3 Poll Everywhere Classroom Polling App Live interactive classroom participation Polls can be delivered via website or PowerPoint presentation Students respond via cell phone (texting or website), or tablet/computer (website) no registration necessary Polls can be set to Anonymous. Be careful: once a poll has been set to Anonymous, you can t change it back. As long as students don t register, then you won t be able to trace their results regardless of whether a poll is set to Anonymous or not. When you view the results in your moderator account, it simply shows as received via text or website (no phone numbers or IP addresses are collected) The Higher-Ed Free account can accept up to 40 responses per poll

4 AirServer Mirror tablet or phone on PC Alternative to AppleTV Works with iphone, ipad, Android devices, Surface, Chromebook, etc. Transforms a computer (or Xbox one) into a mirroring receiver using AirPlay, Google Cast, or Miracast Mirroring receiver means the computer will display (mirror) whatever is being displayed on the ipad, Surface, etc. Devices can be connected wirelessly (if on the same wireless network) On the ipad: you need the AirServer Connect app to scan the QR code Recording options: LiveStream to YouTube (saves in your YouTube Video Manager for later viewing) You can also record sessions to a local file BUT currently only Macs can record audio

5 YouTube Video server YouTube is a Google product, so if you have a Google account (like Gmail), then you have a YouTube account by default (same login). Seamless integration into Doceri (ipad) and Snagit (PC). Even 1 hour long videos will upload in about 2 minutes. Camtasia Studio also uploads directly to YouTube, but it takes VERY long (about twice as long to render/upload as the length of the video). The Closed Captioning in YouTube is far superior to Camtasia Studio or Relay. The college is looking into getting a new streaming server platform to replace Relay, so there is a possibility that we could have access to something better in the next year or two.

6 DropBox, Google Drive, and OneDrive So you can stop ing files to yourself! Files are stored on remote cloud-based servers. All are accessible through a web app, desktop app, and mobile app, so you can literally access your files from anywhere. Once saved, changes made on one device will be visible when opening on a different device. Files and/or folders can be shared with other people. You decide whether you want others to be able to View-only or Edit the files. Each of us has a OneDrive account through Office365 (which houses our work ). If you have a Google account, then you have access to Google Drive. This website has a great comparison of the three:

7 OneNote Inking app for ipad & Surface Digital Inking app that is part of the Office365 Suite Sharing notebooks (with students, colleagues, etc.) is very easy Can ink on blank pages or imported PDFs Add text boxes, images, URLs, etc. Easily backs up to OneDrive Downsides: Considers a multiple-page PDF to be a single OneNote Page, so if you want to share a page of a PDF, it will actually share the entire PDF document Saved inked files have larger file sizes than the same inked files in GoodNotes Upside: Class Notebooks you can send assignments to students, and they can submit assignments to you Super fun pen colors

9 GoodNotes Inking app for ipad Use for: In-class lectures (with ipad connected to classroom computer using AirServer or AppleTV) Test Keys Homework help You can write on a blank template or an imported PDF Add text boxes or images Highly customizable pen colors and widths Export (or ) single pages or all pages of a notebook as a PDF or image Auto-Backup to cloud storage (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box) Keeps PDFs reasonable file size Ignores finger/hand input when Apple Pencil is linked, so no issues with stray marks

10 Doceri Inking/Recording app for ipad Mostly used for recording, but doesn t have to be. You can choose backgrounds (whiteboard, chalkboard, graph paper, colored paper, etc.) and you can also insert images. You can not import any other types of files (PDF, Word, Powerpoint, etc.) into Doceri. Doceri does not have Palm Rejection built in when using the Apple Pencil, so your fingers/hand can inadvertently move the page or leave stray marks. Doceri can be used in two ways: from my ipad alone or through a computer. When used alone: You can use it as a whiteboard for inking only, then export the inked pages as an image or a PDF. You can record the ipad screen as you ink in Doceri and share video via YouTube. When used through a computer: The ipad will display the computer screen. Note: this is the opposite of what AirServer does.

11 More about Doceri used through a Computer There are two approaches to take when using Doceri through a computer: 1. Write on a SmartPodium or Qomo monitor and Doceri will record what you do/say. This is how I use it. In this video, I write in my PDF notes on the SmartPodium and use TI-SmartView at 7:10. Advantages: Easier to write on the SmartPodium/Qomo than on the ipad. More natural control of the computer using its pen or mouse. Ink annotations can be saved to the Word or PDF documents. Disadvantage: You are stuck in the front of the room unless you switch to overlay mode. 2. Write on the ipad and use it to control the computer. Doceri will record what you do/say. Switch to overlay mode when you want to write on anything that you opened on the PC. This is how Misty and Joe use it. For example, in this video, Joe shows the ebook at the beginning, then writes on the Doceri Whiteboard at 0:16, then writes on a Microsoft Word Handout at 1:00. Advantages: You are free to walk around the room. Can be used in a classroom with no SmartPodium/Qomo. Disadvantage: Not ideal for note pack users, because when using the overlay mode to write on a PDF or Word file, the ink doesn t stick to the file. (It s like laying a transparency over top.)

