WIRE CONNECTION 2.1 General Information For security reason, please pay attention to the following points before connecting: 1) To avoid explosion, DO NOTE work in the environment with inflammable and explosive materials and gases. 5
2) Be careful when connecting the voltage testing leads to avoid short circuit and getting shocked. 2.2 Cell DAC connection About Cell DAC Cell DAC is used for data logging of voltage for each cell. Standard Cell DAC could be used for testing battery type of 2V, 6V or 12V. Each DAC has 2 serial ports for connection with DAC serial cables. These 2 ports are labeled with 1 and 2 which are connected with red (#1) and black (#2) connectors of DAC cable. They are for connecting with different series of batteries in a string. For detailed way of connection, please refer to the text below. Fig.2.2.1A Cell DAC Fig B Magnetic bolts for instant Attachment to metal bars or cases NOTE: Besides the standard DAC, PITE also has customized cell DACs as below: 1) For battery type of 1.2V Ni-cd batteries, way of connection is same as that of 2V. One DAC for 12 cells. 2) For battery type of 12V ONLY (e.g. 380V UPS system), way of connection is same as that of 1.2V and 2V About DAC Serial Cable Please see pictures below for further illustration of data acquisition leads: Fig 2.2.2A 7-lead, 1 black and 6 red For testing 2V batteries One cable is connected with 6 cells One DAC is connected with 12 cells NOTE: Fig 2.2.2B 3-lead, 1 black and 2 red For testing 6V or 12V One cable is connected with 2 cells Once DAC is connected with 4 cells 6
All PITE 3926C Cell DAC has been programmed in PITE factory to fit relevant serial number. Therefore, for DAC connection with batteries, use them in the order of DAC 1, DAC 2 and so forth Cell DAC Connection with Batteries A. Connections for 3-lead cable will be as below: Make sure that DACs are always connected with battery string beginning from negative pole, no matter the whole string begins from the negative pole or possible pole. This connection is important. Only correct way of connection will enable PC software to display the corresponding battery values. Hereafter, 0 below indicates the black lead which is connected with negative pole of batteries. Every DAC lead is labeled with serial numbers (0, 1, 2 ) below. They have nothing to do with serial numbers marked on the batteries. However, DAC leads should be connected with batteries in sequences of 0, 1, 2 and so forth. NOTE : 1# below indicates serial port labeled with 1 on DAC. 2# means 2 labeled on DAC. This is same to all the other ways of DAC connection described below. Fig A B. Connections for 7-lead cable will be as below: Fig B C. If there is only one DAC and cell numbers are less than what one DAC can measure, we have two situations: 1). If you only need one DAC serial cable for all cells connection, then just use one serial cable (connected with serial port 1#). See examples in Fig C1 and Fig C3. 2). If you need 2 serial cables for cell connection but have spare DAC leads, then connect all of the spare leads (on port 2#) with the last cell. See examples Fig C2 and Fig C4. 7
Fig C1, cell type: 12V Fig C2, cell type: 12V Fig C3, cell type: 4V Fig C4, cell type: 4V D. For more than one DACs (e.g. cell type is 12V), connection is like below: DAC N DAC 2 DAC1 (The last DAC) Fig D E. If there are more than one DAC and with spare leads (the last DAC), connection of the last DAC will be: the last testing lead M# (labeled with highest serial number) will be connected with positive pole of the last (N#) cell; and testing lead (M-1) # will be connected with positive pole of (N-1) # cell, so and so forth until all the spare leads are well connected. Cell type is 12V in the example below: DAC N DAC(N-1) DAC 2 DAC 1 (The last DAC) Fig E DAC is powered by batteries that are connected via different DAC leads. When you see the indicating light on DAC blinks, the DAC gets full power supply then. If you do not see indicating light blinks when connecting the first DAC lead, continue to finish connection with other leads. 8
F. PITE also provides special DAC for testing 12V cell ONLY, one of such DAC could connect with 12 cells. Its wire connection is same as that of 1.2V or 2V. 2.3 String DAC Connection Molding of String DAC is same as Cell DAC. But they use different serial connectors. Cell DAC uses one black and one red serial connector as Fig.2.2.1A Cell DAC (page 6). And the serial port in the case has all connecting pins built in (male connectors). Fig Cell DAC Fig String DAC String DAC uses both serial connectors in white (Fig and Fig 2.3.4). Port 2 in the case with pins built in while Port 1 not (Fig 2.3.2). Fig Connector 1 Fig Connector 2 Important NOTE: All String DACs are designed to fit relevant string voltage. Please DO NOT connect low voltage String DAC with higher string voltage. For example, if string voltage is rated as 48V, please do not connect it with 110V or 220V string for security of the String DAC. For different voltage ranges, we are using different type of power supply for the string DAC. Therefore, the string DAC serial cable is a little different. Please mind the difference listed below: 1) For String 48V and below The voltage measurement lead (serial cable No.2 as picture Fig 2.3.4) can also be used as power supply lead. And in serial cable No. 1, there are only measurement lead for temperature and current clamp. 9
Fig Serial cable No. 1 Fig Serial Cable No. 2 2) For String above 48V Different from above solution, in this series String DAC, there are separate leads in serial cable No. 1 for power supply of String DAC. And serial cable No. 2 is only used for measurement voltage of battery string. NOTE: For protection of the String DAC, please connect the power supply leads with power source (battery) of 12V or 24V. DO NOT connect them with higher voltage. Fig Serial cable No. 1 Fig Serial Cable No. 2 Connection of String DAC with Battery String: 1) Power supply String DAC is also powered by batteries. Please mind the different ways of power supply mentioned above. When it gets full power supply, indicating light will blink. NOTE: Both low volt and high volt power supply will not make it work. There is high voltage protection model built in the case. However, for the safety of personnel and the device, you d better not connect the power supply with higher voltage than required. 2) Current testing Current sensor is customer-tailored to fit relevant battery capacity. It could be connected with any battery connecting strap/bar between cells. If sizes of connecting bars are too big to connect current sensor, you could connect it with outlet or let busbar of the battery string. The direction in the blue circle should be same as that of the current direction in the battery string, when the battery system is working. 10
Fig ) Temperature measurement Temperature sensor is for testing ambient temperature. You could leave it alone or attach it to any target (e.g. certain battery) nearby for testing its temperature. 4) String voltage String connectors (Fig and Fig 2.3.7, with clips) are connected with two posts of battery string to testing string voltage (overall voltage), red connector with positive post while black connector with negative. NOTE: String DAC is made in PITE s factory to fit relevant battery string with certain nominal voltage (e.g. 110V, 220V and so on). For security reason, please do not attempt to connect voltage testing lead with strings that are higher than its nominal voltage. For example, if your string DAC is built to test nominal voltage of 48V, do not connect it with string of 220V. 3.
