttons to highlight the Create box, and press the OK button on your remote. 19

21 The Favorites setup screen appears, as shown below. 4. Follow the instructions below to enter a name and select the channels for the favorites list. To enter a name for the Favorites list: 1. The Name box should be highlighted. You may use the default name, or to type in a new name, with the name box highlighted, press the OK button. The Text Entry screen appears. 2. When you have entered all the letters in the name, move the cursor to the Done box on the text entry screen and press the OK button on your remote. 20

22 To select the channels for the new Favorites list: 1. Use left/right/up/down arrows on your remote to move the highlight to the channel list on the left side of the screen. 2. Bring the highlight to a channel you want to add to the Favorites list and press the OK button. A heart will appear to the right of the channel listing. 3. Continue moving the highlight to each channel you want to add and press OK after each selection. 4. When you ve completed your selections, bring the highlight to the Update box and press the OK button on your remote. To modify a Favorites list: 1. Press the Menu button on your remote. 2. Use the left/right arrow buttons to move the highlight to the Favorites box (with the heart symbol) and press the OK button on your remote. 3. Use the up/down arrow buttons to highlight the Edit box, and press the OK button. The Favorites Edit selection screen appears: 4. Use the up/down arrow buttons on your remote to scroll through the existing Favorites lists. When the name of the list you want to edit shows, move the highlight to the OK box and press the OK button on your remote. 21

23 5. Follow the instructions above to change the name, or change your favorite channel selections. To delete a Favorites list: To remove a channel from a Favorites list, highlight the channel and press OK. The heart symbol should no longer appear next to the channel. 1. Press the Menu button on your remote. 2. Use the left/right arrow buttons to move the highlight to the Favorites box (with the heart symbol) and press the OK button on your remote. 3. Use the left/right/up/down arrow buttons to highlight the Edit box, and press the OK button. The Favorites Delete selection screen appears: 4. Use the up/down arrow buttons on your remote to scroll through the existing Favorites list. When the name of the list you want to edit shows, move the highlight to the OK box and press the OK button on your remote. Using Favorites Lists You must be signed in as the user the Favorites list was created under in order to use it. To select a Favorites list: 1. Press the Guide button on your remote. 2. Look at the tab on the top left of the guide. If it is not the desired Favorites list, press the Guide button until the list you want appears. 22

24 3. Press the OK button on your remote. To surf the channels on a favorites list: After selecting the list as explained above, you can browse through your channel options by: With the program guide opened and your list selected, press the up/down arrow buttons to see what other programs are on your list; Or With the favorites list already selected, while viewing one program you can scroll through the list one channel at a time by pressing the up/down navigation arrows, or the channel up/down buttons. To view a channel not on the current list: You can enter the channel number on the number keypad. Or You can press the Guide button until you get a list that includes the desired channel. Working with Users WCTA video service provides a pre-set Primary User for each account (household). The Primary User has access to many options as explained below, and can create additional sub-users. To change settings, the Primary User will need to enter a password or PIN, which will be provided to the head of the household at the time of installation. Any changes to settings made by a user on one set-top box will apply to all set-top boxes in the household. Understanding the Primary User The Primary User is the only user with access to several system options. Each WCTA video account comes with a Primary User already created, and each set-top box assigned to the account shares that Primary User. There can only be one Primary User per account (household). Some of the options given to the Primary User, that aren t given to any sub-users you might create, include: Globally blocking channels for all users (including the Primary User). Channels that are blocked will not even appear as options in the guide. Globally blocking types of programs for all users. 23

