1 AccessionIndex: TCD-SCSS-T Accession Date: 1-Oct-2015 Accession By: Dr.Brian Coghlan Object name: Dolch PAC 486 Portable PC Vintage: c.1989 Synopsis: Very robust luggable PC, complete with extension chassis and alternate I/O chassis, S/N: DCS Description: Dolch Computer Systems Inc first released the Dolch PAC 486 Portable PC in Nov Dolch were the worldwide leader in the rugged portable computer market in the 1990s, serving military and industrial applications. Kontron AG acquired Dolch in 2005 and then sold its rugged mobile product line to Azonix in The unit in this collection is unusual for its optional chasses: an extension chassis that provides additional I/O slots, and an alternate I/O chassis that provides different I/O devices. The use of either (or both) required significant disassembly and reassembly, but offered notably enhanced flexibility in that era. A padded carrying case enhanced portability (if one was strong enough). The total cost was St 7907 in The keyboard folded down from the front, and exposed a Hitachi VGA TFT colour LCD display. Front legs unfold from beneath to tilt the unit upwards for better display visibility. I/O devices like floppy disk drives were on one side, and I/O adapters like Ethernet were on the other. There was a 240MB hard disk, and a 250W power supply. The motherboard originally had a 33MHz Intel i80486dx CPU, but was retrofitted with a 33MHz Intel i80486-dx40dpr100 Overdrive double-clocked 66MHz CPU. The motherboard included a socket for a Weitek FPU, 128kB of cache and 4MB of 70nS DRAM with, and eight EISA I/O slots (two inaccessible under the power supply). For a portable PC at that time, performance was very good. Despite the EISA bus, only ISA I/O adapters were fitted. The main chassis included a multi-i/o adapter and a VGA adapter, while the extension chassis included a SCSI adapter, a modem adapter and a 10Mbps Ethernet adapter. The standard I/O chassis had a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive, whereas the alternate I/O chassis had a dual inch/3.5-inch Floppy disk drive plus a QIC-80 tape drive. This unit was used in the early 1990s by TCD Dept.Computer Science s Computer Architecture Research Group for hardware debugging of EISA I/O boards for the Stable Disk, see elsewhere in this catalog. It was then used in the late 1990s for hardware debugging of EISA I/O boards for the SCI Tracer, again see elsewhere in this catalog. In that era it was considered very portable and was lugged to Australia and back several times.
