Firmware Upgrade The following is a step-by-step firmware upgrade manual. For the example, a Solaro QR DSP will be used. It is strongly recommended that you check the Xilica website ( frequently for the latest software and firmware versions, as these updates may contain critical bug fixes and new features. Note: Using an older version of software with a newer firmware or newer software with an older firmware will work but some of the features may not be available and bugs could exist. Before you begin, check your software and firmware versions. 1. In Xilica Designer s Network View, select Start Network View. The Network View shows all processors and devices connected to the network. The device s current firmware version is displayed here. (Ex. Version 1.0.0) 2. To view the current software version, click on the About tab at the top of the software. This window will display your current software version. Matching the Firmware To assist you in determining which firmware file is appropriate for your device, refer to the chart below. Note: The file structure may be different from the date that this list was created. Always check the Xilica website ( to keep updated. #_#_# Represents the 3 digit version code of the firmware update. (SOLARO_#_#_#.img) Solaro series: QR, FR (NEUTRINO_#_#_#.img) Neutrino series: A, A-D (AES), A-N (Dante), A-ND (Dante, AES) (UNO_#_#_#.img) Uno series: U, U-D (AES), U-N (Dante), U-ND (Dante, AES) (NEUTRINO-AEC_#_#_#.img) Neutrino AEC Series (UNO-AEC_#_#_#.img) Uno AEC Series (RIO_#_#_#.img) Rio Series (NEUPANEL MINI_#_#_#.img) NeuPanel Mini Series: K1, K4, S4, S8, S4K1 (NeuPanel Touch_#_#_#.zip) NeuPanel Touch Device 3
Step-by-Step Firmware Upgrade Guide The hardware device must be connected and operational (Green indicator) before upgrading the firmware. 1. Download the latest firmware version for your device from our website. ( In Network View, all the units on the network are displayed. The network connection indicator is displayed at the top left of each device. 2. Save any design files from the device onto your computer. All programmed data on the device will be erased during the upgrade process. (To save, navigate to the File tab at the top left of the software and click Save.) After the firmware upgrade is complete, you may reload saved design files back into the device. 3. Right click the device that you would like to update. Select Firmware Upgrade. 4. A pop up window will ask you if you d like to proceed with the firmware upgrade. Select OK to proceed. 4
5. Navigate to the appropriate firmware file that you have downloaded from our website. (Ex. A Solaro QR is being updated, so the firmware file for this device at the time of this document is Solaro_1_0_1.img.) Select the correct file and select Open. 6. A status bar in the device window will monitor the Firmware upgrade progress. 7. When the Firmware has been uploaded to the device, the device will automatically restart and update its internal data. This may take several minutes. 8. During this period, the device network indicator will turn RED and appear offline. DO NOT POWER OFF THE DEVICE as the device is performing self-initialization. 9. Once the device is initialized, the status indicator will become Yellow. This indicates that the device does not have a design file loaded to it yet. NOTE: Powering Off your device during a firmware upgrade can result in a complete corruption of the processor. If this happens, please continue to USB Firmware Recovery on page 5. Note: If more than one unit needs a firmware upgrade, you can save time by updating them all at the same time. This can be done as long as they are the same Network and have a green network indicator (connected and operational), as displayed on the Network View page. 10. The network indicator of the device should now be green and the device is ready for use. 5
USB Firmware Recovery If the device O/S is corrupted for some reason during the upgrade (Ex. Device is powered OFF while device is writing O/S), the user will have to perform a full firmware recovery to the CPU/DSP board. Please note that Firmware Recovery will erase the entire device. Make sure you save your changes beforehand. The full firmware recovery process will take up to minutes to complete. Solaro devices have 3 different hardware components that require proper firmware to be loaded in order to function correctly. These three components are: 1. Main board 2. CPU/DSP board 3. GPIO option cards The firmware version of these components is upgraded through USB connection. To upgrade each individual component, please follow the procedure below. Main board recovery 1. Download the latest main board firmware file (.xfw) from the Xilica website. ( 2. Holding the IP reset button, power ON the device (either through external power or PoE). The device will be booted in recovery mode. In recovery mode, the blue power LED will begin flashing in a special pattern. The device will quickly flash 8 times in one second and then off for another second. 3. Connect the Device USB to your host computer. 4. Launch the Xilica Designer software. Start Network view and select your device. 5. Under the top tab Device Management, select Solaro USB Firmware Recovery. Then click Solaro Advance Recovery, then Main board Firmware Recovery. Please note that Xilica Designer projects must be closed for this function. 6. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the USB recovery. The firmware recover will take approximately 5 minutes. Once completed, the device will automatically restart and be ready for use. 6
