Otherwise OCAD cannot connect to a database. Microsoft Access Database Engine 32-bit or 64-bit: If you use the OCAD 32-bit, OCAD takes the 32-bit Access Database. The version of the Access Database depends on the Office-Edition. The Access Database Engine of the same Office-Version cannot be installed contemporary for the 32-bit and the 64-bit. Learn Videos (HowTos) for particular topics can be found in the OCAD Learn-Videos directory or online at Copyright OCAD AG Page 2

1 Open OCAD file Open the file St Moritz leer.ocd. The file is located in the directory St Moritz_ocad. After opening the file, you probably need to adjust some paths to your local directories. Save file Save the file as St Moritz.ocd. (File Save as ) Check Map Scale Make sure that the correct map scale is selected. For this example, it is 1:25000 (Map Set Scale and Coordinate System...) Copyright OCAD AG Page 3

Define Coordinate System Click the Choose... button to define a coordinate system. The Coordinate System dialog is displayed. Choose the corresponding coordinate system. (Coordinate System: Swiss Grid) OK The Set Scale and Coordinate System dialog is displayed again. OK Copyright OCAD AG Page 4

2 Import Shape Files Import all shape files from the directory St Moritz_shp. (File Import ) Open The Import Shape File dialog is displayed. Choose the Microsoft Access 2003/2010 mdb database type. OK Copyright OCAD AG Page 5

3 Assign Symbols Assign Symbols by Records The imported objects are shown gray. To show it with the desired symbol, you have to assign every object to a symbol. The color for objects without symbols be changed under Options OCAD Preferences Object Click on an unsymbolized object: On the bottom right, you see the database information to the correspondent object: To show the selected object (e.g. Lake) symbolized, choose the corresponding symbol in the symbol box (e.g. lake). After the object and the symbol is selected, click on the Icon Change Symbol (selected objects). The gray object gets colored and symbolized. This can be accelerated with an automatically assignment. Database Assign Symbols from Database Records Load Copyright OCAD AG Page 6

Select the file Landeskarte.cnt from the St Moritz_cnt directory. Open Choose All datasets. Execute Copyright OCAD AG Page 7

4 Display all Cable Cars in Red The goal of this chapter is to make cable cars stand out with a red color. Because the cable car rails are already red, you only have to adjust the stations. Right click in the symbol box and click on New The New Symbol dialog appears. Choose Area Symbol and click OK. The Area Symbol dialog is shown. Enter a symbol description (e.g. Cable Car Station) and choose the color (24: Rot Bahn oben). Klick on the Icon button to create an icon for this symbol. 2. Choose Template 3. Copy Template 1. Choose Color Copyright OCAD AG Page 8

5 Import Hiking Trails The goal of this chapter is to import a trail with GPS data and display it on the map. First, you have to define a new color for the trail. Open the Colors dialog. (Map Colors ) Click the Add button and open the color picker to choose the new color. ( Choose color from color picker ) OK The Color dialog appears again. You can now name the color (e.g. Yellow for Hiking Trail). Copyright OCAD AG Page 10

The order of the different colors is very important. The colors on top of the list cover the ones below. Symbols drawn with a top color also cover symbols drawn with a color below. Therefore, the new yellow color has to be placed below the colors for text/paths etc. and on top of the colors for contour lines etc. To move a color in the table you have to select it and click on the arrow buttons below. Choose color (e.g. Yellow for Hiking Trail) Create now a new line symbol (Symbol New...). The Line Symbol dialog is displayed. Change opacity to 70 In this way the background behind the trail stays slightly visible. Change the Line color to the defined Yellow color. Enter the Symbol description (Hiking Trail) and the Line width (e.g. 1 mm). Click the Icon... button to create an icon for this symbol. Copyright OCAD AG Page 11

