2 HMI & Industrial PCs April 2013 Market Intelligence Report Executive Summary An electronic surv ey of Control Design readers was conducted in April 2013 in order to identify usage and application trends of HMI & industrial PCs among the industrial machine builders that comprise Control Design s readership. Detailed surv ey results are presented on the pages that follow, with key findings summarized below: The majority of respondents (74.7%) indicated the operator interface hardware installed on their machines was a graphical display with touchscreen, followed by graphical display with key board or other input dev ice (20.7), tex t-based display with integral input key s (3.5%), and discrete panel switches and lights only (1.2). Of those respondents who use graphical display screens the most common size indicated was 6-10 inches (29.4%), followed by inches (25.9%), inches (23.5%) and 4-6 inches (8.2%). Only 2.4 % of respondents use screens less than four inches while 10.6 use screens 21 inches or greater. 72.6% of respondent s operator interface screens do not inc orporate web browser capability. W hen browser capabilities were included, the top main purpose(s) indicated were troubleshooting information (55.9%) and remote access (55.9%); operating data collection (41.7 %), machine schematics (41.2%), and update software remotely (23.5%). The ty pes of dev ices preferred by those respondents who do use handheld/portable deices are as follows: 1. Plug-in-handheld 17.2% 2. Smart phone/tablet 12.6% 3. Remote pager/phone/ notification 8.1% 4. W ireless handheld 5.8% 56.3% of respondents do not use these dev ices. W hen respondents specify a PC the majority (59.3 %) indicated they normally choose ruggedized industrial PCs for all or part of their machine control. 24.4% choose W hite box PCs, while 16.3% choose an embedded PC. 2

3 In terms of importance of these operating characteristics, respondents ranked the aspects as follows: 1. Harsh/dirty env ironment capability (90.7 % ranked as important or v ery important ) 2. Shock/v ibration tolerant (84.2% ranked as important or v ery important ) 3. Enhanced operator temperature range (81.6 % ranked as important or v ery important ) Respondents PC specs include panel mount (59.3 ); solid-state storage (40.7%); a small footprint (39.5%); integrated display with touchscreen (38.3%); low power/low heat CPU (37%); no cooling fans (34/6%) rack mount (24.7%) and integrated display (24.7%) and other (4.9%). 3
