6 Page 1 Thank you for purchasing the DIREC program. It will prove to be a great time saver, especially during fast drilling where there is not a lot of time to spend making trips to consult a computer. It gives you a portable calculation and projection tool. Results match your computer. The DIREC program gives also quick answers for questions ranging from BHA and Pump output to 2D well planning. It works in Metric or Feet mode. The program is on a memory card that is Write Locked and you should keep it that way. It cannot be erased. Magnetism or airport x-ray machines will not affect this card. Total battery failure can affect only data. * The DIREC program is already installed on the HP 50g calculator * An SD memory card is installed into the bottom slot and contains the program. This card does not need to remain in place to work and is for re-installation ONLY. DO NOT remove the card with the calculator turned on. DO NOT move the Write Lock guard on the card from its LOCKED position, as the program will then stay secure. DO NOT use this SD card for any other use (eg. storage of picture or data files) The program card is copy protected and matched with the calculator purchased with it. It will NOT work in any other calculator other than the one it was originally installed on. If for some reason the calculator fails, it will be required to return the card to the Vendor for reprogramming on to a new calculator. Tampering with copy protection will damage data. * * * * * * N O T E * * * * * * The DIREC program is in two parts. DIREC is for Drilling. Well Planning and some of the Utility functions are in a separate Library called PLAN * If for some reason all power is lost to the calculator, the program and data should not be lost. If it does, instructions on how to Re-install the DIREC or PLAN program are explained at the end of this manual. These defaults will be set up already in the HP 50g however, if you have had batteries out for a while, you may need to check the MODE that the calculator is in. Use the Mode key as shown in Diagram #1. The program should set these automatically but you may need to check it or set it manually. This is the way it should look. Be sure it is set in RPN Mode, FIX 2 and Degrees. Also, there should not be a check mark next to Last Stack. The rest of the screen should look as shown change by using Choose and OK buttons. Press OK to exit.

7 Page 2 Using the DIREC Program The DIREC program is written with the idea that it runs off the MENU LABELS visible on the screen. There is a MENU KEY under each label that will execute that label. Use diagram 2 to see a simple version of the menu keys that run the program. They do all functions. Note - the ENTER key is not used anywhere in the DIREC program. Note - The NXT key will rotate in 6 more MENU KEYS if they exist. Pressing NXT again will loop the first 6 back again. The MENU KEYS are used in two ways. 1. CHANGING MENUS- for different menu, use MENU KEY directly. 2. ENTERING DATA- When required, enter the number, (screen blanks) and THEN press the MENU KEY. The screen will completely update. The MENU LABELS keep their respective position in all screens. For example, the SURVY key will always be found on the right side. Anything to do with exiting a program or returning to the MAIN menu will be found on the left-hand side. This manual has two diagram sheets at the beginning. Refer to these now. One is a diagram of the face of the HP 50g. It gives simplified instructions for the ONLY keys required to run this program. The second sheet is a simplified flow chart of the DIREC program, and the third is sample survey report. One is from a Build & Hold well for practice inputting surveys. The example screens throughout this manual will follow these surveys. The second is a Horizontal well report for practice Landing. Enter the data as you go through this manual and make the display match the examples. Your screen results should match EXACTLY. Start the program by using the upper case Right Shift (RED) key followed by LIB Library (located over #2 button). This displays the DIREC program and PLAN program as MENU LABELS. Disregard the port storage location numbers (:0:, :1:, and :2:). Press the MENU KEY located directly below the DIREC MENU LABEL. (The PLAN program is discussed later in the manual). Press the MENU KEY located directly below the START MENU LABEL to start the DIREC program