Create a new text symbol. (Symbol New...) The Text Symbol dialog is displayed. Enter a Symbol description (e.g. Label for Trail). Change the color (Red for Labels). Change the size (14.0 pt). Click the Icon... button to create an icon for this symbol. Copyright OCAD AG Page 14

Choose the color below and select a predefined icon. The Text Symbol dialog is displayed again. Close this window now ( OK). OK In order to label the trail, select any drawing tool. Click on the position where you want to place your label and enter the description of the trail and the cable car. Copyright OCAD AG Page 15

7 Import Elevation Model In order to create contour lines for the map, you first have to import the contour lines data. With the DEM Import Wizard, that is new in the OCAD 12 version, (DEM Import ) can be calculated the contours and the Hill shading directly at the import. If you have opened the DEM Import Wizard, you click on Add and open the file ST Moritz_DHM_2m.xyz from the directory St Moritz_xyz: Next Choose on the right side the calculated products Create Contour Lines and Create Hill Shading. Next Copyright OCAD AG Page 16

On the next page you can set the option for the calculation of the contour lines. It should calculate contour lines with the distance of 5m (Line symbol: Höhenkurve: Erdboden ) and the distance of 25m (Line symbol: Zählkurve: Erdboden). The Contour interval index can be set off. Next On the next page you see the option for the creating of the Hill Shading. Choose the option Hill Shading (slope shading combined with oblique light shading) and the Interpolation of 1m with the Interpolation mode Bicubic. The option Preview can only set active, if the Hillshading will be calculated of precious imported elevation data. Next Copyright OCAD AG Page 17

Now the data is imported and the contour lines and the hill shading calculated: As product is saved a ocddem file with the imported elevation data with the name St Moritz_DHM- 2m.ocdDem in the directory of the OCAD file. The intern ocddem format allows a very fast access to the elevation data. Around the map is a light blue frame, that shows the extension of the elevation model. Also there are shown the new contour lines and the calculated hill shading: Set the draft mode (View Draft Mode) to see also the hill shading under the area objects (e.g. forest). Use the draft mode regulator background (e.g. hill shading). to change the transparency of the map and the Copyright OCAD AG Page 18

8 Create a Profile of the Hiking Trail First you have to merge the parts of the hiking trail. Right click on the symbol (1.001 Hiking Trail) in the symbol box. Then click Select Objects by Symbol... If the trails are selected, click on the Merge button in the toolbar. Merge button Click on the trail to select it. You can now create the elevation profile. (DEM Create Profile...) The DEM Profile dialog is displayed. Set the scale to 1: Copyright OCAD AG Page 19

By clicking on Reverse object hiking trail. you can switch the start point with the end point of the selected Add the created profile to the map. (Add to map OK) The DEM Profile dialog is displayed again. You can now close this dialog. ( Close) Zoom out to keep the overview. Click and drag the profile to place it next to the map. OCAD has additionally created symbols and colors for the DEM profile. You can edit those if you like. Copyright OCAD AG Page 20

9 WMS: Adjust Cable Car One cable car near Celerina was renovated. To adjust this change, you can load a WMS with all cable cars from the GeoPortal of the canton of Grisons as a background map. Background Map WMS Web Map Service... The WMS - Web Map Service dialog appears. Click on the Add button Enter in the Add WMS Server dialog the following information: Name: Seilbahnen Graubuenden URL: OK Copyright OCAD AG Page 21

Click in the WMS Web Map Service dialog the Connect button. ( Connect) Select the Seilbahnen_Bahnachsen WMS Layer and add it to your background maps. ( Add selected layers as WMS layers to background maps (online)) You need an internet connection to load a WMS Layer. As soon the layer is loaded, you can close the dialog. ( Close) On the loaded WMS layer you can see cable cars as red lines and ski lifts as blue lines. Zoom in to the part of the map near Celerina. Use the Zoom in locked function and drag the desired area on the map. Copyright OCAD AG Page 22

