1 Monterra Opens the doors to Maps & Apps Garmin are slowly but thoughtfully moving us towards the delivery of information and mapping for the outdoors enthusiast by introducing connectivity to the internet in their outdoors devices. The first range to get the treatment was the Oregon 600 series launched in the summer of 2013; it lets you connect and sync data like routes and tracks with your smartphone using Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology and a BaseCamp app installed on your smartphone. To date we've been unable to test this connectivity as there is only an app for iphone; hopefully there will be an android app soon. Monterra takes this connectivity a stage further by being the first WiFi enabled outdoors GPS that gives you the choice of using Garmin's branded mapping or by using the versatility of Android to search the Internet for other mapping, navigation and geocaching solutions in the Google Play Store. Connecting Monterra is a piece of cake; we simply had to look for a wireless network and it's settings in the device and allow the device to connect by adding permissions. If you use an android smartphone and have previously used a GPS then you will immediately recognise the operating systems and look of the pages which have been cleverly united.

2 On Opening our Monterra we were reassured to find all the expected Garmin GPS features still present Map, Compass & Trip pages and found we could easily switch between pages by swiping left/right or touching icons & apps. We were eager to see how we could download what we thought would be our most used outdoor apps from ArcGIS, Geocaching.com, Memory-Map and ViewRanger: an evaluation of these apps will follow later in this lesson. Before going there let's look at what maps come pre-installed in the device. Pre-installed Maps Monterra in the UK comes with some basic mapping but no GB Bundle as the thinking behind the product is that folk will use the internet to access their own mapping solutions and keeps the price of what is not a cheap product under 600 (just). Our unit came with the following mapping products pre-installed Recreational Map of Europe v4 Worldwide Autoroute Basemap DEM A selection of demo BirdsEye Select maps from around the world (best deleted once viewed as they are only taking up memory) Some trial mapping data licenced from Ordnance Survey which will be erased from the device at the end of the trial period on21/2/14 We ve had a look in the internal memory of the Monterra and a sizeable chunk of the internal storage of.6 GB (With Worldwide BaseMap) However 3GB is taken up with the pre-installed mapping leaving approx 3 GB available for you to add/download additional mapping This base mapping isn t routable nor is it detailed enough for detailed navigation; so most people are going to be thinking about adding more detailed maps in some way. Our experience is that the most popular way to buy OS maps is bundled with the device however this isn t on offer with the Monterra so you will need to give careful consideration before you decide which direction you take when buying premium maps. OS Discoverer Maps The great thing about Monterra is that it leaves you with options; you can go for Garmin s OS Discoverer range available by download or pre-installed on SD card or use the wireless capabilities of the device to search for and download mapping apps like Memory-Map & ViewRanger. Firstly let s look at what your options are if you go down Garmin branded route all of which can be accessed through our website GPS shop Birdseye Select map vouchers SRP Each voucher now offers an enhanced 1500 SQK of Explorer mapping which can be downloaded in single or multiple areas and installed in the internal memory of your device GB Discoverer National Parks with 25k Explorer map data SRP preinstalled on SD card simply plug and play most popular titles Lakes & Coast to Coast GB Discoverer with Whole GB OS Land Ranger 50k scale mapping (includes terrain contours, elevations, summits, paths, routable roads and geographical points and importantly premium NAVTEQ which is the same road data used in Garmin s leading automotive products. Search for an address or point of interest, and your Garmin device displays turn-by-turn directions to your destination.

Monterra Home page with apps installed Download PDF - Monterra Setup OS Maps from the Internet using Google Apps As we ve already found Monterra allows you to wirelessly connect your device to the Internet; once connected you can visit the Google Play Store to download apps to your device. Once in the store you will have to sign in with your Gmail address & password, we found it easier to create a completely new Gmail address & password to use with these apps. We have worked with our friends at both Memory-Map & ViewRanger over the years and have recently updated our 25k Mapping on our PC from MM and were keen to evaluate how easy it is to add 25k maps to our android smartphone using both MM & ViewRanger apps. Both apps were found in the Play Store by simply using Search Google Play and the really good news is that the apps are free (Don t get too excited because the maps themselves aren t free). We see both apps in Monterra appealing to different folk: Memory-Map to existing or new users of MM PC software for use with their Adventurer GPS or now with Monterra. ViewRanger to existing users of the smartphone app who now plan to add ViewRanger to Monterra

