1 Updating PCDART to version Please read all directions before proceeding. If you use PocketDairy for Android, PPC and/or Palm: Sync your handheld with PCDART to save any current information prior to installing the new version. If you do NOT sync, you risk LOSING data that might be on the handheld unit. Make sure PCDART is CLOSED before proceeding. 1. Insert the PCDART CD in the CD-ROM drive. If the PCDART installer screen does not appear after a few moments, click START, RUN and type D:\CDINST (replace D: with the correct CDROM drive letter), and press Enter. 2. Choose a language and click Yes to continue. 3. Click Update PCDART and follow the screen prompts. Click Finish when the installation is complete. 4. Close the PCDART Installation screen. UPDATING POCKET DAIRY (Existing Users only) Android Devices Upgrade - Users with a Wi-Fi connection: Update PCDART; if not done previously. If you use PocketDairy on a Pocket PC, you will need to reinstall PocketDairy on those devices after updating Android(s). If you use PocketDairy on a Palm device, reinstalling PocketDairy is NOT required. At Your Computer 1. Open PCDART and click on the Pocket Dairy icon. 2. Click on Install PocketDairy tab. 3. Click Install PocketDairy for Android. If Windows Firewall gives a prompt, choose Allow Access to proceed. SUMMER

On Your Android Device 1. Open the browser and go to www.drms.org/pd or scan the QR code (right). 2. When asked to Replace application, click OK and follow the prompts on your device.

If you use PocketDairy on a Palm device, reinstalling PocketDairy is NOT required. At Your Computer 1. Open PCDART and click on the Pocket Dairy icon. 2. Click on Install PocketDairy tab. 3. Connect your Android device to your PC with the USB cable and mount device to computer. 2. On your PC, right-click on the black icon in your desktop system tray; left-click on Show Sync Details to open the PocketDairy Synchronizer window. 3. Click the PocketDairy menu item; click Copy PocketDairy to Mobile Device; click Hide Details to close. 4. Disconnect USB. 5. Open PocketDairy; go to Menu, Settings; tap on the Program Version to check for updates. 6. When the new version is found, tap Yes at the prompt to install it now. 7. When asked to Replace application, click OK and follow the prompts on your device. Upgrade to PocketDairy Android is complete. Window Mobil Devices (Pocket PC) 1. Update PCDART; if not done previously. 2. Connect your pocket pc to your pc. 3. Open PCDART and click the PocketDairy icon. Click Install PocketDairy tab. Click Install PocketDairy for PPC. 4. Once the installation is complete, check your pocket pc screen for instructions. Update to PocketDairy for Windows Mobile is complete. SUMMER

3 PCDART Version New Features Genomics Data Database Items Added to Manage Genomics Data 51 new items (listed below) enable PCDART users to design reports that combine management information with genomics results. These reports can be used effectively by breeders of elite genetics, as well as commercial producers. A primary advantage of genomics data is that information will be available early. Decisions for selection, breeding, and culling can be made early (on heifers), which can significantly improve a herd s profit potential. How Genomics Data Flow from DRMS to the Producer A genomic download (GL file) of cows and heifers for each herd with genomic tested animals is used to deliver genomic data to PCDART. In the future, new GL files will also be generated when AIPL releases new analyses monthly. The new data will be available on demand in PCDART by doing a Genetic Download from the Tasks menu. Beginning with this version, producers will get a HERDCODE.GL in the updating download, which will be appended to the Genomic Master file (HERDCODE.GEN) in the HERDCODE folder. By design, this version of PCDART will NOT deliver genomic data to technicians, consultants, or extension. Milk by Week Feature Accurately Tracks Fresh Cow Milk Production The Milk By Week feature in PCDART reports provides a more accurate method of tracking fresh cow milk production.

