3 UNIX Part 1 UNIX 1 Supported platforms This ISE TCAD release supports the following platforms: sun4u/sunos5 sun4u/solaris7 hp-pa2/hpux11 hp-pa2/hpux11_32 dec-alpha/osf1_v4 rs6000/aix5.1 ix86/2.2 ix86/winnt Sun UltraSPARC workstations running Solaris 7 or Solaris 8. These are 32-bit binaries. Sun UltraSPARC workstations running Solaris 7 or Solaris 8. These are 64-bit binaries. If your hardware can run 64-bit binaries, these are selected when the option -64bit is applied or if the environment variable ISEBITS is set to 64. In all other cases, the 32-bit sun4u/sunos5 binaries are used. HP PA-RISC 2.0 processors running HP UNIX HP-UX 11.11i. These are 64-bit binaries. HP PA-RISC 2.0 processors running HP UNIX HP-UX 11.11i. These are 32-bit binaries. Alpha processors running OSF1 version 5.1 and later. IBM RS/6000 running AIX 5.1. These are generally 64-bit binaries. PCs based on Intel Pentium III or compatible processors running Red Hat Linux 7.1 (with the gcc compiler). Other Linux versions and distributions may be compatible with ISE TCAD as well, but have not been tested. Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Earlier Windows versions are not supported for this release of ISE TCAD. See Part 2 on page 6 for a description of the installation procedure for the ix86/winnt platform. 2 Installing ISE TCAD binaries NOTE The ISE TCAD installation directory is referred to by the environment variable ISEROOT. 2.1 Compatibility with previous versions To continue using an earlier ISE TCAD version as well as the new installation, install this release in the same location as the earlier releases (using the same ISEROOT), and use the tool options -rel and -ver to select the tool version. Refer to the ISE TCAD Release Notes for further details on tool options. If you need to save disk space, consider removing the ISE Examples Library of earlier versions before installing the new release. 2.2 Setting file permissions The file permissions of files installed from CD-ROM depend on the value of the file mode creation mask, which can be set with the following UNIX command: umask <umask-value> For example, a <umask-value> of 027 makes all installed files readable, writable, and executable for the owner; readable and executable for the group; and inaccessible to all other users. If <umask-value> is not set correctly at the time of installation, the file permissions must be corrected with the UNIX command chmod after installation. 1

4 UNIX ISE TCAD Release 9.0 Installation and User Setup 2.3 Using NFS To use ISE TCAD software on clients of a server using NFS, ensure that the installation directory is accessible to all clients by an identical path, for example, /home/software/isetcad. 2.4 Installing ISE TCAD ISE TCAD for UNIX is delivered on several CD-ROMs. CD-ROM 1 contains the base installation, and CD-ROMs 2 and 3 contain the binaries for the supported architectures. For each CD-ROM: 1. Insert the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. 2. Mount the CD-ROM at a directory, for example, /cdrom, using Rock Ridge extensions. For information about how to mount an ISO 9660 CD-ROM, consult the operating system documentation. Typical commands are mount /cdrom and mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /cdrom (Linux). NOTE The file names must be all uppercase and must not contain a trailing dot or trailing version numbers. If this is not the case, consult your operating system documentation regarding how to mount a CD- ROM using the Rock Ridge extensions. 3. Start the installation script called INSTALL in the directory where the CD-ROM is mounted, for example, sh /cdrom/install. This script interactively guides you through the installation and provides directions on how to complete the installation. 4. Remove the CD-ROM. 2.5 Adobe Acrobat Reader Adobe Acrobat Reader can be found on the ISE TCAD CD-ROM 3 if it is not already installed on your system. To install, follow the instructions given by the ISE TCAD installation program during the ISE TCAD installation process. Ensure you can access Adobe Acrobat Reader through your path settings before starting ISE TCAD. 2.6 LSF Load Sharing Facilities LSF is a third-party product available from Platform Computing, Inc. ( This product provides additional job scheduling features. 3 Installing licenses 3.1 Requesting the license file When the software installation is completed, fill in the license request form: $ISEROOT/install/LicenseRequestForm.txt and send it as an message to your local ISE office (or license@ise.com for North America and South America, and license@ise.ch for the rest of the world). 2