25 Blocked programs (as opposed to blocked channels) will appear in the Guide but will say, Restricted. Selecting the Password and PIN that can override blocked channels and other parental controls. Adding, deleting, or changing sub-users, and setting up unique parental control settings for each user. Creating Pay-Per-View rules and sub-user spending allowances. (Not applicable this release.) Your Primary User Login name is: _(your last name) Your Primary User password is: _(default is 0, you should change) Your Primary User PIN is: (default is 0, you should change) Many households find that the parental controls and blocking options provided to the Primary User are all that are needed to control the family viewing experience. You simply select the content and channels you want blocked, and the system will require a PIN or password to view those programs or change the settings. Understanding Sub-Users Some households may prefer to create additional customized sub-users. For example, in a house with adults, teenagers, and small children, you could create three users the Primary User with access to all programming, a sub-user with access to teen-appropriate programming, and another sub-user with access to nothing but young children s programming. Sub-users can have: Unique sign-on, password and PINs Customized parental control settings Customized favorites lists Pay-Per-View spending allowance (not applicable this release). See the section, Working with Users for more information on creating users, and the sections Understanding Parental Controls and Working with Parental Controls for more information on that topic. 24

26 Using the Menu Bar Options The Menu Bar provides the following options. Some options are not available to all users. (See the previous section, Understanding Users, for a full explanation.) To select a Menu Bar option: Use the left and right arrows to navigate to an option so that it is highlighted, then press the OK button on your remote. 26

28 Working with Caller ID TV Screen Pop Caller ID TV screen pop is a service provided by WCTA. When subscribed to the service, the name and telephone number (if available) of your callers briefly appears on your screen when you are watching TV. Your incoming call history is stored in your WCTA Video Library until you delete it. You can enable or disable the service yourself (if Primary User), and can adjust the length of time the Caller ID frame stays on. It is possible for the Caller ID Screen Pop to appear on your TV before your phone rings. Make sure to wait for the phone to ring; otherwise, the call might not connect. To view your Caller ID history: 1. Press the Menu button on your remote. 2. Use the left/right down navigation arrows to bring the highlight box to the My Library ; then press the OK button on your remote. 3. Arrow down the list until Caller ID is highlighted. The list might continue below what you see on the screen. If so, continue pressing the down arrow button on your remote to see the rest of the list. 4. When Caller ID is highlighted, press the OK button on your remote. Continued 27

29 Your calls are listed to the right with the most recent calls on the top. To delete a Caller ID listing from your Library: 1. Access your Caller ID history as explained above. 2. Use the left/right/up/down arrows to highlight the call. 3. Press the OK button on your remote. A window appears with the options to delete the entry, or cancel. Delete should be highlighted. 4. With Delete highlighted, press the OK button on your remote. The call is removed from the list. If you select the Delete All option you will delete all the records in your caller ID library. 28

30 To disable Caller ID TV screen pop: 1. You must be signed in as the Primary User (if you have also set up subaccounts see the section Working with Users for more information.) 2. Bring up the Menu Bar options by pressing the Menu button on your remote. 3. Use the left/right navigation arrows to bring the highlight to the Settings box; then press the OK button on your remote. After entering your password, you are brought to the Preferences tab. See the next section, Working with Settings for more information on using the Settings option. 4. Use the left/right/up/down navigation arrows to bring the highlight to the box next to Enable Caller ID and uncheck it (press the OK button on your remote). 5. To save the change, bring the highlight to the Submit box on the bottom of the screen, and press OK on your remote. 29

31 To change the length of time the screen pop remains on: 1. Access the Settings option as explained in Steps 1-2 above. 2. On the Preferences tab, bring the highlight to the Caller ID timeout field and press the OK button on your remote. Small blue arrows appear to the left and right of the box. 3. Use the left/right arrows on your remote to select the length of time you prefer. 4. To save the change, bring the highlight to the Submit box on the bottom of the screen, and press OK on your remote. Working with Settings Primary User The Settings option has the following options for the Primary User. Sub-users will not have access to these settings. They see a different screen when they select Settings. See the section Working with Sub-User Settings for more information. 30

