1 Title: PUMPKIN Software: Serif DrawPlus X8 Author: Teejay Joyce Website: Tutorials by Teejay Skill Level: Intermediate Supplies: None Description: Learn how to create a beautiful pumpkin using Bitmaps for Textures and the Gradient Fill Editor to colour the shapes. LET S GET STARTED! Open any size page. Make sure you are measuring in pixels. To measure in pixels, right click anywhere on your ruler and choose pixels from the drop-down menu. If you do not see your ruler go to View menu and choose Layout Tools/Rulers. Setting the Shape and Colours Set the Line color to None. Choose any colour for the Fill other than black or white. Pick one that will show against your page. For this tutorial, we used green. Make sure your Fill colour is active. We will be applying a gradient and if the Fill colour is not active it will seem like the gradient is not working Choose the Quick Ellipse from the QuickShapes on the Drawing toolbar, then double click in the workspace. The Quick Shape Creator window opens. Set the width and height as follows: Click OK. Width 130 pixels Height 250 pixels The Fill Editor From the Drawing toolbar, choose the Fill tool. Choose Linear from the Context toolbar drop down menu. Click the Edit Fill button next to the drop down menu.
2 This is the top section of the Fill Editor. As we will be using only this top section for now, I will omit the bottom part in these images. What you will see is the colour you have chosen on the left blending to white. We are going to change all these colours. NOTE: If you have a black colour on the left blending to white then you have your LINE active instead of your fill. Change the active colour to the fill. We are going to add 3 colour handles. To add a handle, left click below the colour bar and a handle will appear. Place a Handle in the center. If you want to be precise, there is a % number box you type in the position with 50% being the exact center. Then place a Handle on either side of the center Handle giving a total of 5 handles. Changing the Gradient Colors Now we will change the colour of each handle. Click the first handle then click the colour box. Click More Colours at the bottom of the Fill Editor. Click the Colour Picker on the Color Selector window, then click on the first orange handle colour (below) in this document. This Color Picker allows you to select colors from anywhere on the screen and place that color in your image. Click OK.
3 Repeat this procedure to change the gradient color for the remaining 4 handles. When all the colors have been changed, Click ok. Adding the Effects Select the the Pointer tool from the Drawing toolbar. Next open the Effects from the Effects menu: on the Drawing toolbar. Apply the following attributes Click OK. Inner Glow Blend mode Normal Opacity: 63 Blur: 26 Intensity: 12 Colour: Black Edge: checked We need to duplicate this shape so we can add some texture Choose the Pointer tool. Hold Ctrl and click the object to make a copy of this shape. Choose the Fill tool and you will see your gradient bar across your shape. Turn the gradient 45% by clicking once on the Rotate Right button on the Context toolbar. Drag the top node up and slightly outside the shape. Adding the Texture Find the Transparency tab in the right hand window. Click on the Bitmaps down arrow (circled in the example) and from the dropdown options select Stones.
4 From the Stone bitmap options choose Stone 03. The texture will be instantly applied to the top shape. To reduce the opacity of the bitmap texture (it is far too prominent), use the Pointer tool, then choose the Colour tab and reduce the opacity to around the 40%. With the Pointer Tool, drag a box around this shape and choose group. Making the Pumpkin This one shape is duplicated to make the pumpkin. For the remainder of this tutorial, when you are asked to copy, that means doing CTRL + click on the object using the Pointer tool. 1.Copy your single shape and move it to the left, then copy this shape and move it to the right (example 1). 2.Copy the last shape and move it to the left, then copy the shape and move it to the right letting some of the shapes behind show (example 2). 3.Copy and place the last piece in the center (example 3). 4.Hold Ctrl and push the sides in to shape the last piece (example 4) With the Pointer tool, drag a box around all the shapes of the pumpkin and Group. Making the Stalk Click anywhere in the workspace to deselect the pumpkin. From the colour swatches choose black. Now select the Quick Ellipse from the Drawing toolbar QuickShapes. Double click in the workspace.
5 Set the Width 75 pix, Height 25 pix and click ok. Sometimes the texture is still being applied. To cancel, click on the Transparency tab and choose the None box. Next open the Effects and select Blur from the Effects menu. Change the blur setting to 6 and click OK. Choose the Quick Rectangle and draw a long oblong. Right click and choose Convert to Curves. With the Node tool move the nodes to make a stalk as in this example. Place the blur ellipse we made earlier at the bottom of the stalk. With the Pointer tool, drag a box around all three shapes and Group. To finish the stalk, make an ellipse small enough to fit the stalk. Once you have drawn the ellipse add a light orange color to the Line. Open the Layers tab. Click the small arrow next to the pumpkin. It will open all the pumpkin shapes. Grab the stalk group and drag it down 3 shapes down. Making The Vines All that is left to do now is to draw some vines. Use the Pen or the Pencil tools from the Drawing toolbar for drawing the vines. Experimenting with the Pressure tab to add thick and thin areas to your lines. Now that you have the basic pumpkin, you can drag the shape down to make a fat pumpkin or upward to change the shape.
