2 General description The C32CPU board is a low-cost embedded DSP-system from the micro-line xxcpu product family of modern and powerful DSP boards from ORSYS. For the user, DSP technology has many similarities to conventional standard micro-controllers or micro-processors. However, the internal structure of a DSP has been optimized to provide considerably greater computing power including an arithmetic hardware unit, internal multiple busses and parallel processing resources. It is for instance possible to multiply, add and to perform several data transfer operations in a single clock cycle. The practical and numerical computing power of the C32CPU exceeds that of customary microcontroller by a factor of between 10 and 100. Therefore, it is greatly suitable for calculationintensive and bit-manipulating real-time applications as control engineering, device control, and other controlling tasks. The low power consumption and the power down modes makes a battery operation of the module possible. Working with micro-line systems is virtually problem-free due to several pin- and software compatible processor modules with graded price and performance categories which are available in combination with extensive system software and universal peripheral components. Systems with up to seven boards can be built up without any problems because large external bus-loads will be managed by onboard line drivers for data-, address and several control lines. In the end a powerful application product will be developed in a short time at low development costs and a minimum overall development risk. 3 C32CPU Hardware description. Processor The C32CPU operates with the Texas Instruments 32 bit floating-point DSP TMS320C32. This is in particular characterized by low costs combined with a high MFLOPS (million floating point operations per second) performance which offers the user an exceptional price / performance ratio. The processor's multiplier operates with an accuracy of 40 bit (floating point) or 2 x 24 bit with 32 bit results (integer). The ALU accuracy is 40 bit (floating point) or 32 bit (integer). The CPU core has furthermore a 32 bit barrel shifter and two independent address calculation units for parallel commands with several operands. The address width is 24 bit and enables a maximum memory size of 16 Mwords. The available CPU clock speeds are 40, 50 or 60 MHz. In addition to the processor's internal 0.5 Kwords RAM, there is also an external static RAM with either 32 Kwords (128 Kbytes) or 128 Kwords (512 Kbytes) or 512 Kwords (2 Mbytes) for program and data storage purposes. This memory can be buffered by the internal 64 words program cache memory of the TMS320C32. The external memory is available in two versions for optimizations in speed or power consumption. The size of the external Flash-EPROM is either 128 Kbytes or 512 Kbytes. Thanks to the use of modern and powerful PLD (programmable logic device) the C32CPU provides besides the integrated interfaces in the TMS320C32 processor a number of other powerful user interfaces. Synchronous serial interface The integrated synchronous serial interface in the processor enables serial transfer rates up to 15 Mbit/s and can be used to connect two processor modules in series or to connect different, serial peripheral devices (e.g. A/D- or D/A-converter) to the processor module. I/O Ports The seven integrated I/O (Input / Output) ports are particularly useful. With them, it is possible to simultaneously connect up to seven different customary peripheral devices (e.g. parallel port devices, serial port devices, timers, displays etc.) directly to the module, without additional expense. Timing differences between the fast signal processor and the in general slower peripheral components can be adjusted by software through the programmable wait-state generator. DMA controller The two processor internal DMA controllers enable data transfer rates up to 60 Mbyte/s. They can be used for data transfers via different memory areas or via any periphery or I/O interfaces. Timer The processor has two timers which can be used to measure time or to generate pulsed signals. The according hardware signals are available at the micro-line bus. Watchdog The on-board watchdog ensures that a system reset will be triggered in case of a system malfunction or the power supply voltage of the system drops. Emulator interface The module has a plug-in connector for a TI-XDS510M or compatible emulator adapter. In order to activate the on-chip emulator, the socket on the emulator adapter has to be plugged into the 12-pin MPSD emulator plug on the module. ORSYS Orth System GmbH

6 C32CPU - Software Integrated FLASH-FILE system With the use of the resident FILE system software, which is installed in the Flash-EPROM, up to 63 target user programs can simultaneously be managed by the development PC. The FILE system is not loaded during the normal processor operation. Therefore no memory space is occupied and no interrupt vectors are required. Only after a command on the development PC, the FILE-System will be loaded and the appropriate command performed. Afterwards the active user-program will be reactivated. Through this procedure memory or interrupt collisions with the user program will be avoided. The following commands helps the user to download and auto-start user-programs very easily: Name DIRML DELML RENML FORMATML CHKDSKML RUNML FLOAD3x SLOAD3x Description The command DIRML lists the current directory of the C32CPU-module on the development-pc with name, date, time and file-size of the maximum 63 FILES. Additionally the automatically booting user program and the remaining Flash- EPROM-memory space will be shown. The command (Delete) DELML <Name> deletes the given FILE on the C32CPUmodule. The memory space on the Flash-EPROM of the module, freed by deleting, is automatically made available for other FILES. The command (Rename) RENML <OldName><NewName> changes the name on the C32CPU-module from (OldName) to (NewName). The maximum length of a FILE-name is limited to 15 characters. The command FORMATML formats the Flash-EPROM on the C32CPU-module. All user programs will be deleted. The command (Check-disk) CHKDSKML checks each FILE on the Flash-EPROM of the C32CPU-module. The result of the test, the number of FILES, the overall memory size and the amount of free memory-space of the Flash-EPROM is displayed on the screen of the development-pc. The command RUNML <Name> makes the given program to the auto-booting program and starts it on the C32CPU-module. After each new start or reset of the module, the given program is booted automatically. The command (Flash Load) FLOAD3x is a loading program, which loads a user program via a RS232-port into the C32CPU-module. The user-program will be permanently stored as FILE with program-name, date, time and program-size on the module. After loading the program will be declared as an automatically booting program and started. After each new start or reset of the module it will be automatically booted again. To start the loading process, the command FLOAD3x <Name> has to be entered on the development-pc. The command (Speed Load) SLOAD3x is a loading program, which loads a user program via the RS232-port into the RAM of the C32CPU-module. To start the loading process, the command SLOAD3x <Name> has to be entered on the development-pc. The user program will be loaded and started. When the C32CPU is powered off or reset, the user program, loaded with SLOAD3x, will be lost on the C32CPU-module. Booting The auto-booting user program from the Flash-EPROM will be automatically loaded and started after the module is switched on. It is determined by the last loaded user program or by the command "RUNML". Alternatively the module can also be booted via the synchronous serial interface. Development software A range of powerful software tools are available to develop user programs. ORSYS provides the TI ANSI C-compiler with assembler and linker as well as GO-DSPs Code-Composer. This can be used for all TI floating point processors. With the help of the TI C-source level emulator XDS510M or corresponding compatible systems, symbolic debugging is ensured by using a summary window technique. Using this, the C-source code, assembler code, memory contents, processor registers, etc. ORSYS Orth System GmbH

7 can be simultaneously displayed on the development PC. Naturally, all conventional debugging functions, such as single step, breakpoints, variables display, etc. are possible. An appropriate debugging system is compatible with all micro-line modules supporting TI-processors and can be used on other TI processors simply by changing the emulator head and the software. Also available, as an alternative to the emulator, is a simulator for simplified code testing on the development PC. STDIO.LIB for micro-line C32CPU One of the most useful daily needs for target-system developers are the well known STDIOcommands like printf or scanf etc. These simple I/O commands transmit and receive data through the micro-line onboard RS232 interface. During the application program runtime, it is possible for the user to obtain real time text- or data- outputs or set important keyboard inputs through an external terminal.