32 Tab Preferences Users Hardware Settings Cancel Definition Gives you options to change global settings, such as parental controls, caller ID settings, autotune/reminders, and channel blocking. Allows you to create users, and change settings, including parental controls, for any user. Provides a number of options for adjusting your screen resolution and other hardware configurations. It may take a few moments for the Hardware Settings screen to appear. Returns you to regular TV viewing. To access the Primary User Settings: 1. When signed in as the Primary User, press the Menu button on your remote. Move the highlight to the Settings box and press the OK button on your remote. You are prompted to enter your password. To enter your password: Your password is the number 0, unless you have changed the default. 1. Enter your password using the number keypad on the remote. 2. When your entries are complete, arrow down to the OK box and press the OK button on your remote. 31

33 Working with the Preferences Tab The majority of the global system settings are found on the Preferences tab of the Primary User. To begin working with Preferences: 1. Access the Primary User Settings options as described in the section above. 2. Normally the Preferences option is selected. If not, use the left/right/up/down arrows to bring the highlight to the Preferences option, and press the OK button on your remote. The Preferences screen displays: 32

34 Preferences Field Definitions: Field Share Rentals Require Login Enable Caller ID Channel Blocking Parental Control Caller ID Timeout Theme Autotune Alert Definition Enables all users to view PPV movie rentals stored in the Library. (PPV not available this release.) When checked, the Sign Out option is provided to all users when they press the Menu button, so that users can sign in with their own individualized signons. See the section Understanding Users for more information. When checked, Caller ID screen pop will appear on your TV. You must subscribe to this service for the option to appear in your Preferences. See the section Working with Caller ID Screen Pop for more information. When checked, channel blocking is enabled. Highlight the Edit box and press the OK button on your remote to block or unblock channels. See the section, Working with Channel Blocking for more information. Blocked channels do not appear in the Guide, and are unavailable to all users, including the Primary User. When checked, Parental Controls are enabled, and the Primary User has the option to Lock and Unlock parental controls via the Menu bar. Allows you to set the length of time your caller ID will appear on your screen, if you have WCTA s Caller ID screen pop service. Depending on your set-top box, you might have options to select between these color schemes: English NuBlu 5.6 This is the theme that is shown in this guide. English NuBlu 5.4 This is very similar to NuBlu 5.6 but has slight display differences. You will need to reboot your set-top box after changing your theme. Allows you to select how much time you have between your autotune and the start of your scheduled program. (1/2 minute, 2 minutes, or 5 minutes.) To ensure you don t miss the very beginning of a program, select 2 or 5 minutes. 33

35 Working with the Users Tab You must be signed in as the Primary User to work with the Users options. 1. Access the Settings options as described earlier. 2. Use the left/right/up/down navigation buttons to highlight the Users tab; then press the OK button on your remote. The Users screen appears as shown below. The top of the screen lists all users you ve created, and shows the parental controls for each. The Primary User is always shown at the top of the list. The Bottom of the Screen: User Tab Screen Options Option Parental Controls Definition Allows you to work with Parental Controls for the selected user. See the section, Working with Parental Controls later in this guide for more information. Add Edit Delete Cancel Allows you to add a user. Allows you to work with PINs, passwords and Pay-Per-View spending allowances for the selected user. Allows you to delete a user. Cancels out of the Settings option and returns you to the Options screen. You can press the Exit button on your remote to bypass the Options screen and return to TV viewing. 34

36 To work with an existing user: 1. Select the user by bringing the highlight to the dot to the left of the user; then press the OK button on your remote. 2. Select the option you would like to perform on that user (Edit, Parental Controls, or Delete) by bringing the highlight down to the box on the bottom of the screen and pressing the OK button on your remote. To add a user: 1. After selecting the User tab as described above, bring the highlight down to the Add box on the bottom of the screen and press the OK button on your remote. You re presented with the following options: 2. Fill in the required fields as explained below. Use the left/right/up/down arrows on your remote to move from field to field. Some of the options, such as Enable Caller ID and Theme are only presented when you add a new user they are not presented when you edit an existing user. 35