8 Description of menus: (Look at Flow Chart Diagram #2) Page 3 MAIN MENU - displayed whenever you press MAIN. Use the NXT key to see the second Screen. The MAIN menu takes you to the major areas of the program. SHEET Slide Sheet for entry of slide lengths. The DIREC program will calculate Slide Seen and Slide to Bit amounts as well as Slide that will be seen on the next joint drilled. TOOLS variety of solvers that can be difficult to access on the HP 50g such as Rectangular to Polar and DEG,MIN,SECOND conversion. TALLY Pipe Tally Depth & number of Stands calculator. PUMP Calculates Mud Pump output (can be adjusted for Efficiency). INFO Mainly for starting a new well. Here is where you enter information such as Sensor to Bit, Proposal, KB to Sea Level and Target Info. This is separate from survey information and is not affected by a simple survey Tie-on. SURVEY- pressing this button will always display the last survey and give access to the Survey and Projection menus. All survey projections are discarded when this is pressed. SETUP - Data files are automatically created when the program starts. In case of extreme problems or program lockup, this key can be used to re-zero ALL data files. (Last Resort). MET (METRIC) / FEET Toggle Sets Metric or Feet mode. The DIREC program indicates at most data points as to whether Dog-Leg is Metric (/30) or Feet (/100). Getting Familiar with the Program Let s start with the PUMP output calculator. Since we are going to a new menu, press this key directly and the first choice is to choose the pump type DUPLEX or TRIPLEX. Enter Liner Size, Stroke Length, Rate/ Min and Efficiency by putting in the number and THEN pressing the related key. Pump output is displayed. (Rod diameter required for DUPLEX pumps). * Make the screens on your HP 50g match these screens EXACTLY. Note - If you have any trouble see the note on next page. * * * ENTER NUMBER FIRST - THEN PRESS THE MENU KEY * * *

9 Page 4 * Error Messages - (Too Few Arguments) * If you get an error message, it s more than likely because the program wanted data BEFORE the MENU KEY was pressed. Press the ON key or Red Shift key to clear the screen and then ENTER the number and THEN pressing the MENU KEY. * NOTE - If you experience a severe lock-up of the calculator, perform a warm reboot by holding down the ON key and the C key together. Release C key and THEN let go of the ON key. The calculator will re-boot WITHOUT data loss. Entering a number THEN pressing the MENU KEY is faster than using the extra keystroke required to press a key, enter a number, and then press another key to calculate. Screens ALWAYS refresh with re-calculated numbers. (Numbers on a screen are always correctly calculated in relation to each other). These same numbers will still be here when you next come back to PUMP or any other part of the program. Play with this for a while to get used to entering data and then press MAIN to go back to the MAIN MENU. Then press INFO (as for a New Well) and we will enter demo Survey and Target Information. Note - Survey Tie-on information is entered separately later. * If you press the MAIN Menu Key (the left MENU KEY), you will always return to the Main Menu Other Keys on MAIN MENU INFO This is where you enter info at the START of a well. Sensor to bit is used for projections and BHA output. Use these examples for the sample B&H survey (which we will be following first). SENS (SENSOR) - Survey Sensor to Bit (or Bottom) distance (this is the initial distance for projections and also SLIDE to BIT calculation). Use m. PROP (Proposal) - Input VS (Proposal) Azimuth. Use Azimuth degrees. K.B. (OPTIONAL) Kelly Bushing Elevation Above Sea Level. Input can be either a positive or negative number but the output will ALWAYS show depths below Sea Level as a positive number and depths above Sea Level as a negative number. A zero disables the output. Enter the number here.

