1 GENERAL INFORMATION General information Page 1 2 Understanding change, shaping the future Understanding the complex interdependencies within systems of innovation is critical for business, government, science, and society to succeed. For this reason, it is important to recognize change as soon as it emerges in any sector, market or technology. Only by comprehending such change, can we actively influence its longterm economical, technological, societal, governmental, and cultural impact. As an expert partner that uniquely combines socioeconomic and sociotechnical research, the Fraunhofer Group for Innovation Research provides stakeholders with orientation, facilitates them in positioning themselves, and assists in shaping the future in the innovation system. Some 130 researchers from 20 countries help clients and partners from the business, industrial, political, and science communities, in addition to public institutions, to benefit from globalization and digitalization as drivers of innovation. The institute's international projects, network activities and analyses focus on how people can benefit from socio-economic and applied research, as well as from the dynamics of a knowledge-based society and the future of industrial production. The interdisciplinary team of researchers provides businesses, organizations, institutions, countries, local communities and regions with sound scientific support during strategic decision-making processes. Initially founded as the Center for Central and Eastern Europe (MOEZ) in 2006, the institute was renamed the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy IMW in 2016 to reflect its strategic realignment and new areas of focus. The institute has been certified to the DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 DNV-GL standard. On this basis, the institute conducts technology forecasting, enabling a long-term approach to strategic research planning. Fraunhofer INT applies this expertise to all projects for our clients on a customized basis. In addition to these skills, we run our own experimental and theoretical research on the effects of ionizing and electromagnetic radiation on electronic components, as well as on radiation detection systems. To this end, INT is equipped with the latest measurement technology. Our main laboratory and large-scale appliances are radiation sources, electromagnetic simulation facilities and detector systems that cannot be found in this combination in any other civilian body in Germany. For more than 40 years, INT has been a reliable partner to the Federal German Ministry of Defense, which it advises in close cooperation and for which it carries out research into technology analysis and strategic planning as well as radiation effects. INT also successfully advises and conducts research for domestic and international civilian clients: both public bodies and industry, from SMEs to DAX 30 companies. 8 Guest Member Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS Erlangen Member Institutes Page 6 6 Fraunhofer IIS/Kurt Fuchs The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is one of the world s leading application-oriented research institutions for microelectronic and IT system solutions and services. With a total of 970 employees, it is the largest of all Fraunhofer Institutes. Research at Fraunhofer IIS revolves around two guiding topics: In the area of Audio and Media Technologies, the institute has been shaping the digitalization of media for more than 30 years now. Fraunhofer IIS was instrumental in the development of mp3 and AAC and played a significant role in the digitalization of the cinema. Current developments are opening up whole new sound worlds and are being used in virtual reality, automotive sound systems, mobile telephony, streaming and broadcasting. Any mobile phone you buy today, for instance, uses audio technology developed by the institute, while Fraunhofer codecs provide the basis for sound of more than half of all TV broadcasts worldwide and almost all radio and streaming services. The institute s professional tools for digital film and media production are also being used globally. In the context of cognitive sensor technologies, the institute researches technologies for sensor technology, data transmission technology, data analysis methods and the exploitation of data as part of data-driven services and their accompanying business models. This adds a cognitive component to the function of the conventional smart sensor. The results of this research have been applied in the areas of connected mobility, communication and application solutions for the Internet of Things, digitalization of human sensing, product and material monitoring, and business analytics in supply chains.
