Installation at a Glance Installing Ansoft software involves two major steps: Step 1: Installing the software. Step 2: Setting up licensing, which may include installing a license server. The details depend on your licensing arrangement (evaluation versus purchased): Evaluation versions of Ansoft software typically do not require a license server Purchased versions of Ansoft software require the most recent version of the FLEXlm for Ansoft license server. You may also need to use the Ansoft License Utility after installation to further set up license files. Refer to Chapter 5, Setting Up Licensing. For all UNIX installations, the Ansoft license must be locked to a hostid. See Chapter 3, What You Need, for more details. See the flowchart on the next page for a graphical representation of the overall installation process. See Chapter 4, Installing the Ansoft Software on a UNIX Workstation, and Chapter 5, Setting Up Licensing, for detailed steps. Installation at a Glance 2-1

Installation Overview Installation Overview Start Determine hostid of server machine. Obtain license from Ansoft Start the Maxwell Install window: Log in as root Insert and mount the CD Type cdpath/install Accept the license agreement Select operating system and directory Select product(s) to install, and choose Install Verify the selections, and complete the installation Install FLEXlm for Ansoft (if new version) (The license server can be selected at the same time as or after the software installation.) Download OpenGL runtime libraries from HP or Sun website, as necessary Finish 2-2 Installation at a Glance

What You Need Before installing Ansoft software, you need to have five items: The Ansoft product CD An Ansoft license file A license server for non-evaluation licenses and some evaluation licenses A hostid to which to lock the Ansoft software license A computer that meets the minimum system requirements What You Need 3-1

Ansoft Product CD Ansoft Product CD The product CD contains: The Ansoft software product(s) and project examples The FLEXlm for Ansoft license server software Possible third-party software for viewing online documentation (Adobe FrameViewer or Adobe Acrobat Reader) Documentation files License File License Server (Required for All Licenses) You received your license file from Ansoft in an message, either as text within the message or as a file attachment. You can do one of the following: Save the attached file. To avoid data corruption, this option is recommended over copying the text from the message. You may accept the default file name or specify a new one. Copy the text from within the message into a text editor and save it with a.lic extension. If you do not have a license file for the Ansoft software you are about to install, please contact your Ansoft sales representative. See "Obtaining a License File" in Chapter 4 for an explanation of the different types of licenses. (Typically Not Required for Evaluation Licenses) Once you have purchased the software, you must designate a machine on your network to act as a license server. The FLEXlm for Ansoft license server must be installed in one of the following two locations: On the computer where the software will be installed. On another machine accessible over the network. You can install the FLEXlm for Ansoft license server before or after you install the Ansoft software. 3-2 What You Need

Hostid Hostid Each module in the Ansoft product(s) you purchased requires a separate license, and software licenses are contained in one or more.lic files. To receive a.lic file, you need to provide a hostid to your Ansoft sales representative. This hostid allows your sales representative to enable the license file for the software you purchased by locking the license file to this hostid. The hostid must be for the machine that will act as the license server. If you are evaluating the software, you will need the hostid of the machine on which the software will run. Do one of the following to determine the hostid of your license server machine: Enter one of the following commands to return the hostid: On a Sun, enter the following: hostid On an HP, enter the following: uname -i (Either include a # in front of the number, or convert the value to hexadecimal by typing printf %x\\n uname -i ) After you have installed the FLEXlm license daemon, you can run either the FLEXlm lmhostid utility or the FLEXlm lmutil utility. Both of these utilities are installed during the installation. The lmutil utility returns the proper hexadecimal format for the hostid. See the GLOBEtrotter FLEXlm documentation for more information. 3-3 What You Need