10 Page 5 TRGT - enter target co-ordinates only if you want BURR calculations or projections to target. The program allows an End of Build Target #1 (with no azimuth) and a Final Target #2. For EOB enter only TVD and Inclination (No Azimuth). The EOB target is calculated as a BURR to reach the INC at that TVD ONLY. It does not account for direction or position. Use the displayed values for this example. *NOTE - For a horizontal well, enter LANDING POINT as EOB TVD and the FINAL TARGET CO-ORDS. FINAL (FINAL TARGET). Enter the Target TVD, Rectangular Co-ordinates, Radius, Inclination and AZ. Use +/- to enter South or West numbers. Note - The program handles ONLY ONE Final Target at a time. If you have multiple targets, enter the second target after passing the first. Now, let s go to Survey Calculation by pressing NXT and then SURVY. SURVEY CALCULATION The survey screen is similar for surveys and projections. Survey number follows MD symbol at top left. Note projection screen is identical except for a P followed by the projection number instead of MD. Course Length from either the last survey or projected MD in brackets. Sub-Sea TVD is in brackets TVD. (Below Sea Level is ALWAYS shown as positive and above Sea level ALWAYS shown as negative). The number in brackets after the Dog =Leg is the CALCULATED DRILL OFF TOOL FACE that occurred between this and the preceding (survey or projection) point. The menu keys displayed are: (they are in explained in depth later) MAIN always returns you to the Main Menu. SLIDE Gives to BUR and BURR calculations. The first screen is an option to either use the calculated TOTALS from slides entered under SHEET or use SKIP to use hand input numbers that you choose to use. LAST Displays with optional Tie-On (RESTART) any of last 9 surveys calculated. ADD This where you ADD a permanent new survey point. PROJ Projection mode and Target analysis features. SURVY Re-displays your last calculated survey (this screen). *NOTE - All projections are thrown away when you press this and your last survey is shown.

11 Page 6 Pressing NXT rotates in more MENU KEYS. TIE enters a survey tie-on line. OUIJA, VALUE and RATE set the program into one of three optional different projection modes. PREV Projection Preview mode toggle. SLOT - will offset the VS origin as required on an offshore platform. Press TIE to enter a new tie-on line for a survey. Note - entering a new tie-on line under SURVY does NOT affect any Well/Target data entered under INFO. TIE - Tie-on data survey information is entered here. The first screen is a safety screen. You have one chance to go back to SURVY or press NEW to re-set the data files to zero. Wait until hourglass figure (above arrow) disappears. Enter none, some or all of the Tie-on info and press the NXT key and then GO. This displays the survey screen. The example B&H well uses a zero start. Press ADD to enter the next Build & Hold survey point. ADD Add a new ACTUAL Survey. The last stored survey is shown at the top so it can be checked before while entering the new survey. Enter depth number and press MD if it is survey depth or BIT if bit depth. When all numbers are in, Press CALC and it now becomes the LAST survey. When you press SURVY it will display. Enter survey points at 250 M and 300 M from B&H example well at the start of the manual. *- If you enter a Measured Depth that is LESS than the previous depth, it is treated as a Course length. If GREATER, it is treated as a new Measured Depth. After 300m, enter Course Length of 10m as MD. Enter surveys from the B&H Well down 400m. Now let s use the SLIDE Menu Key to check motor (BHA) output. SLIDE goes to a screen where you have the option of using the Slide Seen and Slide to bit values from the electronic slide sheet or Skip to hand entered values. For now we will use the SKIP option. The screen will show initially show Slide Seen and Slide to Bit as Zero. Put in the values displayed here. B: and T: are the BUR and TURN Rates per 1 Depth Unit for the slide seen over the last Survey Course Length. *NOTE - This screen is NOT linked to any projections.