Use the menu tab bottom right on Monterra to open MM menu s (see right). The app offers all the navigation features you would expect, waypoints, routes & tracks in a simplistic but effective way. Once purchased maps can be copied from your MM computer based software to the app and opened in Monterra. How to download/copy maps and user from your MM computer based software to app in Monterra is not obvious but fairly straight forward once you get your head around it. ViewRanger App Voted best one of the best apps of 2013 by Google Play, 5G s by The Gadget Show and a five-star must have application by the Sunday Times ViewRanger is the most popular and talked about outdoors app for almost all platforms. We have been using the android app for some time on our smartphones and ipad; so it seemed like a logical extension to add it to Monterra. No worksheets required here as downloading the app and maps is so straightforward; simply go to this page on their website to download an app suitable for your device. We recommend that you register to get access to the full range of ViewRanger features as not only are you able to navigate using the GPS even without a signal you can record your adventures complete with key stats and then go-online and view, store & share them using ViewRanger s free web planning tools by signing into your My ViewRanger Account which give you access to an impressive array of maps from around the world. One star ViewRanger feature is Buddy Beacon; it let s you share your location with others and view the location of others on your smartphone; used to great effect by the BBC on the last two One Show Children in Need rickshaw challenges which raised astonishing amounts of money for the good cause. Geocachers use this app to seek out treasures called geocaches. These containers are cleverly hidden by geocachers from the 5-million-strong global community. There are over two million geocaches hidden around the world, so there s almost certainly one near you. All you need to begin your adventure is a smartphone with this app and a free or premium Geocaching account. The download & login was trouble free and being reasonably familiar with the home website we found moving around the app reassuringly familiar. After login we were able type in our geo-location as usual and view a list of caches near the location. What was really interesting was that we were able to select any caches we were interested in and add them to an Offline List; essentially these caches were just parked in our device and ready to go. We found this a much neater system than using Pocket Queries and easier to setup and use. Thinking forwards we see the possibility of creating offline lists and saving them in My Garmin Cloud Storage and sharing them across our devices. This depends on a Basecamp app being made available for Android which we understand is under consideration. Being a premium member we were able to view all details, logs and hints and log our finds. Monterra & Geocaching App could be the

9 caching Holy Grail truly delivering access to caching on the go in a waterproof robust device with internet access and mapping. ArcGIS App We ve come across various GPS Systems in our time working with companies like the Forestry Commission who are wide users of GPS in their line of work. One of the issues has always been the complications of the conversion of user data collected by a standard GPS into GIS format. Monterra opens the door to format compatibility between GIS and GPS using the ArcGIS App which could save a lot of time and trouble converting data when moving between systems. If you are an existing Esri customer this application is part of your ArcGIS system. You can share your corporate maps and extend the reach of your GIS to your Android devices within your enterprise using ArcGIS Server. BaseCamp App Garmin recently updated the Oregon Series of Outdoors GPS; we believe one of the driving reasons for the update was the introduction of connectivity between your Oregon or Fenix GPS and smartphone and BaseCamp mobile app (iphone only initially). Allowing you to Sync your data such as waypoints, geocaches, tracks and images to the Garmin Cloud, and access from anywhere via your smartphone and BaseCamp mobile app Share Your Adventures When you re logged in to your My Garmin account through BaseCamp Mobile, you can upload up to 150 MB of data for free to your Cloud account. The next time you launch the app on your phone, or pull up the full version of BaseCamp on your PC or Mac, this data will automatically appear in your collection there s no need to connect your device directly to your computer. You can then organize this data into a Garmin Adventure using the full version of BaseCamp on your computer. Easily add pictures, videos and notes then publish your adventure to brag to your buddies about your travels or let fellow explorers follow in your footsteps. Summary We have to say we re pretty impressed with Monterra, it moves Garmin forward in their quest to maintain their position as the market leader in the world of outdoors GPS a key part of which is the delivery of information, data, maps & geocaches on the go and not just in the recreational field. GPS is widely used by in an outdoors commercial context especially when combined with a good quality camera that can geo-reference images. The wireless connectivity included in Monterra is going to widen the appeal to outdoors professionals and offer more reasonably alternatives to companies like Trimble. For the geocaching and outdoors enthusiast it s an interesting if expensive product however we expect it to gain a following especially in the geocaching community who will like the access to maps & apps Download the Basecamp Mobile App
