1 Turnitin (available in your LHU D2L course shell) Turnitin improves the student writing cycle by preventing plagiarism and providing rich feedback to students. The Turnitin Suite provides the following features and is integrated in the Dropbox feature of Desire2Learn in the Lock Haven course shells. Originality Check- ensures original work by checking submitted papers against leading databases, publications and other student work. GradeMark- saves time and improves feedback through online grading where standard and customized marks appear directly on the student's paper; provide better feedback by quickly dragging standard or custom marks and comments directly on the paper. PeerMark- engages students in the writing process by providing structured, anonymous feedback of other student's written work; it facilitates peer review so that students can evaluate each other's work. Turnitin and Grademark are available through the Dropbox feature in Desire2Learn. The terminology may be slightly different from the previous version, but the features have remained very similar. Creating an Assignment Dropbox enabling the Originality Check feature. Log into D2L and choose the course in which you want to create a homepage. Choose Dropbox from the navigation bar under the Course Elements tab. Then, Select New Folder. Add a name for the dropbox in the space provided. If you would like to use the Check for Originality (Turnitin), or Grademark to digitally markup an assignment, click the Originality Check box (previously Plagiarism Detection). Enabling Originality Checking When you enable originality checking, an options area appears at the bottom of the Edit Folder page. Here you can enable detailed Originality Reports for dropbox submissions and adjust options that control end user visibility and report frequency.

2 Originality Check Options: This will appear only if Originality Check was enabled when the dropbox was created. These features refer to the Turnitin integration. If students report that they cannot see the markup icon, make sure the box allowing users to see Originality Reports is selected. (see above) There are many options available to you (the instructor) when generating originality reports. The following are screen shots of the options.

3 Select Save and Close to complete the dropbox folder creation. You should see that the dropbox folder has been created and an icon (binoculars) appears to the right of the folder name. This indicates that the Originality Check has been enabled for this dropbox. The number of submissions is displayed. Viewing and Assessing Assignments View Originality Reports from the Folder Submissions page. When the Originality Report is ready, the status changes from In-progress to a percentage, indicating the amount of matching content. A lower percentage rating indicates that most of the content is original; a higher percentage rating indicates that much or all of the content matches content found in other sources and may require further investigation. The percentage ranges are associated with colors: Blue: >= 0 and < 20% Green: >= 20 and < 40% Yellow: >= 40 and < 60% Orange: >= 60 and < 80% Red: >= 80 and <= 100% Click the colored section beside the percentage rating to view the associated Originality Report Each student name will be listed and will have their document they have submitted under their name. The originality results appear to the right, however you may have to submit it for originality checking if you enabled originality checking after it was submitted. The following will be displayed until the process is completed.

4 Once the originality report processes, there will be a colored bar which shows the percentage that their paper is similar to another source under the Reports header. You can click on the originality report icon to access TurnitIn. From there, you can switch to grademark to leave feedback. This will bring you to TurnItIn's originality report screen where you can compare student sources. A sample originality report can be viewed below.

5 By clicking on Grademark within Turnitin, you can grade the item or leave any type of feedback that you choose. Using the Grademark enables you to leave comments right on their electronic version of their paper for them to view.
