5 2. Chat Sending text messages between Android devices paired with Handhelds or Gateway is possible. Messages travel using the Smartrek network and does not rely on any other networks such as cellular or internet networks. As the Smartrek network relies on battery operated nodes, its data transmission rate is low compared to standard networks. As a result, Smartrek s messenging is not as responsive as web chat and its speed is dictated by the data acquisition speed of the system (or gateway s duty cycle). This section will cover the basics of the Chat feature. 2.1 Network behavior with Chat Chatting mode is different from the usual sensors polling mode. When the system switches to the chatting mode, all sensors will stop being polled and data acquisition will be resumed once the chat conversation is over (after some time has elapsed since the last message). The size and speed of the network will dictate the responsiveness of the mode toggling (switching from one mode to another will take some time). 2.2 Requirements The Chat feature requires communication within the Smartrek meshed network. For Android tablets/ smartphones to receive chat messages, they need to be paired with a handheld device. The basic requirement is one master device (handheld or gateway) per user (Android tablet/smartphone), and the Sugarheld App v installed on all devices. All devices have to run the same Sugarheld version. 2.3 Enabling Chat The Chat feature is normally disabled unless the user specifies Chat use when running the Installation Wizard. To enable Chat, launch the Sugarheld App, then, 1. Tap on the Cfg. tab 2. Scroll down to Device configuration 3. Check the Enable portable query (chat/db) 4. Check the Portable fast reaction option 5. Repeat all of the above steps for all Android devices (tablets/smartphone) that will be chatting through handhelds/gateways Once enabled, the Chat feature will be active, the Database Sync and the Control over Handheld. 6 other words, if chat is enabled, adding/removing/modifying nodes in the table from a handheld will also add/remove/modify that same nodes on the other devices. Starting pumps from handhelds will also be possible. WARNING: activating this option will increase battery consumption Notes are simply another type of node. Consequently, if created/moved/deleted, they will also be created/moved/deleted on all tablets/smartphones. 2.4 Getting ready 1. Once the Sugarheld App has been properly configured for all users (all handheld/android devices), then it s time to transfer the Database between Android devices so that they share the same table (sensors list). The handhelds and gateways cannot detect each other automatically so you need to make them aware of each others by adding all of them to the sensors table if it has not already been done. Then, on each Android device, activate the handheld that it will be associated with: 1. Tap on the Nodes tab 2. Swipe to the Portable or Gateway page 3. Click and hold the handheld or gateway that needs to be activated 4. Tap on Activate Note: the Gateway/Handheld can only maintain a single Bluetooth connection. If the Android phone cannot connect to the gateway/handheld, then check if any other Android device is currently Page 3

7 activated on that node and deactivate it. 2.5 Creating an account (optional) The next step is to create an account. This step is optional. Create an account if security is an issue for you. The account information will be used to encrypt/decrypt message within your network. If you do wish to securize your chat conversations, then you will need to create the same account on all Android devices. All of them will also need to be logged into that account at all time in order to receive the messages. To create an account: 1. Swipe the Main Menu from the left of the screen 2. Tap on Account 3. From there, you can see if you are currently logged into an account. You can also create a new one by tapping on Login 4. Then, tap on Create a new account. Fill in the form and tap on Register. You will be automatically logged into that account Page 4

8 2.6 Using Chat If you have followed the previous sections, then you should be ready to start chatting Choose Avatar To choose your chat avatar: 1. Swipe the Main Menu from the left of the screen 2. Tap on Account 3. Tap on the Avatar icon 4. Choose an Avatar from the list and tap OK Page 5

9 Users list The chat users list can be found by tapping on the Chat tab (only visible if Chat was previously enabled). It contains all handhelds and gateways that are currently in the table (sensors list). These are the users that are available for chatting. They share the same name as the node that they represent. The users list also holds Groups that are created by the user. Groups are covered in the following sections. There is also an additional group named All. The usage of this group is also explained in the Page 6