12 Page 7 BURR1 - gives BURR to the TVD and INC you entered as Target #1 under INFO. (Note - the INC and TVD are shown on line 4). If you enter in the length of your next single (9.5 as CL in this example), it calculates the amount of slide of that course length required. You can alter the Build Rate to get new BURR. * Note that BLD Rates on 2D well are INCORRECT for 3D wells. Press BURR2. BURR2 - gives same output to target #2. Note the INC and TVD on line 4 is same as entered under Target #2 in INFO. Both BURR1 and BURR2 have an option called CALC which will take you to solver that allows you the ability to calculate what TVD you will end up at for a given Build rate. Press MENU LABEL NEXT for more calculations. NEXT uses Slide to Bit distance to give calculated DL to bit. If you input a desired DL, it will calculate next slide distance. Let s go back to the Main Menu by pressing SURVEY and then press MAIN. Press SHEET to see the Slide Sheet LIST. SHEET- (OPTIONAL) - Electronic Slide Sheet. Numbers entered here are used for SLIDE SEEN and SLIDE to BIT totals that will calculate when (from the SURVY screen) you press SLIDE - TOTAL. The LIST screen is shown here. For HSTF entry use +/- key for R or L. For MTF entry press ENTER two times before pressing TOOLF, and TF will be as an AZ T/F (no R or L ). The TF numbers are optional and for keeping a RECORD ONLY and NOT USED FOR ANY CALCULATION ANYWHERE! SHEET also includes an editor to Edit previous slides, Modify, Insert or Delete slides. Use INSRT to insert a blank line at the bottom and enter FROM, TO and TF to make your HP 50g match this. Pressing NXT gives options to ZERO the list or pressing TOTAL will take you to the Totals screen displayed when you use the USE option when you press SLIDE after a survey. Press NXT and LIST to go back to LIST screen. The ZERO key will set all the entries to 0. Press EDIT to take you to the LIST editor. The most recent entry is called LAST1. Use the BACK and FRWD keys on the left to scroll back through the last 8 entries. They are called PREV1 and so on. If you press the NXT key you come to the second editor screen where you can Delete the entry displayed or Insert a slide ahead of the one displayed. Press NXT to go to previous menu and LIST to show slide list. Press NXT and TOTAL to show slide totals.

13 Page 8 TOTAL- Shows the totaled values from SHEET. You can enter length of your next joint (as CL shown here) and it will tell you how much you will see on your next survey. Use SKIP to ignore these values and use hand-entered values. SKIP or USE both take you to the Slide screen. When finished press SURVY to display your last calculated survey. Let s now use the LAST feature to display any of the last 9 Survey points. LAST Any of the last 9 Survey Points can be recalled. Press RESTR (RESTART) and Survey displayed will be used as a Tie-on line and all Surveys forward from that depth are discarded. *Note- there are only the previous 4 points displayed on the initial screen. Press NXT to see another 5 surveys. Press NXT again to bring the first 5 into the display. Lets go to the projection features. You access this by pressing SURVY and then PROJ. You have choice of going directly to the calculated Projection (faster) or you can see both the survey and projection together (Preview). Use of Preview Mode with projection Set to OFF on initial install When the preview mode is ON an additional screen is included. This screen lets you see the old survey (or projection) while making the new one. The indicator P # is in place for the projection. When preview mode is OFF the only screen you see is the projection display. PROJ MENU (Projection Menu) In order to check the well position against the target, the program will force you to make at least one projection. You can make this zero projection depth if you want. PROJ Note the similarity of this screen and the survey screen. Difference is the P1 (for projection 1) in place of MD. This projection to a new MD initially uses the Sensor to Bit distance from INFO. The second and all later projections will default to a distance of 10 depth units if in METRIC mode or 30 depth units in FEET mode. This is only a default projection distance and can be modified later. Depth can be changed in any projection mode *Note- if entered Measured Depth that is LESS than the previous depth, it is treated as a Course length. If GREATER it will be treated as a new Measured Depth.

14 Page 9 There are 3 options for making a projection. It will stay in the mode last used until you change it. The initial default mode for the program is OUIJA. The mode can be changed at any time (even during) projections. Access the modes by the SURVY and NXT keys. The modes are: - Ouija mode - Value mode - Rate mode OUIJA Mode forms the projection segment by input of the desired Dogleg and High Side Tool face. It is NOT or NEVER IS a Magnetic Tool Face. VALUE Mode allows you to directly input Inclination and Azimuth. Value Mode will make the initial projection for the keeping the Inclination and Azimuth the same. rate. RATES Mode allows you to form the projection segment input of Build Rate and Turn By using AGAIN - any number of projections can chained together. The projection can then be checked against either the End of Build or Final Target. Projection Modes (this example is with OUJIA Board start) The first projection is made using the default depth from INFO (12 in this case). This projection can be altered for MD, DL or TF. When a new number is entered the entire screen updates. Pressing the NXT (Next) key at any time gives access to the other two projection options of VALUE mode or RATE mode. Press VALUE mode and the screen returns but now your options for change are by hand input of INC. and AZIMUTH. Value projections are on a straight line from the last survey point. Press NXT and RATE. The screen returns with your options now as BUILD and TURN rate. Since we came from VALUE mode the projection is still based on that. This projection normally based on the build and turn rate between the last two surveys. * NOTE You can change modes at any time while projecting.