Milk by Week Feature Accurately Tracks Fresh Cow Milk Production The Milk By Week feature in PCDART reports provides a more accurate method of tracking fresh cow milk production. Milk for a given week can be estimated so that the Days In Milk Range and Average Days In Milk are consistent. Here is how it works: 14 new database items (DBIs) in PCDART track average milk in Weeks 1-14 (DBIs ). They can be used in any report. DBI 641 is Week 1 milk, DBI 642 is Week 2 milk, and so on. Weekly milk is an estimate of each cow s average production during the week in question. Weekly milk estimates are not projections. They are determined from test day weights in the current lactation, but do not project past the most recent test day. Weekly averages before first test day are estimated using lactation curves for that cow. Weekly averages between test days are determined using linear estimates between test days. Weekly milk for herds that have daily weights is an average of the daily production for 7 days. SUMMER

5 Why is Milk By Week More Accurate? First Test Day Milk and 0-40 Day Milk are commonly used measures to track milk production of fresh cows. These measures have merit, but can be misleading at times due to inconsistent test intervals. Potential errors occur when using these metrics: First Test Day Milk Range in DIM on Test Day. Typically cows are less than 30 DIM on their first test day. If test day intervals are inconsistent, DIM on first test day can vary greatly from test day to test day. For example, suppose a herd tested Dec 11, Jan 15, and Feb 12. On the Jan 15 test day, first test day DIM range is 1 to 35 days. On the Feb 12 test day, first test day DIM range is 1 to 28 days. It would be potentially inappropriate to compare the average first test day milk weights from the Jan and Feb test days, given such a difference in DIM range. Cows usually increase rapidly in milk production each day for the first 30 to 40 days of lactation. A large variation in DIM on test day can distort the comparison of first test day milk from test day to test day. Average DIM on Test Day. Calving patterns can skew average DIM on test day. If a herd tests consistently on 30 day intervals, the DIM range is consistent. However, suppose on one test day the average DIM at first test is 12 days, and on the next test day the average DIM on first test is 20. In this case, it would be inappropriate to compare first test day yields. Herds using synchronization programs commonly have clusters of calvings that can distort average DIM on first test day. Milk from 0-40 DIM Average DIM on Test Day. For the same reasons as First Test Day Milk, average DIM for cows that are 1-40 DIM can vary from test to test based on calving patterns. Narrowing the milk estimated to a given week removes the wide swings in average DIM on first test that can occur when using First Test Day Milk and Milk from 0-40 DIM metrics. 7 Reports New and Enhanced Database Items 198 Dam Birth Date Milk by Week for Weeks 1-14; see pages 4-5 for more details on the Milk by Week feature and 850 display genomics data; added under the Genetic tab in User-Defined reports for Milking Machine Interfaces will not display data if current milk is not available. Database items available in User-Defined Reports are now available for Cow Graphs, Herd Statistics DBI lists, and syncing with PocketDairy. Report Enhancements Report 102 has new design to include beginning and ending of the month inventory for projecting eight months; also added option to include or not include diagnosed pregnant cows and/or heifers. Report 126 Preg Rate Summary: added button to display in spreadsheet format; report must be previewed before the spreadsheet file can be viewed. Other Report Features Report Set can be scheduled to send to csv file(s). Crosstabs now defaults to open in graphs. Add to Controls checkbox for sub-grouping will exclude other animals from reports and crosstabs. Cow Page CtlF1-Custom tab allows display of user-defined sets of data for cows and heifers with up to 6 customized panels. - Display database items, health and status records, sort gate, protocols assigned, chores, milk data, and test day data. PCDART System Improved Program Update system: - Automatic Program Update will update only critical files when uploading and downloading test day files. - On-Demand Program Update will update both critical files and additional files to provide feature updates and non-critical bug fixes. Use menu item Tasks Program Update. Flexible Import tool for user-defined.csv files; select a data file, define settings and select available transactions based on your data file. Use menu item Tasks Import/Export Flexible Import. Enhanced Backup and Restore features: - Backup on Exit now defaults to Full Backup. - Backups from an older PCDART version will restore properly to a newer version. - File names longer than 8 characters will restore properly. Program Setup has checkbox option to disable Dashboard. Enter Group Number and String Number for Calf 1 and Calf 2 on P1 Calved Screen. Heat Monitor feature added to File Management Options. Heifer string numbers will be uploaded and included on the DHI-202 Herd Summary and the DHI-302 Consultant Summary. SUMMER