10 following sections. To refresh the users list, swipe down Groups Groups can be created for conversation between more than two users. For all devices to receive messages from chatgroups, all chatrooms have to be created manually in all Android devices (tablets/smartphones). For example, if a chatroom has three participants, user1, user 2 and user3, then: - on user1 s Android device, there must be a group with user 2 and user 3 - on user2 s Android device, there must be a group with user 1 and user 3 - on user3 s Android device, there must be a group with user 1 and user 2 Try avoiding to switch Android devices paired handhelds (i.e. pairing with another handheld). Doing this would change group definition (participants) and messages won t be received anymore unless all groups are redefined in all tablets/smartphones. To create a group: 1. In the Sugarheld App, tap on the Chat tab 2. Open the Context Menu 3. Tap on Create Group 4. Enter a group name, group description and select all participants (e.g. following the previous example, user1 would create a group with participants user2 and user3) 5. Click on Done. The new group should be created and visible in the users list Page 7

11 You can verify group participants by selecting the group and check the participants MAC addresses in the chat conversation window Chat To start chatting, choose a user or group in the users list. You will get to the conversation window. The group participants (their MAC address) are listed in the header. Enter a message and tap on send. You can follow the status of the message with the two bars at the bottom of the screen. The bottom bar is showing the sent message (or other information/nodes/command) progress in the network. The top bar is showing incoming messages (or other information/nodes/command). Page 8

12 Messages that were not received by all receipients are marked as not sent Notifications Notifications are received with incoming messages. When in app, you will get both sound notification and vibration. When the app is in background, you will get notifications in the notification bar. To turn on/off notifications: 1. In the Sugarheld App, tap on the Chat tab 2. Open the Context Menu 3. Tap on Notification On/Off History Chat history is kept on each device. To view chat history, tap on View more messages in the Chat room to display old messages. You can also clear history from memory: 1. In the Sugarheld App, tap on the Chat tab 2. Open the Context Menu 3. Tap on Delete chat history 3. Notes on map and Database sync Notes can be taken on the map and synced to between Android devices that are paired with Handhelds or Gateways. The notes sync through the Smartrek network (internet and cellphone service are not required). Furthermore, nodes adding/removal/modifications will also be synced when the feature is enabled. The requirements to add notes on map are the same as for the Chat feature. Enabling Chat also simultaneously enables databae syncing, which is the mechanism required to share notes on map. Please refer to the previous section for the requirements and to enable Notes on map/db Sync. If not enabled, the notes can still be taken on the map but won t be synchronized between tablets/ smartphones. 3.1 Taking Notes Notes are simply a type of virtual Node. To add Notes to your current location, make sure that your Page 9

13 Android device (tablet/smartphone) currently has a lock on the GPS signal and that your map is locked onto it: 1. In the Sugarheld App, tap on the Nodes tab 2. Swipe pages to Map Note 3. Open the Context Menu 4. Tap on New Node. You will notice that the page to add Notes is similar to the add Nodes page 5. Tap on Type and select Map Note 6. Then add your note under Name 7. Confirm changes Page 10

14 3.2 Change Notes appearance Single Note Notes background color, text color and text size can be customized by selecting the note in the Nodes tab. Uncheck Default values to change Note appearance. These changes will only apply to that single note All Notes Notes background color, text color and text size can also be customized and applied to all notes: 1. In the Sugarheld App, tap on the Map tab 2. Open the Context Menu 3. Tap on Layers 4. Long press the Notes item to prompt the Note properties dialog 5. Change Notes appearance 6. Then confirm changes by tapping on Ok Page 11