CPU/DSP board recovery 1. Download the full firmware file for your device from the Xilica website. ( (Approximately 100Mbytes in.xfw format) 2. Holding the IP reset button, power ON the device (Either through external power or PoE). The device will be booted in recovery mode. In recovery mode, the blue power LED will begin flashing in a special pattern. The device will quickly flash 8 times in one second and then off for another second. 3. Connect the device via USB to the host computer. Also connect the Ethernet port so that it can communicate with your host computer. The second stage of the recovery requires Ethernet access to the device. 4. Launch the Xilica Designer software. Start Network view and select your device. 5. Under the top tab Device Management, select Solaro USB Firmware Recovery. Then click CPU Board Firmware Recovery. 6. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the USB Firmware recovery. 7. Firmware Recovery will erase the entire device! This process will take minutes to complete. 8. When complete, the device will automatically reboot and it will appear in Network view. At this stage, the process is only half complete. It will appear in Network view in Recovery mode. In this mode, the only action available is to perform the second half of the recovery. 9. Right click on the device block and select Firmware Recovery. You will be asked to select the Firmware file. Select the downloaded firmware file from our website. The device will then perform the second stage of the recovery. This will take approximately 5 minutes. Please do NOT power off the device. 10. Once completed, the device will automatically restart and be ready for use. 7
GPIO board 1. Download the latest GPIO firmware file (.xfw) from the Xilica website. ( 2. Holding the IP reset button, power ON the device. (Either through external power or PoE) The device will be booted in recovery mode. In recovery mode, the blue power LED will begin flashing in a special pattern. The device will quickly flash 8 times in one second and then off for another second. 3. Connect the device via USB to the host computer. 4. Launch the Xilica Designer software. Start Network view and select your device. 5. Under the top tab Device Management, select Solaro USB Firmware Recovery. Then click Solaro Advance Recovery, then GPIO I/O board Firmware Recovery. Please note that Xilica Designer projects must be closed for this function. 6. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the firmware recovery. 7. This process will take approximately five minutes. Once completed, the device will automatically restart and be ready for use. 8
Solaro QR device diagnostic test For Solaro QR devices, the diagnostic functionality is already included in the firmware. Since the diagnostic functionality is built into the production firmware already, you DO NOT need to load in a different firmware to the device. Simply follow the procedure below to perform the diagnostic test. 1. Connect the device USB port to the computer and launch the Xilica Designer software. 2. Connect the Ethernet port and Dante port to a switch. Or you may connect these two ports by a network cable. The diagnostic test will test the physical connection of the Ethernet port and Dante port. 3. Launch the Xilica Designer software. Start Network view and select your device. 4. Under the top tab Device Management, select Solaro USB Firmware Recovery. Then click Solaro Advance Recovery, then Boot device into diagnostic mode. 5. There are two test modes: Quick test and Full test. The quick test takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. The full test takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes to complete. 6. Select the test mode and follow the on-screen instructions to power reset the device. 7. Once the application detects the boot of the device, it will put the device into diagnostic mode. 8. Once started, the Audio In LED on the front panel will begin to flash. This indicates that the test is running. 9. Once completed, the Audio In LED will stay Green to indicate that the test is completed. 10. The test result will be displayed by the Audio Out LED. If the Audio Out LED is Green, this means that all tests have passed. If the Audio Out LED is Red, this means that some tests have failed. 11. Reboot the device normally and the test results can be retrieved from the Xilica Designer software. Important: Once the test has started, please wait until the whole test has completed. ( Audio Out LED is either Green or Red). If the test is disrupted (i.e power Off during test), this may cause corruption of the firmware and you may need to perform a USB firmware recovery to the device. Once the test is completed, whether it has failed or passed, a test report will be stored into the device. If you restart the device, the Xilica Designer software will detect the diagnostic report from the device and provide a button for you to download the diagnostic report. You can go into the top Device setup tab dialogue to retrieve the report. 9
