10 Use Cases - Restricted Discovery Restricted discovery describes a basic scenario for ProSe discovery. Mary and John are friends John s ProSe-enabled UE Proximity it Mary s ProSe-enabled UE Mary and Susan are not friends Susan s ProSe-enabled UE 10

11 Use Case - Open Discovery Open discovery describes a case in which an UE discover another UE without permission by the discoverable UE. Advertisement Interactive discovery Digital Signage 11

13 Use Case - Offloading Offload much traffic load to the locally shared communication, such as wifi, femto, even proximity based direct communication. Interworking with unlicensed band provides operators a costless service. 13

14 Use Case Public Safety In the United States, LTE has been selected by the FCC as the technology for the Public Safety Network. In Europe there is an ongoing discussion on spectrum to be chosen for broadband Public Safety held by CEPT ECC WG FM PT 49. Mission Critical Voice is the priority Device-to-Device calling 3GPP RAN Rel-12 will study options for device-to-device communication and device discovery Talk Group / Push-To-Talk Calling 3GPP SA GCSEL will study options for group and PTT communication in Rel-1 14

20 3GPP Standardization (3GPP SA1) SA1 Proximity-based Service (ProSe) WID First meeting in Nov Estimated completion in March 2013 Objective : Study use cases and identify potential requirements for an operator network controlled discovery and communications between devices that are in proximity. The scope includes the following topics Commercial/social use Network offloading Public Safety Integration of current infrastructure services, to assure the consistency of the user experience including reachability and mobility aspects 20

LTE device to device discovery Network-assisted discovery Resource semi-statically allocated by the RAN &time-synced UEs transmit discovery signals within the discovery resources Discovery signals encode information UEs decode everyone else s signals 2. LTE device to device direct communication Separate feature from device to device discovery Devices allowed to communicate directly if/when make sense Shortest path for certain types of local data exchanges Specific use case: public safety 21

24 Standardization (IEEE 802) IEEE Infrastructure Service Discovery (ISD) Study Group First meeting in Jan 2012 Participants: RIM, Motorola Mobility, Huawei, Nokia, Renesas, InterDigital, ETRI, etc. Objective : Address the problem of how a station discovers the availability of services within the network from another station. IEEE Peer Aware Communication (PAC) Task Group First meeting in May 2012 Participants: i t LGE, NICT, InterDigital, it ETRI, Samsung, CUNY, etc. Objective : Defines the PHY and MAC specifications for PAC optimized for peer to peer and infrastructureless communications with fully distributed coordination. 24

25 Standardization (Wi-Fi Alliance) Wi-Fi Direct (Wi-Fi P2P) Provides Peer-to-Peer connectivity technology Includes Device Discovery, Service Discovery, Group Owner Power Saving, etc Enables use case: wireless display, wireless audio, sync and go, content sharing... Program launched in Q Now, there are product certified. According to ABI, every device will have Wi-Fi Direct in Neighbor Awareness Networking A new task group was formed in 2012 Provide low power discovery for mobile device social networking and D2D discovery Enables use cases: for example, Saturday marketing advertisement, social gaming, social dating, social meeting in conference, etc... Technology focuses include: Low Power Discovery (mobile device), Long range (up to 500meters), and large scale (up to 1000 mobile devices). Wi-Fi Direct Service A new task group was formed in June 2012 Ensure selected services interoperability: File Transfer, DLNA based Media Stream, and Printing Enable 3rd party application development 25

27 Conclusions (1/2) Challenges for beyond 4G ProSe evolutions WLAN and LTE radio integrations, low-power-always-on ProSe discovery, New Carrier Type (NCT) of LTE for direct communication, and non-orthogonal orthogonal radio design for high performance ProSe Public Safety would be the primary driving force for LTE D2D in Rel-12 LTE + WiFi Direct supports ProSe discovery and communication cat o that only requires adaptations at EPC (no RAN impact) to quickly enable ProSe via standardized 3GPP/WLAN interworking solution Possible to be completed in Rel-12 LTE D2D ProSe discovery and communications require fundamental adaptation of the LTE physical layer (PHY) and radio. It will take several years to complete the major change in PHY and radio in standard procedures, and another several years for products to be available in the market 27

28 Conclusions (2/2) III and ITRI have been actively participating in D2D standard (ProSe) creation in 3GPP SA1 since 2012, and will follow up in RAN & SA for Rel-12 and Rel-13 ( ) III and ITRI are working on a joint project on LTE + WiFi Direct prototypes in 2013 covering network, services and applications We are soliciting participating from Taiwan user equipments and chipsets industry (LTE & WiFi) We need to coordinate our efforts between government and industry to develop a leading position ii in D2D market
