Page 1 Geo2000 SvalSim Documentation This documentation will help you to discover and use the SvalSim geosimulator. It will tell you in general how the simulator works and how to use it. General information This document describes the user interface, navigation and the common resources that are available in SvalSim Fullscreen If the simulator did not show up in fullscreen or you do not want to run in fullscreen you can press the <f>-key to toggle fullscreen on/off. Introduction The image bellow shows a typical view.. Let us go more in to detail on how to use the simulator. Navigation modes The mouse is the main way of navigating. You have four navigation modes: Plane (P) (Default) Helicopter (H) Locked mode (L) Overview mode (O) You can toggle between plane and helicopter by pressing the <spacebar>. You can toggle between all modes by clicking the mode letter on the GPS. (See picture) This letter shows which navigation mode you currently are in.
Page 2 Plane In this mode you will need the left mouse button, <+> and <-> or <up arrow> and <down arrow>. Pressing <+> or <up arrow> will increase your speed. Pressing <-> or <down arrow> will decrease your speed. To fly simply press and hold the left mouse button. To stop release left mouse button. By moving the mouse in different directions you will be able change your flying direction. Depending on you computers hardware you can experience lag and slow system response if you fly at tremendous speeds (e.g km/h or more) this is normal and you should decrease your speed to get back normal system response. In plane mode you can also perform rolls and spins by pressing the <R> key. This key toggles on/off the ability to spin around your own axis. Helicopter To use the helicopter mode use should have a three button mouse. If you only have a two button mouse the third button can be simulated by pressing and holding down Ctrl while using the left mouse button. The helicopter mode is nice when you want to take a closer look at something. This mode is operated with only the mouse. Holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse forward or backwards will make you fly forwards or backwards and by moving the mouse to the left or right you will turn to the left or right. Holding down the middle mouse button and moving the mouse forward or backward will make you move upwards or downwards and by moving the mouse to the left or right you will movr to the left or right. Holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse will make you able to adjust your direction. You can't hold down more than one button at the time. Note: Sometimes you may loose functionality if you by accident hit the Ctrl key, if this happens, try to push the Ctrl key again. Locked mode Lockedmode is almost as helicopter mode but in this mode you can fly with constant altitude. You can change your altitude as you do in the helicopter mode, but then you fly your pitch will not impact on the altitude. This mode is nice if you want to keep a certain hight and pitch. Overview mode In this mode the camera will point straight down. You operate this mode with the left and middle mouse button (you can also use the right button as middle button in this mode). Use the left mouse button to navigate up, down, left and right. The middle button will as in helicopter mode change your altitude. The GPS In Geo2000 we refer to the GPS as the rectangular box you see in the lower left corner. Default the GPS will show your position, altitude (elevation) heading and speed. The GPS can differ slightly from simulator to simulator, but basically it contains three different sections. Navigation Waypoints Resources
Page 3 In the upper right corner of the GPS you will find three symbols. We have already discussed the first one under the Navigating section. But not? the The? sign will toggle the help screen on/off. This screen shows some information about the most used features. toggles the overview map. You will probably use this feature often. The red dot shows the current position. Navigation The navigation section is as mentioned showing your position, altitude (elevation), heading and speed. As a background on the compass you can see a map of Svalbard and a red dot. This dot is your position, and will move then you change positions. To to go the next mode on the GPS press the "Navigation" button once. You should now be in the "Waypoints" section.
Page 4 Waypoints This section contains the most used places. By clicking on one of the names you will jump to that place in the simulator. A waypoint is usually a place where you will find information of interest. You can scroll up an down in the waypoints by clicking up or down arrow on the GPS. The arrows only show up if the list is to long to fit (more than 7 elements). Click the waypoints button to proceed to the Resources section. Resources The Resources section contains available resources. This section might change as you travel around in the simulator. It will show available resources on each location. By selection from this menu you can toggle resources on/off or start features. E.g: Pressing the "Profiles" button will turn on profiles. Pressing "Local..." button will give you a popup menu of all the location specific resources.
Page 5 Info objects The balloons or info objects as we call them is a sign which tells you that you can find interesting information. They usually appear on locations which also have a waypoint. By right clicking on the balloon you will get access to the resources which this location has to offer. You can also reach the same resources by selecting the "Local..." button in the Recourses section of the GPS. Terrain options You get access to these options by clicking the right mouse button when the cursor is over the terrain. Texture You can change textures by selecting from this menu.
Page 6 Measure With Measure you can get the coordinates for a single point and the distance between two points in the terrain. Strike and Dip
Page 7 Jump to UTM Type in your wanted position and the simulator will jump to that location. Fly to here You will fly to the point you are pointing at then you select "Fly to here" from the popup menu. How to operate on media Images Images will show up like rectangles in the terrain.
Page 8 Right click on an image to align the camera in front of the image. Your view should now be like this: You now have the ability to do certain operations on the imageboard.
Page 9 Profiles Profiles shows default up with a dummy image to save memory. Right click on the profile and select the type of view you want. E.g transparent: Profiles can be dragged up and down by clicking and holding down left mouse button while dragging in the mouse up and down. Movies Movies show up in the terrain as a movie clip. Right click on the movie and select play. A new window displaying the movie will appear.