You can load an aerial photo as a reference. Open the background map Celerina.tif from the St Moritz_OCAD directory (Backgroundmap Open). Select the cable car and place it correctly. Upper end of the former cable car. Upper end of the cable car today. The cable car has now been successfully adjusted. You can now hide the background map. (Background Map Manage...) Click here to hide the background maps. Close Copyright OCAD AG Page 23

10 Export OCAD Internet Map (OIM) With OCAD Internet Map (OIM), you can publish OCAD maps on the internet. Additionally, it is possible to display and query Points of Interest (POI), like Restaurants, Hotels or train stations in the web map, if the POI have been added to the OCAD map before. Choose File Export OCAD Internet Map to export the map as an OCAD Internet Map. Let s first create two new datasets Gastronomie (Gastronomy) and Bahnhof (Train station). Click on New, name the dataset Gastronomie and choose the option Use existing data source. Browse to the file Gastronomie.xls in the box Database file and define the proper Table (gastro$) and Key field (ID). Repeat the procedure to create the dataset Bahnhof (Database file Bahnhof.xls, Table bahn$, Key field ID). Close the database manager. Create a new point symbol as you have learnt it in the previous chapters (e.g. yellow circle with 1mm diameter). As we have established a database connection before, it s now possible to create objects out of the datasets. Database Create Objects from Database Records Put the settings for the dataset Bahnhof as in the picture to the right. Choose the option Selected Symbol. You should have selected your newly created point symbol in the symbol box beforehand. Klick OK and the imported objects will be displayed in the map window with your chosen point symbol. Repeat the procedure for the dataset Gastronomie. Assign the objects to the same symbol as you have chosen before. When you have created the two datasets, hide the selected point symbol (Symbol Hide Objects). Your map is now ready for OIM Export. Copyright OCAD AG Page 24

File Export OCAD Internet Map The export panel will be displayed on the right side. Set the resolution to 300dpi and locate the spatial extend. For this puropse, activate the option Part of map and define the desired extend by help of the black rectangle. Klick on Export and you get into the OCAD Internet Mapp (OIM) Export Wizard. Here you can type in the Map title/ Map subtitle and choose various layout settings. Set them as in the picture below. Be aware to have the option Create tiles active. In the next window, you need to determine the amount of Zoom levels (max 4 in this example). It s possible to assign a different map to each Zoom level. Choose the settings as in the picture below. Copyright OCAD AG Page 25

Click on Next to get into the Layout and functionality settings. Again, choose the settings according to the picture below. Activate the option Map legend (browse to file legend_en.gif) and Advertisement (browse to file logo_stmoritz.gif). Click on Next. In the last step of the OIM Export Wizard you can decide, whether you want to add Points of Interest (POI) or not. In our example, we would like to display hotels, restaurants and train stations in the map. Click on Add. Firstly, we will add the Restaurants in the POI Selector. Choose the dataset Gastronomie. This dataset does not only contain restaurants, but also hotels. Therefore, we need to set up the condition TYP LIKE Restaurant to get only the restaurants out of the dataset. We use NAME as the Location field. The POI should be visible from zoom level 2. The restaurants shall be represented by the Icon Restaurant.PNG in the map window. Copyright OCAD AG Page 26

In a next step, we add the Hotels as POI to the map. Repeat the procedure above. Choose the same dataset, but remember to slightly change the condition (TYPE LIKE Hotel ) and to choose a different Icon (Hotel.PNG). The third layer shall be named Bahnhof. As there are no other contents in the dataset Bahnhof than just train stations, we don t need to type in a condition. We are not going to use an icon to display the train stations. Use a Point (vector) instead and set it up as in the pictures below. Set the opacities to 0 to make the points invisible for the web map users. By now, the mask Points of Interest (POI) should look like as in the picture below. Click on Finish to create the OIM and save your project in a folder of your choice. Please consider that the name of the html file shall not have any empty spaces. Copyright OCAD AG Page 27

