2 Today s Objectives We will discuss ways to effectively and efficiently utilize ipads. Share apps that address management, organization, utility, professional, and personal needs. Identify resources that will support continuous learning and extension of ipad use in the classroom and for administrative use.

3 A Brief History of the ipad Does anyone really want one? "Is there room for a third category of device in the world, something that s between a laptop and a smartphone? - Steve Jobs asked before he introduced the world to the ipad early in Steve Jobs and Apple were right to be initially cautious with the ipad, as Microsoft and rivals had little success with the Tablet PC among average consumers The iphone hit the market before the ipad, but the ipad was conceived first Jobs moved ahead with the iphone after failed a partnership with Motorola on the ROKR, a phone with itunes I Double Dare You OK I ll prove you wrong Hesitant to enter a burgeoning tablet market, Jobs took on the tablet as a challenge by a competing Microsoft engineer who badgered him about their tablet PC which featured a stylus. According to Jobs, he was doing the device all wrong. It had a stylus. As soon as you have a stylus, you re dead.

5 A Brief History of the ipad What s in a Name Initial names for Apple s tablet ran the gamet, from itablet to islate, even Safari Pad Hot off the Assembly Line / Market Penetration In 2010, when the first ipad was released, 3 million were sold in 80 days, and even after being released 3 months into the year, ipad sales comprised 75% of the table PC sales for the year (IMS Research) All ipad 2 s were sold out within the first 24 hours of its release A Post-PC World The ipad could be Apple s most important device The ipad is more important to Apple than any other device, and not because it s their biggest money-maker it isn t (although I bet it will be soon). Rather, it epitomizes Apple s rekindled emphasis on innovation, blazing a trail in a market of its own creation and, almost singlehandedly, fueling the post-pc movement. TechBlock Despite its popularity, the ipad may not necessarily replace PCs, but the question remains: will it become a device that the masses can depend on for productivity and rich content creation, or will it merely stay on course to emerge as the leader of mobile content consumption?

8 ipad Usage in Education Apple promotes the ipad as an educational tool that engages students, making faculty tools and student textbooks more accessible As of January 2012, more than 1.5 million ipads were in use for education, leveraging more than 20,000 education applications An Educator s Thoughts on ipad Use In Education: "Students' interaction with the device was more personal. You could tell students were more engaged. Using the ipad was more normal, more understandable for them." Coleman Kells, principal of Amelia Earhart Middle School. Study #1: ipad Improves Students Comprehension Apple partnered with textbook publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt on a pilot study using an ipad text for Algebra 1 courses The study, conducted at Riverside, California middle school form Spring 2010-Spring 2011, found that 20% more students i.e. 78% vs. 59% scored Proficient or Advanced in subject comprehension when using tablets rather than paper textbook counterparts

9 ipad Usage in Education Study #2: ipad Can Help With Fundamental Math Skills Motion Math, an ipad game, was used with fifth graders who regularly played the game for 20 minutes per day over a 5 day period Students were shown to have increased test scores by 15% on average ios and ibooks ibooks is the reading application for Apple s ios platform for mobile devices ibooks 2, the latest version, has updated textbook features such as highlighting and annotating text by swiping or taping words to define them ipads display full-color, interactive multimedia content, thus audio, video, and 3-D diagrams that can be touched, rotated and explored ibooks also enables turning notes, highlights and annotations into an interface resembling browsable index cards Some donation orgs exist to help with offsetting the cost of ipads used for education: ex: DonorsChoose.org, SA500 Kids program

10 ipad Usage in Education Textbooks in ibookstore "Traditional large textbooks can be viewed as daunting; with ereaders or the ipad information can be presented in and consumed in smaller, more manageable chunks Education Publishing leaders such as Pearson, McGraw-Hill and Hougton Mifflin Harcourt all offer books in the ibookstore s Textbooks section Cost Effective: high school textbooks are selling for $14.99 or less and give students access to continued updates from digital editions itunes U A full-fledged learning management app for ios where teachers can post materials from syllabi to assignments, blog entries and updates, and other needs for communicating with students It s newer to the market and rivals the education management industry standard, BlackBoard Cost / Donations Even with manageable per e-book costs, ipads are still investments in the range of $500+ per tablet Some donation orgs exist to help with offsetting the cost of ipads used for education: ex: DonorsChoose.org, SA500 Kids program