System Requirements System Requirements Supported Machines and Operating Systems HP workstation with PA RISC 2.0 architecture running HP-UX 11.0 or higher Sun workstation with UltraSparc processors (V9 architecture) running Solaris 7 or 8 You also need to have the OpenGL runtime libraries installed. See "Downloading OpenGL Runtime Libraries" in Chapter 4 for how to obtain these libraries. For Solaris 7 machines, you need to install the Solaris 2.7 recommended patch cluster, which can be obtained from This patch cluster includes three patches you need for Ansoft software to run on Solaris 7 machines: , , and The entire patch cluster requires approximately 54 MB of disk space. 3-4 What You Need

Installing the Ansoft Software on a UNIX Workstation To install Ansoft software on a UNIX workstation: Obtain a license file. Verify disk space. Set maxdsiz (for HP Machines). Mount the CD-ROM drive. Install the Ansoft software. Download OpenGL runtime libraries. See Chapter 2, Installation at a Glance, for an overview of the entire installation process. Installing the Ansoft Software on a UNIX Workstation 4-1

Obtaining a License File Obtaining a License File Ansoft provides two types of licensing: counted and uncounted. Counted licenses require the FLEXlm for Ansoft license server, while uncounted licenses do not. When you evaluate software, you receive an evaluation license file from Ansoft that may contain counted or uncounted licenses. When you purchase software, you receive a standard counted license. Therefore, some evaluation licenses and all purchased licenses require you to install the FLEXlm for Ansoft license server. To receive the license file from Ansoft, you will need to provide your Ansoft sales representative with the hostid of the machine where your FLEXlm for Ansoft license server is or will be installed. See "Hostid" in Chapter 3 for how to determine your hostid and "License File" in Chapter 3 for more information on license files. Verifying that Enough Disk Space is Available The amount of disk space required by the Ansoft software depends on which packages you are installing. Refer to the hardware requirements for each package you have purchased for more details. The install program tells you if it can copy the files, but you should also make certain you can run the Ansoft software with no difficulty. You need sufficient disk space in the following directories: The directory where the software is installed The directory where you will be saving project and solution files Open a command window to check the amount of disk space available in both of these locations, and then use the same command window to install the software. To display the amount of free space on the hard disk, type the following in each directory you want to check: df -k. for Solaris and HP workstations. bdf. for HP workstations. The system displays the amount of free space on the hard disk. If there is not enough space available, clear enough space on the disk (by deleting, moving, or compressing files) before proceeding with the installation. Note: On every machine where you are going to run the software, you also need enough swap space to accommodate 2 to 3 times your amount of RAM. Contact your system administrator if you have questions about swap space. 4-2 Installing the Ansoft Software on a UNIX Workstation

Setting maxdsiz (for HP Machines) Setting maxdsiz (for HP Machines) On HPs, in addition to making sure enough memory is available, you also need to make sure the software has access to that memory. To set the HP memory values, set maxdsiz (which specifies how much memory a process can allocate) to the amount of swap space available on your machine. If you are unsure how to set these variables, refer to the HP documentation, or ask your system administrator. For setting memory preferences for the new direct solver, see "Direct Solver Preferences" in Chapter 3 of the Ansoft System Administration Guide for UNIX, which can be found in the following two locations: On the Ansoft website at On the product CD in the the /documentation directory (in PDF and PS form). 16 Mounting the CD-ROM Drive Mounting the CD-ROM Drive Note: You must mount your CD-ROM drive to access the CD. (Typically, your CD-ROM drive will already be mounted, and you can skip this step. Check with your system administrator if you are unsure.) Both the commands and path names to your CD-ROM drive will vary according to how you have your system set up; the table below lists examples. If your system is set up differently, ask your system administrator how to mount the CD-ROM drive. To mount your local CD-ROM drive: 1. If necessary, create a directory to use as the CD-ROM drive mount point. Go to the directory where you want to mount the CD-ROM drive, and create the new directory: cd path mkdir /CDROM (where path is the path of the CD-ROM drive, generally /dev/rz4c). It is necessary to create the /CDROM directory for an HP workstation. 2. Insert the CD, and mount the CD-ROM file system using one of the following commands: Solaris HP Note: Use AutoMount. (Solaris automatically mounts the CD when you insert it in the CD-ROM drive, typically at /cdrom/cdrom0.) /usr/sbin/pfs_mountd & /usr/sbin/pfsd & /usr/sbin/pfs_mount -t rrip -o xlat=unix /path/cdrom /usr/sbin must be in your path, even though you are entering these commands explicitly. (where path is the device name, often /dev/dsk/c0t<n>d0, with <n> as the SCSI address of the CD-ROM drive). To determine the specific device name, enter the following command as root (on all one line): Note: /sbin/ioscan -fn /usr/bin/awk ($1== disk ){print $0; getline; print $0} To unmount the CD, type: /usr/sbin/pfs_umount /cdrom 4-4 Installing the Ansoft Software on a UNIX Workstation

