1 About Data Fields, Dashboard, Information Windows, Trip and Housekeeping For many GPS enthusiasts being able to review their performance after a days walking is very satisfying; this is where a GPS really comes into its own giving you additional information about your trip on the move. From the moment you switch on and lock onto satellites your GPS starts recording your trip data. It is a continuous stream of information some of which may be relevant to you and some not. The trick is to ensure that the information you find useful on each page is displayed in the information windows. GPST Tip - Trip data will continue to be recorded until you clear or reset your trip data; if you want an accurate record of your distance say on a walk you must clear your trip data at the beginning of the walk. We refer to this management of trip data as Housekeeping. Information windows can be seen in the Main Navigation pages; Map, Compass, Elevation and Trip Computer pages. In either the sub menu or setup; depending on the model you are using, you will be able to edit the orientation of the map and add/remove data fields & dashboard options (like compass on map page). Essentially you can setup the pages with or without information windows and choose the combination of information windows that suits your mode of travel and navigation. Here we have setup the Data Fields on our Compass Page to show 4 Small Data Fields and chosen to view Destination at Next, Distance to Next, our Current Location (in our chosen grid format) and finally the Battery Strength indicator. The data field windows can be easily changed to reflect the mode of navigation your are in. Garmin have recently updated the data field configuration options initially for the Montana Range but I'm sure if you check the list of Data Field options you will be amazed at the list of options open to you.

Having details of your ascent on view is not much use if you are sailing the oceon blue; here we try and show you how you can set the dashboard & information to match your navigational needs. Data Fields - on the navigational pages in most case you can choose to have 0, 1 large, 2 small or 4 small information windows Dashbord - if you select Dashboard it will allow you to select a Dashboard to suit your navigational needs Profiles - allow you to set up a set of application icons or pages together in one place and then switch between saved profiles The Montana Range comes with 8 Profiles for the various target user activities: Recreation, Geocaching, Automotive, Marine, Fitness, Camera, Classic and Motorcycle. You can edit these or create your own personal Profile(s)

In the Oregon & Montana you can edit the information on display in the data fields by simply tapping the window and changing the selected information; Dashboard changes are found in > Setup > Map.

In the etrex & GPSMap ranges you use the page sub-menu. In the Oregon & Montana you can edit the information on display in the data fields by simply tapping the window and changing the selected information; Dashboard changes are found in > Setup > Map. What information can be displayed? The list of data fields and their definitions will be found in the list below. This list was updated in Jan 2012 when Garmin added new data field & dashboard options for the Montana & updated the options for the rest of the ranges. The list provides a short description of each data field option, some of which are only supported by devices interfaced to the unit you are using. Which data you have displayed in your information windows on any page is completely down to personal choice. Data Field Categories With the growing number of data fields to choose from, a single list in alphabetical order gets to be long. To help streamline the configuration process, data fields are now grouped into categories. These categories are Time, Speed and Distance, Navigation, Trip Data, Elevation, Aviation, Current Status, Stopwatch Items, Heading, On Road Navigation, and Other. Some data fields apply to more than one category. For example, the Trip Odometer field can be found under both Trip Data and Speed and Distance categories. All data fields can still be viewed in a single list by selecting All Categories at the top of the categories list.

As we explained at the start of this lesson from the moment you switch on and lock onto satellites your GPS starts recording your trip data which is displayed on a cumulative basis in the information windows of various pages in your GPS. If we want the data recorded on any trip to be relevant to that trip only then we must clear the data pages of your Trip some of which may be relevant to you and some not. The trick is to ensure that the information you find useful on each page is displayed in the information windows.