15 Control equipments over handhelds Before version 2.0.0, equipments such as pumps could only be controlled remotely from the tablet/ smartphone paired with the main gateway, or through the web interface. Version introduced control over handhelds which can come in handy when the user wishes to control equipement remotely. Control is achieved within the Smartrek network and does not require internet/cellphone service. To enable control of equipments over handhelds, follow the same steps as in 2.3 (Enable Chat). 5. New modern theme You can change the look of the Sugarheld app to a modern theme with a light background (Theme Modern). The original dark theme is still available (Theme Legacy). In the case of Chat/DB sync/control over handheld use, consider switching theme to Modern for the best experience. The Modern theme has two progress bars at the bottom of the window to display the status of the data being transferred between handhelds and gateways. To change theme: Page 12

16 1. In the Sugarheld App, tap on the Cfg. tab 2. Scroll down under Display configuration and tap on Choose theme 3. Select theme 6. Statistics generator With the quantity of data recorded from all the sensors, it may be hard to pinpoint where leaks are when temperature is around freezing point. To help the user get the information, a statistics tool has been implemented. 6.1 Generating a freeze report To generate a freeze report for your vacuum sensors, first make sure that all of your vacuum sensors have a threshold set (by clicking on each sensor, and under each gauge, modify the Error threshold). Everytime that your vacuum sensor reads a vacuum below that Error Threshold, the app will highlight that sensor in red and will send you a low pressure alarm if your alarms are enabled. Then, when generating the freeze report over a day, the total time that your vacuum sensor read a low pressure will be computed and shown on a bar graph. You can then visually analyze all sensors and pinpoint Page 13

17 leaky mainlines with a glimpse. To generate a freeze report: 1. In the Sugarheld App, swipe from the left of the screen to open the options panel 2. Select Statistics 3. Select the type of sensor that you wish to inspect (in the case of a freeze report, select vacuum sensors) 4. Then, select the start date and time and the end date and time 5. Tap on Ok 6. Wait for the app to compute the data. Then, you should be able to see the bar graph 7. Read the legend by tapping on Legend at the top right corner of the screen, or swipe from the left of the screen Printing the report The report can be printed/saved/shared. From the screen with the bar graph that you wish to print, tap on Create Pdf Report. Page 14

18 7. Installation Wizard In order to ease the installation/configuration process of the Smartrek system, an Installation Wizard can now be used. It will guide you through the configuration process of the App and will help you get the most out of your system and have you up and running as fast as possible. 7.1 How to launch the Wizard Starting with a fresh install of the Sugarheld App (not an update), the Installation Wizard will automatically launch when the App starts. You can skip anytime in the Wizard except at the end, when the finish button has been pressed. If you skip the Wizard, it will automatically re-launch the next time the app is opened, as long as there is no gateway or handheld registered yet in the app. Once there are master components registered in the database (gateway or handheld units have been scanned and added in the app), then the Wizard can only be launched manually by going to the Cfg. tab, under Installation Wizard. From there you will have Launch Wizard, which will start the Wizard right away. You also have another option with a checkbox, Launch Wizard at next boot. If enabled, the Wizard will start everytime that the app is launched, until the Wizard is completed (or the option is disabled). Note that you will need to be connected to an internet network for the Wizard to configure your Page 15

