2 Description V6.1 is the foundation of the IBM WebSphere software platform, and a key building block for a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). As the leading J2EE 1.4 and Web services application platform, WebSphere Application Server for z/os, V6.1 delivers a high performance transaction engine that can help you build, run, integrate and manage dynamic, On Demand Business applications. Its new and enhanced features deliver the flexible, open, resilient application infrastructure you need for SOA. Simple, rapid development and deployment WebSphere Application Server provides a set of rapid development and deployment features to help save precious time and resources. Designed to help increase productivity and get you to production fast, new features in WebSphere Application Server V6.1 include: JDK 5.0 innovations, which introduce significant improvements in programmer productivity, application portability, and performance. The industry specification for J2SE 5.0 (and the IBM implementation as Java Development Kit 5.0) provides programming efficiencies through enhancements in annotations, conversions, monitoring, and management. IBM innovations in the Virtual Machine enhance modularity, profiling, debugging, and serviceability, while other key efficiencies are gained through compile and run-time performance optimizations. A new Automation Toolkit, which provides a full-scale Integrated Development Environment for developing and debugging WebSphere management scripts. Delivered within V6.1 of the Application Server Toolkit, they offer features like color-coded source display, command completion, configuration navigation, and syntax checking. A set of common administrative tasks are also represented in the tools, allowing you to drag and drop tasks into the desired location in the script and have the automation command generated automatically at that point. JSF Widget Library, which helps save development time and expense by providing a set of pre-built functions for use within Web user interfaces. Add features like graphs, data-grids and calendar date-pickers quickly, and with minimum effort, to make your Web user interfaces richer. Installation and deployment enhancements, which come from Cell out-of-the-box profiles which allow single-pass creation of a cell environment (deployment manager and federated node) and J2SE 5, which introduces new language features, such as annotations for improved developer productivity. Increased flexibility comes from deployment enhancements, such as install by non-root users and support for the portlet programming model JSR 168, which enables portlet applications to be portable across the WebSphere stack. Tight integration with Rational tools, which provides a rich, easy to use development environment that deploys directly to WebSphere Application Server V6.1. IBM intends to ship a new version of Rational Application Developer in the third quarter of IBM also intends to ship WebSphere Application Server Express V6.1 in the second half of 2006, bundled with a new Rational toolset. (Refer to the Statement of direction section). As a core part of WebSphere Application Server V6.1, IBM will ship an enhanced version of the Application Server Toolkit for developing applications. Application Server Toolkit (AST) enhancements, which provides basic support for the creation of new applications targeting WebSphere Application Server for z/os, V6.1. This includes wizards and tools for creating new Web applications, Web services, portlets, and EJBs, as well as annotation based programming support, new administration tools for the creation and maintenance of wsadmin Jython files, and tools to edit WebSphere-specific bindings and extensions. Not only can you be confident applications and data are secure, you can virtually eliminate lost business opportunities with near-continuous uptime for mission-critical applications. Enhancements in V6.1 include: Ultimate scale and workload prioritization, which is autonomically implemented by harnessing the power of z/os WLM, which is architected into the application server. z/os WLM opens and closes application server regions to perform work, as needed. When demands increase, additional regions are opened to handle the extra volume. When demands decrease, the non-necessary regions are closed. Additionally, WebSphere for z/os integration with z/os WLM enables workload differentiation to provide high priority workloads greater access to resources, in times of resource constraint. Common Criteria Assurance Level 4 certification (following GA) IBM WebSphere Application Server V6.0.2 obtained full certification and V6.1 is designed to maintain that certification and is currently in maintenance mode evaluation. Certification gives you the confidence that products will be effective in delivering security functions, such as identification and authentication, user data protection, and cryptographic support. Common Criteria is a scheme for independent assessment, analysis, and testing of IT products to a set of security requirements, giving you more assurance that products will be effective in satisfying your security objectives. Security out-of-the-box, which includes default security configurations that are now set out-of-the-box for peace-of-mind right from the start. Single sign on support (SPNEGO) is offered for Windows environments, a default user registry is enabled out-of-the-box for better identity management, and by default, a secure service integration bus enforces the use of secure transport protocols. Advanced security support Mainframe security options continue to deliver the highest level of comfort for customers with mission critical data. With support for RACF among other security products,