12 Important Detail about Doceri Doceri can record only itself (i.e. its own whiteboard/blackboard screen) or what is displayed on the computer that it is mirroring. You can NOT use Doceri to record other ipad apps. In other words, you can t use Doceri to record while you work in GoodNotes or any other ipad app. Let s say you were using Doceri through a computer. You could bring up a Word document on the computer, and the Word document will appear on your ipad. You can then ink on top of the Word document in Doceri (on the ipad) it will not stick to the Word document, because you are not actually editing the Word doc (even though it appears that you are). Doceri essentially lays a transparency over the Word doc. Once you break the mirroring connection, it is like lifting the transparency, and the Word document will be in its original form. Doceri s power lies in its ability to record videos of you inking on Doceri s built-in whiteboard or on top of mirrored computer programs. Ink on its own screens will stick, but inking on the Overlay of the computer screen will not.

13 Windows Journal Inking app for Surface Backgrounds can be plain white, ruled, grid, or custom Different page sizes allowed If inking for a video, choose Auto paper size. If inking for a handout (that may be printed), choose Letter paper size (8.5 x11 ). Can insert images and text boxes Ability to customize lots of pen and highlighter colors Journal used to come standard on all Windows-based tablets, but was discontinued in 2016 due to security concerns. 14 Drawboard PDF Inking app for Surface App is not free: $9.99. (But I ve been running the trial version long past the stated 30 days and it hasn t made me pay ) The primary purpose of this app is to annotate (ink on) PDF documents Has features of Acrobat Pro, such as adding text, images, shapes, as well as inserting, deleting, and rotating pages. Optimized for Windows 10, so it is intuitive. For instance, the eraser end of the Surface s pen erases ink. Highly customizable pens and highlighters Video I made about customizing your pens: You can flatten annotations to decrease file size. Beware: once flattened, you can no longer edit your ink. 15 PenAttention Surface app that makes pen tip visible By default, when using the pen on the Surface, it only displays a tiny dot (as opposed to the standard pointer/arrow that shows when using the trackpad). When making videos, we frequently gesture with the pen (like see up here when I did this step? ), but the default dot is nearly impossible to see. PenAttention (created by a math professor in Alaska) is a FREE app that allows you to choose to show a highlighted dot (of customizable radius, color, and opacity) or a pencil or pointer whenever you use the Surface Pen. About PenAttention: Download: Once installed, it will run automatically in your system tray. Important: Click on the icon in your system tray and choose Highlight Settings. Next to Display Scaling Factor, click on Auto-Detect. This will make sure the PenAttention cursor lines up with where you place the pen on the screen. 16 Snagit Image & Video Capture app for Surface You need Version 13.1 or later for Snagit to work properly in Windows 10. Sheryl Daniel will install this I use this app almost every day When used for image capture, Snagit Editor has a multitude of editing options (add arrows, text, highlight, draw, crop, cut out, resize, etc.) When used for video capture: You choose the portion of the screen you want to record. Choose whether you want to record microphone Choose whether you want to record webcam (either front or rear) If you make a mistake during recording, you can cut out portions of the video using Snagit Editor You can save the file as an.mp4 or upload it to YouTube (which is very fast) Can also link to Dropbox and Google Drive

17 How do I Record Classroom Lectures? Write on SmartPodium/Qomo, use Doceri (on ipad) to record the computer screen Write and record in Doceri on ipad Write in GoodNotes (on ipad), use AirServer to Live Stream to YouTube Make a video for a student when I m at home? Depends on your needs To ink on a blank background (possibly pasting screenshots, like of a HW problem): Using the Surface, write in Windows Journal (or OneNote), record with Snagit, and upload to YouTube To ink on a PDF: On the Surface, open and write on the file in Drawboard PDF, record with Snagit, and upload to YouTube You can use the from my ipad alone option in Doceri to ink, record, and upload to YouTube. ios 11: Use the built-in screen recording feature to record short videos as you write in GoodNotes. The videos get stored in your Photos app, and from there you can upload them to YouTube.

18 How do I (continued) Ink a PDF document? ipad: Import it to GoodNotes, save to the cloud or it Surface: Import it to Drawboard PDF, save to wherever (cloud or hard drive or U-drive) Ink a Word document? ipad: Open the document (from your cloud storage or ) using the Microsoft Word app and tap the the Draw tab. Surface: Open the document in Word, click the Review menu, then select Start Inking If you frequently ink in Word, you should add the Start Inking button to your Quick Access Toolbar Click the down arrow next to the Quick Access Toolbar, then choose More Commands Under Choose Commands From dropdown, choose the Review Tab. Select Start Inking then click the Add button and click OK.