5 UNIX NOTE The FLEXlm host ID of the ISE TCAD license server is an essential item for the purposes of software licensing. To obtain the FLEXlm host ID, a convenient utility is provided. After the software installation, log in to the license server and use the command: $ISEROOT/bin/lmutil lmhostid NOTE FLEXlm host ID does not equate to hostid on some systems. 3.2 Starting the license manager To install the licenses: 1. Ensure you are user root or another user allowed to start and stop license managers. The user starting the license manager must have write access rights in $ISEROOT/licenses. 2. Terminate all running ISE license manager daemons. 3. Copy the license file provided by ISE Support to $ISEROOT/licenses/license.dat 4. For floating or counted node-locked licenses, start the license manager by running the script $ISEROOT/bin/iselm install The script $ISEROOT/bin/iselm has other options to manage the license manager. To view these, type $ISEROOT/bin/iselm Before starting any ISE TCAD tools, there may be a short waiting time because the port that is used to communicate to the license daemon is not always released immediately. Check the log file of the license manager in $ISEROOT/licenses/lic.LOG if there are any problems. Newer versions of the license manager create a.flexlmrc file in your home directory, pointing to the location of the license and log files. You may want to delete the.flexlmrc file before starting the license manager. 4 System-specific notes 4.1 Run-time environment If error messages about missing or unresolved symbols are displayed when starting an ISE TCAD tool, updating of the system run-time libraries may be required. More information about machine configuration and run-time versions can be found at or Non-English language environment In a non-english language environment, unset the environment variable LANG; otherwise, some applications may not run unless the following command is given: unsetenv LANG or set the environment variable LANG to C with the command: setenv LANG C 3

6 UNIX ISE TCAD Release 9.0 Installation and User Setup 4.3 X servers We recommend 24 bits of color depth for running ISE TCAD. Otherwise poor color rendering or color flashing when moving between windows may occur. This is especially the case when color-hungry applications are started before ISE TCAD tools. Most X servers offer a range of visuals, which can be listed with the command: xdpyinfo If your graphics hardware provides only one visual at a time, refer to the graphics system s documentation for selecting an appropriate visual bit visuals Although this section specifically mentions the common desktop environment (CDE) on Sun workstations, workstations from other vendors may not use the full range of colors of which their graphic hardware is capable. Therefore, the same or similar procedures may apply. Sun workstations running CDE do not usually run in 24-bit TrueColor mode by default. To ensure this mode is used, edit the file: /usr/dt/config/xservers and change the last line from: to: :0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/xsun :0 -nobanner :0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/xsun :0 -dev /dev/fb defdepth 24 -nobanner X servers with backing store Some X servers are configured not to use backing store. This causes menus in some programs to hang, that is, the underlying window is not redrawn when the menu is closed. Backing store can be explicitly switched on. On Alpha machines running Digital UNIX, the configuration is in: /var/x11/xserver.conf To switch on backing store, change the entries: to: -pn -nice -2 -bs -su -pn -nice -2 Remove any -bs options. On Linux with XFree, backing store is often switched off by default. To switch on the backing store option: 1. Add an appropriate line to the /etc/x11/xf86config-4 file. 2. Restart the X11 server. 4

7 UNIX An example with the relevant part is: Section "Device" Identifier "ATI Rage LT PRO" VendorName "Unknown" BoardName "Unknown" Driver "ati" Option "DPMS" Option "backingstore" EndSection 5 User setup 5.1 UNIX environment It is assumed that ISE TCAD is installed. To access binaries: 1. Set the environment variable HOST to the name of the machine on which ISE TCAD will start. On most systems, HOST is set automatically when logging in, but verify this before proceeding. 2. Set the environment variable ISEROOT to the directory where the ISE TCAD software is installed. 3. Add $ISEROOT/bin to the front of the environment variable PATH. This setting ensures architecture- and operating system independent drivers for all ISE TCAD tools are detected at run-time. NOTE ISE TCAD contains some binaries (such as gzip, gunzip, and tclsh) that may already be present on your system. Adding $ISEROOT/bin to the front of your path ensures that the versions compatible with ISE TCAD are used. 5.2 Simulation queues Before using ISE TCAD, a systems administrator must set up the default simulation queues. For GENESISe, the files HostDB ($ISEROOT/tcad/<release>/lib/glib/HostDB) and gqueues.dat ($ISEROOT/tcad/ <release>/lib/glib/gqueues.dat) may have to be set up by a systems administrator. Refer to the GENESISe manual for more information on user-specific scheduler setup and scheduling policies. For setting up LSF and DMW Scheduler queues refer to the GENESISe documentation. 5.3 Manuals All ISE TCAD manuals are accessible online. 8 Windows ISE TCAD Release 9.0 Installation and User Setup Part 2 Windows 6 Supported systems 6.1 Hardware requirements A PC with an Intel Pentium III or compatible CPU. A minimum of 256 MB RAM, although 512 MB RAM or more is recommended. A graphic adapter with support for 24-bit color (16.7 million colors) is recommended. OpenGL support is required. An Ethernet network card is required for obtaining ISE TCAD licenses if the dongle solution is not used. 6.2 Software requirements Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later. NTFS file system for the installation drive. Cygwin from Cygnus Tools. This is supplied on the ISE TCAD CD-ROM, but must be installed separately from the ISE TCAD tools. X Window server. Hummingbird Exceed 7.5 or later is recommended. An evaluation copy can be downloaded from Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free reader for Adobe PDF and is required to read the online ISE TCAD manuals. A copy of the installation for Acrobat Reader is included on the ISE TCAD CD-ROM. 7 Installing ISE TCAD binaries 7.1 Compatibility with previous versions You may want to continue using an earlier ISE TCAD version as well as the new installation. In this case, install this release in the same location as earlier releases (using the same ISEROOT) and use the tool options -rel and -ver to select the required tool version. Refer to the ISE TCAD Release Notes for further details on tool options. If you need to save disk space, consider uninstalling earlier versions before installing the new release. 7.2 Installing ISE TCAD A systems administrator or a user with administrator privileges can install the software. Note that any uninstalling of previous ISE TCAD versions must occur before installing a new release: 1. Insert the CD-ROM labelled Windows in the CD-ROM drive. 2. Start the installation by inserting the ISE TCAD for Windows CD. In case the installation program doesn t autostart, start autorun.exe from the CD-ROM, which guides you through the installation procedure. 6