15 Page 10 AGAIN - Add another projection on to the first projection. You can chain together as many individual projections as you wish. TRGT Will take you to the TARGET Menu (described below). SURVEY Returns to the last actual survey station and the SURVEY MENU. Press SURVEY and then PROJ to go to the TARGET MENU. TRGT (TARGET) MENU access from Projection menu BACK Takes you back to the last projection so you can modify it and return to the TRGT menus. E.O.B. Indicates what BUR Rate is required to achieve the required Inclination at the End of Build point from your last Depth and Inclination. This assumes a straight line between the last survey point and Target Center. FINAL Makes a Straight Line Projection giving the Inclination and Azimuth to the center of the Final Target. It also gives the Inclination to the front and back and the Azimuth to the Left and Right hand side of the target. LAND Skip this for now. We will use it with the example horizontal well. CENT (CENTER) This option will project to Target #2 entered under INFO. While I wish this would be able to solve exactly to the target center, it will only be able to find a point NEAR the target center, however it does show how much you miss it by. As you become more lined up with the target it will solve closer to the center. The reason I left it in here was that it does tell you how much it will miss by and you can then adjust the INC and AZ to get closer. (Adjusting any of the value has an effect on where you will enter the target). *Press TRGT and NXT and you also access a TVD Required Calculator, Slide Distance & TF Calculator and Rectangular to Polar Converter to give Closure Distance & AZ and tell how far projection is OFF the Line. TVD (TVD Required Calculator) A 2D TVD Req. Calculator. It starts from last survey point or projection. You can alter the INITIAL INC, FINAL INC or BUR and find the TVD REQUIRED to reach a desired Inc. at that BUR

16 Page 11 Press SURVY, MAIN, INFO, TRGTS and FINAL to enter in the Target Inc. from the horizontal survey (90) as the Final Target Inclination. Press NXT, SURVY, NXT, TIE and NEW and enter in the HZ survey (tied-on at 800M) from the lower half of the sample page. ADD Surveys down to depth 1080m. Press PROJ to make a projection to the bit. Press TRGT and now we see how LAND works LAND Mainly meant for landing a Horizontal Well. It will take the end point of the last projection, use the Final Target INC and Target AZ and use this as another projection. It will solve for Final Target TVD. MD and Course Length (in Brackets) are the distance required to this point. The numbers at the top on the left are the distance that you will be from the target point at that TVD. The numbers on the right are the POLAR co-ordinates of the same point. This example shows you landing long by roughly 14m and 1.8m to the south. You can adjust the INC, AZ and even the TVD to see the effect it will have on your landing point in relation to the target. Numbers in the lower right corner are Build and Turn Rate. Press NXT and you can you can adjust the projection by Build and Turn Rates. You can use BACK to go back to the projection and keep re-adjusting it to get the right curve to the target. For instance use BACK and change the dogleg to Press TRGT and LAND. We see that now we are landing only 10.8m short but let s adjust the TVD to You can see that we have come substantially closer to Landing Point Target. This just means that we will land a little high if we continue to 90 deg INC so we should just go to 89 or so. You can also adjust the INC and AZ this way. Use BACK and experiment Survey Projection to get the best fit. The distances from the landing point are from TRUE NORTH. This example with a Proposal direction of was chosen to show the relationship between the Target Point and True North.