19 maps properly as it will download all the relevant satellite maps for you Wizard - step 1 - Name device Name your device (your Android device). By giving a name to your Android device in the app, you will find the process of transferring database (sensors list) from one device to another much easier (your default device name is DEVICE) 7.3 Wizard - step 2 - Enter your address Enter your address (your sugarbush s address). It could be a zip code (or for Canadian customers, the 3 first digits of the postal code). Then tap on Search Address. The address found will be used as the center location of the maps that will be downloaded. It is important to enter the correct location or the maps downloaded won t be relevant (only maps surrounding your area will be saved to your device). 7.4 Wizard - step 3 - Remote use Now you ll be asked whether you wish to use the system locally only or locally and remotely (i.e. use the system outside of the network, to view your system at home, at work or anywhere in the world). If you answer Yes, then the wizard will guide you through some extra steps to configure the remote access 7.5 Wizard - step 4 - Configure Google Account Then, you need to configure a Google Account (either choose an existing one or create a new one). 20 Most of our services use Google functionalities (such as Google Drive) so that s why we re asking for an account. 7.6 Wizard - step 5 - Configure Alarms Next, you can customize the basic alarms settings. You can disable/enable: - Sound alarms on errors and warnings (you will be able to set the error limits on each sensor later on) - Use Text-to-speech ability of your phone so that errors and warnings are read to you 7.7 Wizard - step 6 - Configure Units Next, you can customize the units that will be used throughout the app. You can choose either Metric or Imperial units or tap on Customize Units to choose the right unit for each of your measurements. - Metric units : distance in m, height in cm, temperature in C, positive pressure in bar, negative pressure or vacuum in in Hg, volume in L, flow in gpm (UK gallons) - Imperial units : distance in ft, height in in, temperature in F, positive pressure in psi, negative pressure or vacuum in in Hg, volume in gal (US), flow in gpm (US gallons) 7.8 Wizard - step 7 - Choose Application Next, you will be prompted to select the main use of the Smartrek system. Choose the Maple industry. 7.9 Wizard - step 8 - Reader or Writer Then, you will be asked to choose how the app will gather data from the Smartrek system: 1) by pairing with a Gateway 2) by pairing with a Handheld 3) if you answered yes at step 3 (you are going to use the system remotely), by reading data from the cloud 7.10 Wizard - step 9 - Install gateway Now it s time to install the device that you have chosen in step 8. Tap on scan if applicable to scan the barcode of your gateway or handheld. Then, name your gateway/handheld device. The next two steps will configure the gateway settings (if applicable) depending on the configuration of your bush Wizard - step 10 - Define sugarbush Page 17

21 Enter the distance of the farthest node from the gateway (from your sugarhouse). In other words, what will be the radius of your Smartrek network if the center is the sugarhouse Wizard - step 11 - Configure Performance Choose how you would like to optimize the system: 1) Save batteries (low data-rate). You should choose this option if you are not currently in the sugaring season to save your battery life. When saving batteries, the system will respond slower than with the high performance option. You will still get a lot of data, but not every second. 2) High performance (high data-rate). You can choose this option if you are currently running the system during sugaring season. The system will respond very fast and consume a lot more batteries. You can choose to run on the Save Batteries mode at all time, even during sugaring season. You should still have plenty of data. If you don t care much about the batteries (i.e. you would likely have to change the batteries after 1 or 2 seasons), then you can swap to high performance. Once the wizard is over, you can still change these options manually without having to re-run the Wizard. To do so, go to the Node tab in the Sugarheld App. Tap on your activated gateway. Change the duty cycle from 5% (battery saving mode) to any higher value (e.g. 10%, 15%, 20%...) Wizard - step 12 - Enable features There are a few features that are only available for handhelds users. If you plan on using handheld devices in your system deployment, then check the Handheld use. Then, you will have two more options available: 1) Enable Chat/DB sync/synced Notes on map: select this option if you wish to chat within the Smartrek network with your workers or if you wish to sync your DB (sensors list) in the field using handheld devices. With DB syncing, you can add nodes in the woods using a handheld and they will sync on the man tablet. You can also add notes on the map that will also sync to all tablets/smartphones (connected to a gateway or a handheld). 2) Enable Equipment control through Handhelds: select this option if you wish to control your equipments from tablets/smartphones connected to handhelds Wizard - step 13 - Choose Theme Choose the look of your app. For those who are getting used to the old interface (prior to 2017), select the Legacy theme. For the best experience however, select Modern theme. Page 18

22 7.15 Wizard - last step (14) - Finish You can now commit your preferences and click on Finish, or if you can cancel by pressing Skip (no changes will be made). Wait until your preferences are being applied. The Wizard will also take care of downloading the satellite map for you. Once completed, the app will restart and you should be ready to start adding sensors to your network and enjoy the system! Page 19