3 transactions and reuse of mainframe assets are simplified and locked down entirely. A Web services interoperability basic security profile and updates to Web Services Security, which ensure Web services interactions are secure. Rich J2EE implementations IBM implementation of J2SE 5 provides developers with an unparalleled development environment that can increase application programmer productivity, while also improving portability across all JDK 5 platforms, and delivering much faster performance than previous versions. This improved development environment continues to be surrounded by IBM s industry leading J2EE 1.4 compatible runtime environment. JSR 168, which enables interoperability among portlets and portals. By allowing portlets to be accessed like servlets, via a URL, support for the JSR 168 programming model enables you to run portlets without a full portal server. Performance and high availability J2SE Development Kit 5 enables WebSphere Application Server V6.1 to deliver substantial performance improvements, and to continue to drive industry benchmarks. The proxy server has also been integrated for cache off-loading, which improves application performance and scalability. Common Criteria Assurance Level 4 certification, which is designed to give you confidence that products will be effective in delivering security functions, such as identification and authentication, user data protection, and cryptographic support. Extensive communication services WebSphere Application Server V6.1 enables you to increase your return on investment and improve the flexibility of your business by making application services more reusable and accessible to new users, in new ways. New in V6.1 are: Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) servlet support For a new communications experience, SIP servlet support is integrated within WebSphere Application Server V6.1. SIP is being used in IP telephony the next generation telecommunications network instant messaging, and IPTV to allow new and existing applications to interact with, or provide infrastructure for, those environments. With the converged servlet engine, you can easily enable converged HTTP and SIP interactions, providing portlets, HTTP servlets, and SIP servlets. SIP tooling is also provided in the Application Server Toolkit to help you more easily build SIP applications. Powerful Web services WebSphere Application Server V6.1 delivers new Web services standards to help you more securely extend your reach to new environments. The latest enhancements provide better application portability and control, as well as performance improvements, due to faster parsing technology, SOAP/JMS enhancements, and changes to SOAP with Attachments API for Java (SAAJ). Web Services Notification (WS-N) helps standardize the way Web services interact, using notifications or events, and can be thought of as providing a publish/subscribe model for Web services. In addition to helping align Java and non-java environments, it helps form the basis for event driven architectures built using Web services. Web Services Interoperability Basic Security Profile (WS-I BSP) helps standardize the use of Web services security standards and technology in the development of interoperable Web services. Web Services Security (WS-Security) enhancements offer the start of security interoperability between application server vendors, to help ensure more portable applications. Web Services Business Activity (WS-BA) helps standardize the way transactions are rolled back in a multi-phase commit process. It helps eliminate database locks by establishing trust boundaries between enterprises. Applications, as opposed to databases, can control rollbacks, giving customers more direct control of interactions. Web Services Reliable Messaging (WS-RM) (Statement of direction only) provides a generic and open model for ensuring reliable message delivery for Web services. IBM intends to make a fully supported Web Services Reliable Messaging solution available for WebSphere Application Server V6.1 early in (Refer to Statement of direction section.) Service integration technology enhancements WebSphere Application Server V6.1 provides better integration between IBM WebSphere MQ for z/os and the default messaging provider in WebSphere Application Server. The new zaap, available on the IBM System z 990 (z990) and System z 890 (z890) servers, is an attractively priced specialized processing unit that provides a strategic and highly economical z/os Java execution environment for customers seeking to leverage the powerful integration advantages and traditional qualities of service of the System z platform. For more information, refer to Software Announcement , dated April 7, 2004, and Software Announcement , dated April 7, zaaps may enable you to: Simplify and reduce server infrastructures by integrating e-business Java Web applications to mission critical data, for high performance, reliability, availability and security Maximize the value of their System z investment through increased system productivity, reducing the demands and capacity requirements on general purpose processors, which may then be available for reallocation to other System z workloads Lower the overall cost of computing for WebSphere Application Server and other Java technology-based applications (through hardware, software, and maintenance savings) When configured with general purpose processors within logical partitions running z/os, zaaps may help increase general purpose processor productivity, and may contribute to lowering the overall cost of computing for z/os Java technology-based applications. zaaps are designed to operate asynchronously with the general purpose processors to execute Java programming under control of the IBM Java Virtual Machine (JVM). This can help reduce the demands and capacity requirements on general purpose processors, which may then be available for reallocation to other System z workloads. The IBM JVM processing cycles can be executed on the configured zaaps with no anticipated modifications to the Java applications. Execution of the JVM processing cycles on a zaap is a function of the Software Developer s Kit (SDK) for zseries, z/os 1.6, and the Processor Resource/Systems Manager (PR/SM ). The amount of general purpose processor savings will vary based on the amount of Java application code executed by zaaps. This is dependent upon the amount of Java cycles used by the relevant applications and on the zaapexecution