2 Project Mobile Purpose: Evaluation of, at least five, cell phone/pda PDA/cell phone handheld devices to determine suitability for support staff and, or faculty and student use at the University of Manitoba. There are currently ten units that could be deemed suitable for this pilot project. We may decide to cut devices or add people to the evaluation. During the trial, the expectation is that each user will try as many applications as possible with effort given to identifying possible educational uses as well as simply a device for communicating. Objectives: Usability - Screen size and colour depth - Button function and feel - Battery Cost Functionality - Number of applications supported - Calendar - Voice - Wireless Mail - Wireless Web - Student Calendar - WebCT - Office - Media Audio/Imaging - Upload/Download - Printing - Roaming access Efficiency - Application access - Battery life Page 2 of 8

3 Effectiveness - Was it used? For corporate application, e-learning or games? - ROI are the costs for the units, extra hardware and software, and the expensive wireless services justified? - Syncronization Duration: The trial will preferably last at least 6 months, depending on availability of voice/data/messaging access plans of this duration from MTS and AT&T, the two carriers included in the evaluation. We will meet periodically throughout the 6 months for updates and discussion. The Telecommunications Office will arrange for the procurement of the devices, ancillary hardware and software, and voice/data/messaging access plans. Handheld Wish List Hardware: - Hi-res screen 320x240 minimum 480x320 optimum, portrait or landscape modes preferred. - Flexible power removable, rechargeable battery or external booster. - Flip cover for LCD screen option to the bulkier, heavier cases. - Camera (Built-in or add-on option). - USB 2.0 port (Built-in CF card or cable). - Ergonomic directional touch pad and application buttons with good response and feel. - Stow-away, full-size keyboard option (Fellowes Stowaway or Stowaway XT, Micro Innovations Pocketop/Micro Wireless Link, Belkin Wireless PDA Keyboard). - Weighs less than six ounces. Software Application Support: Synch software on one computer that is compatible across devices (would be nice for testing, but unlikely to find). Handheld Requirements Hardware: - Pocket PC 2002 or 4.1 OS, or later MHz CPU or faster (prefer MHz minimum) MB RAM or more, onboard (prefer 64MB minimum, 128MB recommended). Page 3 of 8

4 - Secure Digital (SD)/MMC supporting SDIO and, or Compact Flash Type II (PCMCIA) slots. - Bluetooth support for wireless HotSyncs, cell phone/modem, Bar Code Reader or GPS connectivity b WiFi support (Built-in or through the SD slot). - CDMA 1xRTT or GSM/GPRS wireless service (MTS or Rogers AT&T). - Speaker. - Stereo headphone jack. - Mic input jack. Software Application Support: - Wireless Voice (Cell or VoIP). - Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. - Corporate Time (for synch through cradle or wireless). - Outlook Calendar, Notes and Address Book. - Wireless . - Wireless Web browsing (special attention to UMinfo and WebCT). - Wireless two-way text messaging. - Paging.
