4 2 FD-AAZ-0914-BT2 Bluetooth module This add-on board (FD-AAZ-0914-BT2) allows AAZ-0914 SWR Analyzer to connect a portable Android terminal or a Windows Laptop via a Bluetooth link instead of the USB port. The Bluetooth Module can be powered from AAZ-0914A and it is automatically recognized by the firmware that disables the USB port and activates the Bluetooth communication channel. While using Bluetooth function, it is assumed that the USB power is not available and external power will be required to power AAZ-0914A and BT module. This is achieved by providing Battery Connection on this board. DC 6 to 12V may be applied to power AAZ and BT module. 6 2.1 Testing the Bluetooth Adapter A loop-back test is used to verify that the Bluetooth module is working correctly. This test connects the BT Adapter transmit pin to its receive pin, so that the terminal software sees an echo of every character that is sent. The test requires a laptop or a desktop with a BT or using a USB BT adapter, or Smart phone or tablet using terminal emulation software. 1. On the FoxDelta BT adapter AAZ-0914A-BT2 a header labeled LB is available for this test. Short the header. 2. Connect and pair the BT Adapter to your PC/Smartphone using the 4-digit code specific for the BT module version. The most common code is 1234 for pairing code and HC-05 or HC- 06 for ID modules. However, refer to datasheet of the module that is used. Loop test jumper Desktop / Laptop Run a terminal program and connect the virtual port created by the BT pairing process. Windows XP users can run HyperTerminal, Windows 7 users can choose any one of the many dumb terminal programs available from the web. Parameters to initialize the COM port are: Baud, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop (9600-8N1) When the BT Device connects, verify that all the characters you key on the terminal program are echoed back by the BT Adapter. 7 2.1.2 Smartphone / Tablet Run any Bluetooth terminal application. Google Play, Amazon Store and similar websites offer many free Terminal Emulator for Bluetooth Apps. A good choice is Bluetooth Terminal it s simple and easy to install and use. Connect the BT Adapter and verify that all the characters you enter from the terminal keyboard are transmitted and echoed back on the Android device s screen. Notice that all characters are shown twice i.e. echoed. The first character is what is sent form the terminal keyboard and the second is the BT echoed character. 8 2.2 Bluetooth port on PC If a laptop/netbook is used, usually these devices have an already integrated Bluetooth port, so no further action is required, go to next paragraph. For a desktop or an old laptop without BT port, an additional USB Bluetooth adapter (dongle key) works fine. The very old Digicom Palladio USB adapter, used to test the project, is an example of this kind of devices. Download drivers from the producer web site, plugin the dongle key into a USB port, wait until Windows install it: A new BT icon is added and port is ready to work. 10 2.2.1 Initialize the PC SWRA+BT communication Connect the Bluetooth adapter to the SWRA unit, power ON the board and, if not yet done, pair it to the PC Bluetooth port: SWRA Optional Add-On v1.00 by Tony, i2tzk Page. 10

12 2.2.2 Identify the COM port associated to SWRA+BT Take a note of the port number COM30 in this example SWRA Optional Add-On v1.00 by Tony, i2tzk Page. 12

13 2.2.3 Configure SWR Analyzer.exe program Power on the SWRA+BT and launch SWR Analyzer.exe. You should get the SWRA unit not found warning message because now the SWRA+BT is connected to the Bluetooth adapter not to the PC USB port. Click Continue and navigate to SetUp/Comm, select BT0 driver Selected driver is USB HID Select BT0 If the COM port associated to SWRA+BT is properly listed (COM30 in the example) next start SWRA+BT will be automatically detected, recognized and linked. 14 Starting, SWR Analyzer.exe searches the port list and detects the SWRA+BT, it memorizes the port number so next time it will be able to direct access to the port without exploring again the list. SWRA Optional Add-On v1.00 by Tony, i2tzk Page. 14

15 2.2.4 PC troubleshooting - A. It could happen that removing from the PC and plug-in again the PC USB BT Adapter (dongle key) or just moving it to a different USB port, Windows loses the link or changes the associated COM port number. This is caused by the enumeration process executed by Windows to discover the available USB ports and, in our case, this could impact over the COM port number associated to the SWR BT Adapter and already memorized by the program. Try to fix removing the device and pairing it again. SWR Analyzer.exe restarting won t find anymore the SWRA unit and it will search the port list for the new SWRA COM port number. 16 2.2.5 PC troubleshooting - B. If for any reason the COM port associated to the SWRA+BT board is not listed or the port name is affected by spurious / unreadable characters check the field Force to Connect and enter the correct port name (COM8 in the example) on the next field. 18 3 GLCD for stand-alone operations This small breakout board kit is needed if you want to analyze the antenna without using the PC, the GCPU unit displays the resonance curve on a Graphic Stand-Alone LCD.