mode selected by the customer. Execution of the Java applications on zaaps, within the same z/os SMP LPAR as their associated database subsystems, can also help simplify the server infrastructures and improve operational efficiencies. For example, use of zaaps could reduce the number of TCP/IP programming stacks, firewalls, and physical interconnections (and their associated processing) that might otherwise be required when the application servers, and their database servers, are deployed on separate physical server platforms. IBM does not impose software charges on zaap capacity. Additional IBM software charges will apply when additional general purpose CP capacity is used. Customers are encouraged to contact their specific ISVs/USVs directly to determine if their charges will be affected. Statement of direction IBM is targeting to make the following components and configurations of WebSphere Application Server V6.1 and related tools available within the next twelve months: IBM Rational Application Developer and Rational Software Architect are IBM tools that can help you design and develop applications for WebSphere Application Server. As standard, all WebSphere Application Server configurations ship the Application Server Toolkit, which is primarily used for assembling and deploying applications to WebSphere Application Server. The Application Server Toolkit contains a sub-set of Rational Application Developer/Rational Software Architect functionality, since it is based on Eclipse and the Eclipse Web Tools Project. In 2006, both WebSphere and Rational plan to release major updates that are designed to be compatible with one another. WebSphere Application Server V6.1 is announced here. Rational is currently planning to ship Rational Application Developer and Rational Software Architect V7.0 in the second half of The gap between these product releases is intentional and is necessary to meet customer requirements for the WebSphere-specific functionality in Rational Application Developer and Rational Software Architect. During the timeframe between the availability of WebSphere Application Server V6.1 and Rational Application Developer V7.0/Rational Software Architect V7.0, WebSphere customers who need to build and deploy applications to WebSphere Application Server V6.1 should use the Application Server Toolkit. Once V7.0 of the Rational products become available, those projects could be imported from the Application Server Toolkit to Rational Application Developer V7.0/Rational Software Architect V7.0 to take advantage of the added capabilities. For a summary of key features in the Application Server Toolkit, refer to the Description section. IBM Web services In addition to the current Web services support in WebSphere Application Server, and the updates announced here with V6.1, IBM

6 currently intends to release an enhanced Web services solution focused on improving consumability of Web services and providing business value in the Reliable Messaging space, focusing on a solution supporting the Reliable Asynchronous Messaging Profile (RAMP). This capability would be provided as a plug-in for customers. As part of this Web services plug-in, IBM plans to release a fully supported Web services Reliable Messaging solution. Reliable Messaging is an important component for Web services. It is designed to deliver the assurance of the completion of message exchanges. Without a Web services standard for providing reliable message delivery, applications currently implement the necessary function in their business logic. This places a burden on developers of business logic, but more importantly can impede interoperability because of inconsistent, differing solutions to a common problem. IBM currently intends to deliver the following items for V6.1 in a post GA timeframe: 64-bit enablement for WebSphere Application Server for z/os A Web server for z/os, powered by Apache for use with WebSphere Application Server for z/os At the time IBM releases this new function, a new z/os announcement will be provided. Product plans referenced in this document may change at any time at IBM s sole discretion, and are not intended to be a commitment to future product or feature availability. All statements regarding IBM future direction or intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice and represent goals and objectives only. IBM System z Application Assist Processors (zaap) zaaps are attractively priced specialized processing units that provide a strategic z/os Java execution environment for customers who desire the powerful integration advantages and traditional qualities of service of the IBM mainframe platform. zaap can help you strategically integrate and run new Java-based Web applications with core z/os business applications and backend database systems, increasing overall system productivity, and ultimately lower the overall cost of computing for running Java technology-based workloads on the platform

9 Conceptually, zaaps are very similar to a System Assist Processor (SAP); they cannot execute an Initial Program Load and can only assist the general purpose Central Processors (CPs) for the execution of Java programming under control of the IBM JVM. However, unlike standard CPs, ICFs, and IFLs, zaaps can do nothing on their own. For this reason, IBM does not impose software charges on zaap capacity. Although not a hard requirement, WebSphere Application Server for z/os, V6.1 offers full support for zaaps. zaaps are designed to operate asynchronously with the general purpose processors when executing Java programming under control of the IBM JVM. The IBM JVM processing cycles can be executed on the configured zaaps with no anticipated modifications to the Java applications. zaaps may be purchased and installed on z9 109, z990 and z890 servers (and follow-on models only). In order to exploit a zaap, the operating system level must be z/os V1.6 (or z/os.e V1.6). zaaps must be jointly configured with general purpose processors within logical partitions running z/os V1.6, or later, and cannot exceed the number of general purpose engines on the machine.
