1 A Walk through Pages, Buttons, Keys and Menus Introduction Even though almost every handheld GPS more or less delivers the same basic features: Mark, Waypoints, Routes and Tracks - most GPS units, even within a manufacturer's ranges, choose to access features and functions in different ways. GPS manufacturers and Garmin in particular have worked hard over recent years to make the use of GPS more user friendly; the advent of touchscreen devices like the Oregon, Montana & Monterra are the in our opinion amoung the most user friendly on the market. There is now a devide in the Garmin stable between Touchscreen and Button operating systems; both have their followers we train in both systems and like both but at the end of the day "You pays your money and make your Choice". In other words is all down to your personal choice. Garmin over the last few years have completely updated their product offering for Ourdoors Handheld GPS; so in this lesson we are now going to feature the full updated range including New etrex, GPSMap64s, Oregon and Montana & Monterra ranges. Use this brief lesson to find your way around your GPS. You'll soon get the hang of it and once you realise that you can't do much damage by pressing buttons you will gain confidence. Don't be timid; work your way round all the options and you'll be amazed how much your GPS has to offer behind the scenes so to speak. New etrex - GPSMap64s - Oregon - Montana/Monterra All Garmin New Generation Outdoors GPS a multitude of page selections however there are 5 pages that are considered to be the Main Pages and one page that is we've shown you Main Menu - List of menu options > press enter or tap to enter Satellite Page - View Satellites reception & signal strength, Location co-ordinates (when satellites are active) Map Page - View enabled map at current location Compass Page - When GPS is calibrated GPS will show North & Directional Arrow when navigating. The etrex 20 is tough & waterproof and takes the middle ground by offering a 2.2 sunlight readable colour screen, familiar easy to use button operation, great GPS reception with Hotfix, pre-loaded worldwide basemap, MicroSD card slot and massive 1.7GB internal memory, is geocaching friendly with geocaching manager and supports paperless geocaching, BaseCamp & BirdsEye Select compatible. With its MicroSD card slot and 1.7 GB of internal memory the etrex 20 lets you load the full range of Garmin maps; each BirdsEye Select map voucher will allow you to download 1500sqk of Explorer Ordnance Survey maps. We recommend that users of both etrex 20/30 use BirsdsEye Select for premium maps for their favourite areas and then maybe download a free background map for other areas (download free Garmin OS background map). The etrex 30 adds 3 axis electronic compass & altimeter and wireless sharing between compatible Garmin devices. The new etrex range uses virtually the same buttons & keys as the old etrex

4 The new etrex range uses a combination of buttons located on the side of the unit and the Thumb Stick located on the front of the unit seen above. Move through the Main Menu options using the Thumb Stick > a single press/enter to make a selection. The exercises below are intended to get you familiar with moving around the pages & sub-menus, we will move on to correct setup in the next lesson. Exercises for New etrex Ranges - Finding your way round the pages 1) Use the Power/Backlight button switch On/Off when you power up the device the Main Menu will be displayed > use the same button to bring up the backlight 2) In the Main Menu use the Thumb Stick to select Compass > press the Thumb Stick once to enter Compass page if your compass is calibrated (covered in Setup) then the compass will indicate North > press Options button to reveal sub-menu of options > press Back button to go back one step to Compass Page > press Back button again to return to Main Menu. 3) In the Main Menu use the Thumb Stick to select Satellite Page > press Options button to reveal sub-menu of options > press Back button to go back one step to Satellite Page > press Back button again to return to Main Menu. 4) In the Main Menu use the Thumb Stick & Options button to navigate & investigate all menus and sub-menus on offer. Don't worry about setup yet as we will be covering that in the next lesson.

5 5) In the Main Menu use the Thumb Stick to select Map Page > press Options button to reveal submenu of options > use Zoom in/out buttons to zoom in to scale of 120m or 500' (scale indicator is seen botton left of the map page) 6) In any menu press & hold Thumb Stick will instantly create a Mark/Waypoint at your current location (if satellites are active) > use Thumb Stick to select Done and enter will save Mark into user database. Finding your way around - GPS 62 & updated 64 Ranges In all fairness for most people it s very hard to choose between the GPSMap64 & the Oregon 450 in the end it comes down to the whether you prefer the familiar easy to use buttons of the 62s or the touchscreen of the Oregon range. We like the fact that the Garmin Discoverer Whole GB 50k OS Map data50k and NavTeq turn by turn routing comes on one MicroSD card which simply slots into the GPS and you re ready to go. The device which is fully waterproof & robust offers 2.6 inch sunlight readable screen, high quality GPS reception with HotFix, 3 axis electronic compass, wireless sharing, free & easy access to Garmin BaseCamp PC software for route planning, a huge range of UK, international mapping, satellite imagery and custom maps. The item that makes all the new generation Garmin devices stand out form the crowd is that you can now view the contents of your OS Discoverer mapping in BaseCamp for route planning; solving that old issue of buying your maps twice. Understandably the unit is very popular with fans of the GPSMap60/62 as the guys at Garmin have more or less kept the familiar look, screen and easy to use operating system, they ve simply updated the processors to be compatible with the new OS maps and added the a huge internal memory, worldwide basemap and wireless sharing across the range. The GPSMap62 & GPSMap64s ranges use virtually the same buttons & keys as the old GPSMap60 Range

Finding your way around - Oregon 600 series The Oregon 600 series has taken the place of the now discontinued Oregon 450/550 series and is already proving to be as popular as the previous Oregon and will no doubt replace its predecessor as UK's best selling GPS. Little changes in the operating system just a few minor changers in presentation. Justifiably the 3 inch sunlight readable display offered by the Oregon and the easy to use touchscreen operation bundled with the OS mapping whole GB bundle put the unit in a class on its own only challenged by its new big brother the Montana 600. One major change is the addition of an additional button called the User key (4 in image below) it allows you to configure the page you wish to use at the press on the button; using either Single Push, Double Push or Push & Hold. Like the GPSMap62/64 range the Oregon 600 series come bundled with Garmin Discoverer Whole GB 50k mapping with street level mapping that delivers turn by turn routing all installed on a Micro SD card which simply slots into the GPS and you re ready to go. Press & hold the Power button to switch on the device 2. From the Main Menu tap double bar at bottom of page to move to Lower Draw 3. Select Setup to open Setup Menu > tap X to close Setup Menu and return to Main Menu 4. From Main Menu select Map, Trip Computer and Compass in turn and return to Main Menu 5. Go to the Lower Pane and select Satellite to view the status of your device ) this will display your signal strength and current location if locked onto satellites. Finding your way around Montana & Monterra Ranges When Garmin introduced the Montana range it took the features in the popular Oregon 450 and added then to a much larger 4" screen; since then the Oregon 450 has been updated with new features leaving the Montana in need if an upgrade. However in 2014 Garmin launched the Monterra which essentially offers the same impressive screen size and then adds a shed load of innovative features it's the first WiFi enabled outdoors GPS that gives you the choice of using Garmin's branded mapping or by using the versatility of Android to search the Internet for other mapping, navigation and geocaching solutions in the Google Play Store. Connecting Monterra is a piece of cake; we simply had to look for a wireless network and it's settings in the device and allow the device to connect by adding permissions. If you use an android smartphone and have previously used a GPS then you will immediately recognise the operating systems and look of the pages which have been cleverly united.