During the export, following folders and files will be produced. Click on the StMoritzOIM.html file to open the Ocad Internet Map in your browser. If you have stored your web map files locally, the POI will be dispaly correctly only in Firefox at the moment. However, as soon as the web map files have been uploaded on your web server, the POI should also be display correctly in other common browsers. Let s assume you check your OIM in your browser after the export. The map tiles have been exported properly, but there s something wrong with your POI. So, if you re-export your map, just skip the option Create tiles in the General project settings. The export will thereby run much faster, especially if you have big maps. It s possible to add several Base Layers to one project, e.g. orthophotos in addition to the topographic map. Visit for this purpose. Copyright OCAD AG Page 28

11 Create Objects from Database Records Next, we will insert labels to the map. The labels are stored in an excel sheet. Database Manage Database Connections Click on New and name your database, e.g. labels_engadin. Choose the option Use existing data source and click OK. Browse to Label_engadin.xlsx in the Database file window and select Table (label$) and Key field (ID). Close the Database Manager. Now that we have connected to the database, we will insert the labels. Database Create Objects from Database Records Set the properties as in the left picture below. In the box Assign symbol, choose the file label.cnt from the folder St Moritz_cnt. Click OK and the labels will be displayed in your map as in the right picture below. Copyright OCAD AG Page 29

12 Multiple Representation You probably want to print out the center of St. Moritz on paper. Go to File Print... and define the required extent as in the image below. As you can see, the labels St. Moritz and Lej da San Murezzan are not fully within the print extent. It would be nice to have them on the printout, but at the same time, we do not want to change the labels in the original map. This can be done by creating a representation. Click on Multiple Representation Manager and activate the multiple representation in the head of the dialog. Enter the name of the representation (e.g. St_Moritz) in the field Representation name and click on Add. Click on the Define button and define the extent of the representation with the black rectangle in the map window. Define the extent as it would be the required print extent. Click on Save and activate Show extent area. The extent gets shown with a red frame in the map window. With a double click on the favored representation you can change between the representations. You see the currently showing representation (St_Moritz) in the top right of the dialog. Shift the labels St.Moritz and Lej da San Murezzan into the defined extent of the representation St_Moritz. You can also add additional objects or labels to the representation (e.g. Train station St. Moritz). Copyright OCAD AG Page 30

Activate Show changes to see all objects, that have been moved, changed or deleted compared to the original map, in the Keyline modus. All changes will be saved in the current representation. The original map won't be changed, but just your representation. If you print or export the map, the currently showing representation is printed or exported. You can use the defined extent as an input, when you like to export or print the representation. In the Multiple Representation Manager (Multiple Representation Manager ) click on Original Map and to display again the original map in the map window. The multiple representation can be disabled in an OCAD map by going to Multiple Representation Disable multiple representation... All the representations and their contents get lost. Copyright OCAD AG Page 31

13 XML Script All the steps from chapter 1 to 3 can be replaced by the execution of an XML Script. Open any text editor e.g. Windows Editor and open the file St Moritz_xml_Vorlage from the directory St Moritz_xml. Copyright OCAD AG Page 32

This is an OCAD XML Script for the import of multiple shape files and the assignment of the symbols according to the database records. However, before you are using this XML Script, you first have to adjust its directories. Adjust directories Save the document under the name St Moritz_xml_1. (File Save as...) Copyright OCAD AG Page 33

If you change something on the XML Script, save the new Script always under a new name. If you just overwrite the old XML Script and try to open it, the XML parser will execute the old, cached edition. Save Open now OCAD. An empty (gray) window should now appear. Copyright OCAD AG Page 34

File Execute XML Script... Open the saved file St Moritz_xml_1.xml from the directory St Moritz_xml. Open OCAD now executes the XML Script, which will take a moment. The executed processes are: Open OCAD file Import shape files Assign symbols Save OCAD file The created OCAD file was saved under the name St Moritz_karte.ocd in the directory St Moritz_ocad.