9 Windows 3. By default, ISE TCAD is installed in C:\ISE_TCAD. A custom installation will however prompt you for an installation directory <install_drive>:\<install_dir>. Select a directory name without spaces. The installation drive (<install_drive>) can be an NTFS local drive or a network drive mounted using a commercial NFS client or exported from a UNIX server via Samba. 4. Check the permissions of the installation directory <install_drive>:\<install_dir> and all its subdirectories. It is recommended to change permissions, using Windows Explorer, to the following: Administrators Full Control (All) (All) Everyone Read (RX) (RX) 5. Select the Replace Permissions on Subdirectories option. 7.3 Uninstalling ISE TCAD If it is necessary to remove ISE TCAD software, the systems administrator should use the uninstaller rather than deleting the ISE files. To uninstall ISE TCAD software: 1. Select Settings from the Start button. 2. Select control panel. 3. Start the add/remove programs from the control panel. 4. Click ISE TCAD 9.0 entry in the Installed Programs list. A button labeled Change/Remove is available. 5. Click the Change/Remove button. The ISE Install/Uninstall program starts. 6. Select the Remove option and proceed through the uninstallation program. 8 Installing required third-party software NOTE Third-party software can be installed on a different drive than the ISE TCAD installation. 1. Install the X Window server according to its instructions. The X Window server should be set up to use TrueColor mode. Ensure that the backing store option is switched on. 2. Install Cygwin for Windows as provided on the ISE TCAD installation CD-ROM. Earlier Cygwin versions will not work with this release of ISE TCAD and must be replaced with the version on the ISE TCAD CD-ROM. When filling in the Cygwin installation wizard: a b c d Select Install from local directory. Select Install for All Users and select Default Text File Type Unix. For the local package directory, type <CD-drive>:\cygwin\cygwin or browse to this directory. From the list of packages to install, click All so that everything lists as Install, then continue. 3. If Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.x or a later version is not already installed on the system, install the Adobe Acrobat Reader provided on the installation CD-ROM. 7

Copy this license file to: <install_drive>:\<install_dir>\licenses\license.dat Licensing of the ISE TCAD for Windows software is performed by one of two methods: Use a local license (MAC address or dongle based). Use a license on a UNIX license server. 9.2 Installing dongle drivers If using a dongle-based license file, change to the directory: <CD-ROM>:\flexid and start the program: flexid.exe The program guides you through the installation of the dongle drivers. 9.3 Starting the license manager ISE TCAD software interacts with the licensing software through a vendor daemon that must be running on the license server when the software is used. If using a windows license server, the systems administrator should configure the daemon to run in the background: 1. Open a command window, and enter the command lmtools. 2. Select the Configuration Using Services option. 3. Click the Configure Services tab. 4. Fill in paths to the lmgrd (same folder as lmtools), license file, and debug log: lmgrd: %ISEROOT%\tcad\<release>\ix86\WinNT\etc\lmgrd.exe 5. Select the Start Server at Power Up and Use Services options. 6. Click Save Service. The next start of the system will start the server automatically. 10 System-specific notes 10.1 Run-time environment For running ISE TCAD applications using UNC paths, use the regedit tool to add the value DisableUNCCheck (of type REG_DWORD) under the registry paths HKEY_CURRENT_USER (HKCU) and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE 8

11 Windows (HKLM) (under Software, Microsoft, Command Processor), and set the value to 0x1 (Hex). Refer to support.microsoft.com, Q for more information X server To prepare for the use of ISE TCAD, start the X Window server. For the Exceed Xterm to work, first set the environment variable DISPLAY to a value of either :0.0 or <hostname>:0.0. NOTE Failure to start the X Window server may cause tools such as MDRAW and DIOS to fail or not to display. 11 User setup 11.1 Windows environment It is recommended that either a systems administrator or a user with administrator privileges performs these steps: 1. Create a directory <install_drive>:\tmp on the drive selected for installation if it does not exist. This directory is vital for the temporary files that many of the applications create. Add read and write permissions for all users. 2. Create a Windows account for each ISE TCAD user. 3. Ensure that the variables ISEROOT and ISERELEASE are correctly set when accessing a shared installation. NOTE Users may have to set the variable ISEDB for some applications to start Simulation queues For GENESISe, the file gqueues.dat (%ISEROOT%\tcad\%ISERELEASE%\lib\glib\gqueues.dat) may have to be set up by the systems administrator.