The text entry screen appears. Use the up/down/left/right to highlight each letter of the new login name and press OK after each letter. Arrow down to the Done field and press OK when complete. Use the number pad on your remote to enter a password to be used for this user when signing on. (1 24 numbers long). Re-enter the password to confirm. Use the number pad on your remote to enter a PIN to be used by this user. (1 24 numbers long). Sub-users use PINs to order pay-per-views. Even though this feature is not available this release, you still must enter a PIN for the user. Re-enter the PIN to confirm. Depending on your set-top box, you might have options to select between these color schemes: English NuBlu 5.6 This is the theme that is shown in this guide. English NuBlu 5.4 This is very similar to NuBlu 5.6 but has slight display differences. You will need to reboot your set-top box after changing your theme. Not applicable this release. When checked, Caller ID screen pop will appear on your TV. You must subscribe to this service for the option to appear in your Preferences. When all entries are complete, bring the highlight down to the Continue box and press the OK button on your remote. You re presented with the Parental Control options for the user, which are discussed in greater detail in the Section, Working with Parental Controls. 36

38 To work with an existing user s options: 1. From the Users tab, select the user by bringing the dot to the Select field to the left of that user, and pressing the OK button on your remote. 2. Bring the highlight down to the desired option and press the OK button on your remote. You ll notice that the Primary User and Sub-Users have different edit options. Compare the screens below. Primary User Options No option to change the Login name (must be set by WCTA) Can Enable PIN verification for system changes (unlike sub-users, where PIN is for ordering Pay-Per-Views). 37

39 Sub-User Options Can change the Login name PIN used for sub-users is only for PPV (not applicable this release) 38

40 To sign in as another user: Enable Login must be selected on the Settings Preferences tab for users to be able to sign in and out. 1. First, sign out as the current User by pressing the Menu button on your remote. 2. Use the left/right/up/down arrows to move to the Sign out box and press OK. You re presented with the Sign In screen, as shown below. 3. If not already highlighted, use the arrow buttons on your remote to move the highlight to the Name box, and press the OK button. Blue arrows will appear above and below the box. 4. Use the up/down arrow buttons on your remote to select the desired user name from the list and press the OK button on your remote. 5. Move the highlight down to the password box and enter the password. (*s will appear instead of the actual password.) Press the OK button on your remote. 6. The system will verify the account information. After a few seconds, you are signed on as the new user. 39

41 Parental Controls Understanding Parental Controls Parental controls allow you to control which viewing options are available to each user. Some parental control settings are global (that is, they apply to all users, including the main user) and some are created on an individual basis for each user. Your Parental Control Options You can control the following: Channels You can block channels. A blocked channel is treated as if it s not even part of your package it will not appear on any guide list, including the Primary User s All list, and if you manually type in the channel number on your remote, you ll be brought to the next closest channel, instead. Ratings You can set limits on the Movie Ratings (G, PG, R, etc.), the TV Ratings (TVY, TV7, TVG, etc.) and the Content Ratings (S, V, L, D, etc.) for each individual user. Ratings controls apply to individual programs, not channels. Parental Controls The Basic Process There are a number of components to Parental Controls, and not all are found on the Parental Controls options. If Parental Controls are important to you, make sure you ve checked them all. This list is simply an overview refer to the specific instructions for each. 1. Set-Up Your User(s) Use the options on the Settings Users tab to: Change the PIN and Password for the Primary User to ones your children won t be able to guess Set up your sub-users (If desired), including their passwords, PINs, and pay-per-view allowance See the section, Working with Users for more information. 40

