1 KISS WiFi setup and configuration Thanks to Alex aka FedorComander and his never ending struggle for making the KISS feature-rich and increasing the usability we now have a remote solution via WiFi. The modules can be flashed with the latest firmware by Alex and it will allow both Access Point and Client Mode. KISS WiFi can be used with Windows, Linux, OSX, ios and Android. GUIs for all OSes are in the works. There are several WiFi modules on the market based on the ESP /12E chip We have recently tested 2 modules, both below 10. First one comes with a USB, so no fiddeling with FTDI USB/UART. NodeMcu Lua ESP8266 ESP-12E CH340G

2 Prerequisits For Windows you will need a driver and a flashing tool. Driver for Win32/64: Flashing tool: You might also need Apple Bonjour to make the client mode of the module accessible: Unpack the driver, plug in the module via USB and select the driver from the extracted folder. The device should now show up with a COM port in the device manager. Unplug from the PC and short the D2 to GND in order to bring the module into flashing mode. Unpack the flashing tool, plug the module in again and start the ESP8266Flasher.exe from either the Win32 or Win64 subfolder.

3 Select the modul's COM port, then click on "Config". Deselect the first checkbox, select the second and click on the wheel. Select the path to the extracted kissfc-wifi bin Tip: if for some reasons flashing went wrong you can reset the device to default by swapping the two check boxes and flashing again. Go back to the "Operation" tab and click "FLASH". The flashing now should start. The blue LED on the module will blink until the flasher tool says "Ready". You are done with flashing, the module should now work as a KISS wireless connection.

4 Now for the Wiring For a connection of the module, attach it to the KISS FCs serial port. Make sure you have GND and 5V connected and Tx to Rx & Rx to Tx like shown above in pic#2. You can use the 4 pads left of the USB or the Port 2 plug like shown below.

5 WLAN/WiFi configuration Power up the FC & WiFi and have a look at your WLAN environment. In AP mode the module should show up like this, will always be "KISS-WIFI-" followed by the serial number of the module to make it unique. Standard key for the module will be "kisskiss". You should change it afterwards so no one else can access your KISS FC! Now connect your PC to that access point. Once the connection is established your standard browser should start up & show the main configuration page like this: You can now configure the module for Client Mode. Both AP and Client mode will work in parallel. Click "Join Network" and select your WiFi network, submit your WLAN key and save it. Once you have it set up correctly you can now connect your computer to your network again. You can also create your own network, update the firmware of the module and reset it.

6 Now start the KISS Chrome App GUI v1.14 Select KISS WiFi instead of a COM port and you should be able to change settings wirelessly and save them. Note: Atm you will only be able to save the values without a lipo connected. Power the FC through 5V instead. You can either use the 5V/GND on the radio/receiver port or by using V-in. Crowtail Serial Wifi Alex is using the following module for developement: Crowtail Serial Wifi (ESP-12 based). This module does not have a USB interface, so FTDI/USB/UART is needed to flash it for the first time.

7 After that, you can update the module firmware OTA (Over-The-Air). The module has a handy connector, which can be connected to the KISS serial port. You can use half of the KISS CARRIER cable for that like shown below. We have tested the KISS-WIFI with ESP-12 and ESP-12E modules. Flashing via Command Line If you prefer to flash your module via command line you can use the esptool v from here: Extract both the esptool and the.bin file into the same folder, start a command line from there and type Path2yourfolder\esptool win32\esptool win32>esptool.exe -vv -cd ck -cb cp com5 -ca 0x cf kissfc-wifi.ino.bin where com5 is the name of your current COM port. It differs depending on your OS. On Mac it ll look like this: esptool.exe -vv -cd ck -cb cp /dev/cu.usbserial-a1g6gli -ca 0x cf kissfc-wifi.ino.bin Proof of Concept
