1 Page 1 of 11 How to Manage Sections Sections or Topics allow you to organise your activities into discreet parts that aid student navigation, content release and can provide a meaningful sequence for students. Outline: The purpose of this guide is to show users how to manage sections of your LMS site. What will the guide cover? The guide will cover how to add and remove sections, hide and show sections and apply selective release and a section summary. How long will this take? This activity should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. What technology will it use? LMS Materials needed? A device that allows updating LMS content.

3 Page 3 of 11 Adding/Removing sections via subject settings Edit settings You can add and remove sections to your LMS subject via the Edit Settings tab under the Administration menu for your subject. This is recommended where you want to add a large number of section at once. Adjust number of sections Under Subject format settings select the Number of sections you want to display.
4 Page 4 of 11 Adjust number of sections (Continued) Your sections will then appear underneath the subject default section as (1.) collapsed topics or (2) grid boxes depending on the subject format selected.
5 Page 5 of 11 Adding/removing sections via the subject homepage Enable Editing You can add or remove sections via the subject home page. This is recommended where you may want to add or remove single or a small number of sections. 1. On the top right of the page, select Turn editing on Add an activity or resource 1. Scroll down to the last section on the page. 2. Select the plus or minus symbols to add or remove a section NOTE: If you remove a section with content the content will be retained in an Orphaned activity section that will not be visible to students. If you want to delete the content of a section please refer to the instructions on deleting a section in this guide.
6 Page 6 of 11 Deleting sections via the subject homepage Enable Editing You can delete sections via the subject home page. On the top right of the page, select Turn editing on Delete section If you want to remove a section and its contents permanently from the Edit menu at the top right of the section, select Delete section
7 Page 7 of 11 How to Show/Hide Sections Enable Editing You can hide and show entire sections via the subject home page. On the top right of the page, select Turn editing on. Select Hide or show contents From the Edit menu at the top right of each section select Hide section or Show section as applicable. The icon will change from an eye to and eye with a strike through it indicating whether the section is visible or not.
8 Page 8 of 11 Edit a Section to add a summary or selective release Enable Editing You can manage sections via the subject home page to add summary content and restrict access to the section based on grade, group, date or nested restriction set. On the top right of the page, select Turn editing on. Select Edit settings From the Edit menu at the top right of the section select Edit section.
9 Page 9 of 11 Add a summary 1. You can add/change the name of your section under Section name. 2. A summary or contents can be added in the text editor which allows you to format your content similar to a word document. Embed codes for multimedia and widgets can be added by selecting code view icons from the WYSIWYG menu. Restrict Access Restrict access allow you to control access based on date, grade, users and activity completion. Save your settings At the bottom of the page, select Save changes.
10 Page 10 of 11 Orphaned Activities What is an orphaned activity An orphaned activity is created when you remove (but not delete) a section via the subject home page or subject settings. This retains the content from the removed section but hides the section from students. You can make content in orphaned activities available to students by linking to the URL of the activity in the orphaned section from an accessible section if desired.