17 Let s go back to the MAIN menu and choose TOOLS. Page 12 TOOLS - This is collection of functions that you may need from time to time and are not so easily accessed in the HP 50g. They have been all made as menu items. R.P Rectangular to Polar co-ordinate converter. Rectangular coordinates at the top are calculated into the Polar co-ordinates at the bottom. The screen always shows data correct in relation to itself. The default values are the N/S and E/W from the last survey and therefore the DISP and AZ is the Closure Distance and Azimuth of the last Survey point. The value in brackets at the bottom is the distance you are Right or Left ONLY Off the line from the Proposal Line. Not Up or Down. DMS - You can enter in a direction in Degree, Minute and Second format and it will display the Azimuth in four decimal places. It also shows this number rounded to 2 Places. Pressing the R.P button in this screen will insert the Azimuth into the Rec. to Polar Solver. DIST? - Enter Motor Dogleg, Present INC, Desired INC and desired Direction change and it will solve for Distance to drill and HSTF required. OUIJA Simple Ouija board. Enter where you are, how much you want to drill and it will tell you the INC and AZ of the new position. The screen shows fresh data at all times. This Ouija board is NOT LINKED to any other part of the DIREC program. TVD A 2 dimensional TVD Required calculator that shows combinations of Initial Inc, Final Inc and B.U.R. and the TVD and MD required to make this curve. CONVT Units conversion utility. Will convert many Units (Length, Weight, Volume, Pressure and Temperature) from Metric to Imperial

18 Press MAIN to get back to Main Menu then Tally Page 13 TALLY Press TALLY then press SETUP. Enter in String components. Then press NXT and you will see a simple Depth display. You can add a joint or go back one BACK1 This is end of the main DIREC Program. Well Planning as well as some of the other Non Drilling Utilities are in another Library called PLAN. This is accessed by Pressing Right Shift LIB (The 2 key), PLAN then START as with the DIREC program. This is the MAIN MENU for the PLAN program. There is Well Planning, a Rectangular to Polar converter as well as Calendar, Exchange Rate and Wind Chill conversions etc. Press Plan for Well Planning. PLAN MENU - (Well Planning) There are three types of wells you can plan on a Two Dimensional basis. The well planning works for basic S-Curve, Build & Hold and Horizontal wells. The Well Planning program has broad options to vary K.O.P., Build Rate and Terminal Angle. BUILD & HOLD The Initial screen will carry you into the next two screens of the planning program. The default planning method uses the entry of a Terminal Angle and it will calculate the Kick Off Point. There is an option here called KOP where you can put in the Kick Off Point and it will calculate the Terminal Angle. You can switch back and forth between modes at any time. Target Input can be expressed either by Displacement and Azimuth from the wellhead (POLAR) or by inputting the RECTANGULAR co-ordinates. Plans can be entered in one format and displayed in the other. Terminal Angle input mode POLAR RECTANGULAR KOP input mode

19 Page 14 Enter the data into the first screen and press CALC to calculate these parameters into a solution and display it on the second screen. If the parameters requested are not possible, a message stating this is displayed for 2 seconds and you return to the first screen. You can then adjust the KOP, BUR and Terminal Angle (T.ANG) directly on this second screen. If the combination is not possible you return to the first screen. HORIZONTAL - Planning works for two well types depending on the way you want to Land the well. NORMAL - option is for a constant BUR rate well that goes from Vertical to Horizontal (0-90 deg). It uses a single screen for the profile of the well plan. Once the desired Displacement, KOP and BUR have been determined, pressing the RECTA Key will give you the opportunity to enter an Azimuth and display the rectangular co-ordinates for the landing point. SOFT LAND - This second and powerful option uses two screens. It will Soft Land an existing NORMAL horizontal well plan. If there is no Build Rate 2 then the screen will show the normal Horizontal Well profile. However, IF there is a Build Rate #2 you will also be prompted for L2 (distance this second build rate will be drilled with as the well goes horizontal). The display will then show a re-computed KOP and BUR1 as well as the INC that exists at the transition point. Press CALC and the second screen will give information about TVD and MD for the key points of the well. Again, the RECTA option will give the rectangular co-ordinates for EOB1 and EOB2 at all these same points for a given Azimuth.

20 Page 15 S-CURVE - Does well planning for S-Curve type wells. Due to the amount of information required, the planning takes place over several screens.