Setting Up Licensing Each module in the Ansoft product(s) you purchased requires a separate license. Software licenses are contained in one or more.lic files. To receive a.lic file, you must provide a hostid to your Ansoft sales representative. See "License File" in Chapter 3, "Hostid" in Chapter 3, and "Obtaining a License File" in Chapter 4 for more details. Setting up licensing involves three parts: Installing the FLEXlm for Ansoft license server if you do not already have the most recent version installed. Specifying the license file(s) during the FLEXlm for Ansoft installation. Optionally, you may also need to update license files or other server settings, using the Ansoft License Utility. This utility is installed as a part of the FLEXlm for Ansoft license server installation. Setting Up Licensing 5-1

Installing the License Server Installing the License Server For standard non-evaluation (that is, purchased) licenses, the FLEXlm for Ansoft license daemon must be installed either on a server or on the machine where the Ansoft software is installed. The FLEXlm for Ansoft license server must also be accessible from any computers that are running Ansoft software. Even if you are running the software stand-alone on a workstation, the FLEXlm for Ansoft license server still must be installed; in this case, select your workstation as the license server. Some products, such as student versions of Ansoft products or third-party products such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, may not require a license file or a FLEXlm license server. The software installation program skips the licensing steps for these products. The FLEXlm for Ansoft license server installation setup installs the following two components: GLOBEtrotter s FLEXlm for Ansoft license server Ansoft s License Utility After installing the Ansoft software, if you had selected FLEXlm License Manager v7.2h in the Maxwell Install window at the same time you installed the Ansoft software, then the installation automatically starts the FLEXlm for Ansoft license server installation. (See Chapter 4, Installing the Ansoft Software on a UNIX Workstation, for more information about installing Ansoft software.) In this case, start with step 5 below. To install the FLEXlm for Ansoft license server: 1. If you closed the Maxwell Install window after the Ansoft software installation, do the following to start the installation program again: a. Make sure you are logged in as root. Check with your system administrator if you have problems logging in as root. b. Do one of the following: Choose Yes to overwrite all files in the installation directory. Choose No to install only missing files and newer versions of older files. The product files are copied to your installation directory, and the Ansoft License Utility window appears. If you are logged in as root, you will need to enter a user name and password. Note: Note: After the product files are copied to your computer, a prompt appears, asking you what group you want the software to use. Press Return to give the group bin ownership of the files, or enter the name of a different group. You do not need to specify a group if you are logged in as no_root. The Ansoft License Utility can be used to: view, add, remove, and rename license files; change the license file directory; or change the FLEXlm server configuration. See "Managing License Files After Installation" in Chapter 5 for more details. At this time in the FLEXlm for Ansoft license manager installation, you must select a license file directory and add at least one license file. The Ansoft License Utility can also be started after installation is complete, by typing /path/licman, where path is the path to your CD-ROM drive. 6. In the Ansoft License Utility, do one of the following to select a directory that contains Ansoft license files: Accept the default in the License Home Directory field. Note: The License Home Directory field displays the location where all license files will be stored. If you change this location, any license files stored in the previous location will not be automatically moved to the new location; you must use the Add File command to find and add them to the Existing License Files list. 5-3 Setting Up Licensing
