2 Motorcycles Management of vehicle s electronics Electronics became a reality also for motorcycles, thus electronic diagnostic is now essential for the repairer. Beside the simple injection control unit, now a motorcycle may be equipped with ABS, dashboard, light control, up to the latest HandsFree, Tpms and Traction control. Moreover, an efficient road test system is a must, when it is not possible to make diagnostics on a vehicle,since it enables to record data when the vehicle is running on the road. The test equipment for electronics must be integrated with the gas analysis function and the electric signal measuring module. Engine Diagnosis The engine was the first mechanical part to be equipped with an electronic control unit from the beginning of the 90 s. From the fi rst blink code systems which signalled with the lamp fl ashing on the dashboard, to the reading of error codes through a serial connector, up to the highly complex electronic diagnosis of a modern engine. Nowadays it is necessary to have an engine diagnosis as complete as possible that enables to: Read and delete error codes Read the technical parameters of the engine which are necessaryfor a correct diagnosis: rpm, temperature, lambda sensors, throttle position, measured air fl ow, injection timing, etc. Display the engine conditions, such as in gear, im mobilizer state, state of clutch lever and brake, pump relays condition, engine relays, etc. Enable parts such as fans, injectors, pump relays, step per motor, exhaust valve, throttle body actuator, etc. Throttle body position and fuel-air mixture adjustment. Starting from Code card. Reset self-adaptive parameters, in the event of mechanical part replacement (for example lambda sensor). ABS diagnosis This system has been recently installed also on motorcycles with ever increasing acceptance. In particular it is useful to: Read and delete error codes Read the technical parameters which are necessary for a correct diagnosis: wheel speed, engine torque, torque re quested by the driver, etc. Display the conditions of pump relays, brake fl uid level, brake levers. Enable the different solenoid valves and the pump motor. Bleed the brakes. PAG.110

3 Motorcycles Management of vehicle s electronics Body Computer /Dashboard Diagnosis Due to the introduction of many electronic control units, the vehicle had to be equipped with a network server for managing the entire system. Easy and Accurate The skilled techinician FIX the fault using the following procedure:s 1- Connect the Diagnostic tool to verify if there are some error into the ECU memory 2- Verify the stream data from the ECU to investigate if the fault memory is consistent 3- Connect the scope or the multimeter at actuator/sensor to validate the problem on sensor, actuator, cable or ECU. If one of this step is missed the operator could change some sensor/actuator that works properly because he has not in depth investigated. Following the great success achieved with Pokayoke philosofy applied in automotive diagnosis since 2007, Tecnomotor is introducing a new technology (EasyFIX) that allows all users to work as skilled people. The operator can use EasyFIX technology in two different ways: - Read the fault code into the ECU memory - Select the component to investigate In both cases once the component is selected, automatically Socio 600 shows in graphical way the stream data coming from the ECU compared with relative electrical signal probed on sensor/actuator. 18 Motorcyles TPMS Sensor management The TPM-02 is a necessary tool for: - Vehicle Check-in/Delivery [Tyre Service]. Vehicle Test feature lets you check sensors for proper operation and batteries upon check-in or delivery. You can save and print (via PC) test reports for your customers. - TPMS Light Check [Malfunction]. 20 Motorcycles Battery management The new TENSO Evolution battery tester integrates all the necessary functions for a correct diagnosis of batteries. For cutting-edge vehicles battery plays a very important role; in fact, during any stop the various on-board electronic control units draw current and for the battery it could be difficult to handle these conditions.