42 2. Check the Primary User Global Parental Controls In addition to the general Movie, TV, and Content ratings that will be applied when the Primary User is signed on, five important global Parental Control Settings are found on the Primary User settings, which are applied to all users: Primary User, Preferences Global Parental Controls A. Enable Parental Controls This must be checked for your parental controls on all users to take effect! B. Channel blocking C. Require login (if additional user profiles are created) Primary User, User/Parental Controls Global Parental Controls D. Set the Unlock timeout E. Block unrated programs See the section below, Working with Primary User Parental Controls for a detailed explanation. 3. Create Sub-User Parental Controls If you decide to create sub-users, you can select which ratings will be allowed for each sub-user and create their PINs and passwords. 4. Block Channels If there are channels you would prefer not even appear as options to any users, you can use the option on the Settings Preferences tab to block those channels. The only way to view the channels at a later date would be to sign in as the Primary User and unblock them. 5. Lock/Unlock the Parental Controls You must be signed in as the Primary User to lock or unlock parental controls using the padlock on the Menu bar options. When parental controls are unlocked, none of the parental controls take effect for any users; however, blocked channels will remain blocked until you manually unblock them on the Settings Preferences tab. 6. Choose an automatic re-lock time You can have the system automatically re-lock your parental controls after a specified length of time ( unlock timeout ), in case you forget to relock them. 41

43 Working with a User s Parental Controls All of the Parental Control features are accessed through the Settings option, and are available only to the Primary User. You ll select from the global parental control settings found on the Primary User screens; then create individual ratings settings for each sub-user you ve created, if any. Additional Parental Control options are configured through the Settings Preferences tab as explained in that section. To access the Primary User Parental Controls 1. While signed in as the Primary User, select the Settings option from the Menu Bar. (See the sections Using the Menu Bar options and Working with Settings if you d like more information on these options.) 2. Bring the highlight to the Users box and press the OK button on your remote. 3. You are presented with a list of all users. Highlight the dot next to the Primary User (always at the top of the list) and press the OK button on your remote. 4. Use your left/right/up/down arrows to highlight the Parental Control box and press the OK button on your remote. 42

44 Understanding Primary User vs. Sub-User Parental Control Options: Note that the Primary User Settings contain some options that apply to just the Primary User, and some settings that apply to all users. Primary User Parental Controls Ratings settings apply only to the selected user (in this case, the Primary User) These two options are global settings (will apply to all users), and are only available to the Primary User Compare the screen above with the Parental Control options for sub-users: Sub-User Parental Controls 43

Highlight the box and press OK to see the following list of options. Use the left/right arrows to move the through the options. When the desired rating is highlighted, press OK again to select it as that user s ratings limit. TVY All Children TVY7 Directed to Older Children TVG General Audiences TVPG Parental Guidance Suggested TV14 Parents Strongly Cautioned TVMA Mature Audience Only Ratings limits must be selected for each individual user you create. The Unlock Timeout automatically relocks parental controls after the specified amount of time in case you forget to relock them. Highlight the box and press OK to see the time options. Use the up/down arrows to move the highlight through the list. When the desired time is highlighted, press OK again to select it. The Unlock Timeout only Re-locks parental controls, it does not signout the Primary user. If the Primary User presses any button on the remote while parental controls are unlocked, the unlock time clock resets. If you check a box, programs with that content will be blocked. S Sexual Situations V - Violence 44

46 L - Language D Suggestive Dialog FV Fantasy Violence You do not have to select content ratings in addition to movie and TV ratings. Block unrated programs (Global setting - available on Primary User options only) If checked, all unrated programs will be blocked to all users. (Note that many standard programs are unrated; however, some adult programs are also unrated.) Channel Blocking A final method of Parental Controls is Channel Blocking. When a channel is blocked, it is treated as if it s not even part of your service. It will not appear on any guide list, including the Primary User s All list, and if the channel number is manually entered, you are simply brought to the next closest channel number. You must be signed in as the Primary User to access the channel blocking option. To access the channel blocking option: 1. When signed in as the Primary User, press the Menu button on your remote. 2. Move the highlight to the Settings box and press the OK button on your remote. You are prompted to enter your password. 3. Enter your password as explained earlier in this document. 4. Normally the Preferences box is selected. If not, use the left/right/up/down arrows to bring the highlight to Preferences, and press the OK button on your remote. 45

47 5. Move the highlight to box next to Channel Blocking and press the OK button on your remote to check it. 6. Press the right arrow to highlight the Channel Blocking Edit box and press the OK button on your remote. You re presented with the Channel Blocking screen. To work with the channel blocking options: 1. Use the up/down arrows on your remote to bring the highlight the channel you want to block. 2. Press the OK button on your remote to select the channels you would like to block. A padlock appears next to the channel as shown in the example above. 3. When you ve completed your selections, move the highlight to the Update box and press the OK button on your remote. 46

48 Parental Controls Examples Example 1: All family members share the same user settings In this example, there will be only one user shared by the whole family, and login will be disabled, for ease of use. This would work well in a household with adults and young children. 1. Settings/Preferences The family chooses the following general preferences settings: Require Login (unchecked) Channel Blocking (checked, and the family has chosen to block the more adult channels, as well as some shopping channels and other channels they have no interest in viewing.) Parental Controls checked to enable parental controls 2. Settings/User User Options (Edit) Password/PIN: The parents choose a password and PIN that the children won t be able to guess. 3. Settings/User Parental Controls Unlock timeout set to 120 minutes about enough time to watch a movie without having parental controls relock. Block unrated programs is not checked (they ve decided that too many of their favorite programs are unrated.) Ratings Settings (Primary User) Since all household members will be sharing the same (Primary) user settings, the family chooses the lowest (youngest) rating limits: Movie Ratings: G TV Ratings: TVY Content Ratings: All are checked to block This way the family is assured the children will only see programs of suitable content for their young age. If the parents want to watch programs at higher (older) levels, they simply unlock the parental controls. 47

49 4. Create favorites lists. To further ensure the young child only watches appropriate programming, a unique favorites list is created for the child to surf through while watching TV. Example 2: Unique settings for adults, teens, and young children In this example, teenagers in the household will be allowed to view higher ratings than the young children, but will not be given full access to all adult content. 1. Settings/Preferences The family chooses the following general preferences settings: Enable Login (checked) Channel Blocking (checked, and the more adult channels are blocked, as well as some shopping channels and other channels they have no interest in viewing.) 2. Settings/User User Options Primary User Password/PIN: The parents choose a password and PIN that none of the children will be able to guess. Enable PIN Verification (checked). Teen and Young Users Two additional Users were added: one called Teen and one called Child. Simple logins and passwords that the kids could remember were assigned to each. 3. Settings/User Parental Controls Ratings Settings (Primary User) Since only the adults will be using the Primary user settings, they are set to higher (older) limits: Movie Ratings: AO TV Ratings: MA Content Ratings: All are unchecked to allow Ratings Settings (Teen User) The teens are allowed to view up to R and NC17 ratings, but the parents don t want to allow sexual or violent content: 48

50 Movie Ratings: R TV Ratings: TV14 Content Ratings: S, V, and FV are checked (blocked) Ratings Settings (Young User) The young children are only allowed to view the lowest (youngest) ratings: Movie Ratings: G TV Ratings: TVY Content Ratings: All are checked to block General (Global) Parental Control Settings The family chooses the following global options: Enable Parental Controls: unchecked since children will only be able to view the ratings allowed to their specific user settings, the adults have chosen to leave parental controls disabled, so that when signed on as the Primary user, they can watch all content. The parents and teens will need to be diligent about signing out when they are done! Block unrated programs is not checked (they ve decided that too many of their favorite programs are unrated.) Parental Controls - Summary As can be seen, there are a number of ways to approach parental controls. You may need to experiment with the assorted settings to find the combination that works best for your household. 49

51 Working with Hardware Settings The Hardware Settings menu provides options to customize settings to match your TV and audio hardware, language and viewing preferences. To access the Hardware Settings Menu: 1. Access the Settings menu as explained in the section, To Access the Primary User Settings. 2. Arrow down to highlight Hardware Settings and press the OK button on your remote. You are presented with the Hardware Settings Menu: To work with options in the Hardware Settings menu: Follow the prompts at the bottom of each screen to navigate the menu options. You can press either the corresponding number, or the corresponding colored button on your remote to select a navigation option. For example, on the screen shown above, you could press either the number 2 or the red button on your remote to go back to the previous menu. 50
