1 Page 1 of 9 Messaging/ ing students and others through the LMS Within the LMS there are functions that allow you to use messaging to contact students/other lecturers via the LMS so they receive an . There are several ways to use and access messaging. You can use messaging to: /contact an individual student Contact students who have failed to submit an assessment/assignment Contact students who have not logged in to the subject in a particular time frame Contact a group of students either by a predefined group* (e.g. LMS groups) or a user selected group Send a message to all students (e.g. as an announcement, or to encourage students to access the LMS) Message others enrolled in the LMS subject/shell such as tutors or other lecturers. Outline: The purpose of this guide is to show how to message/ students in the LMS via several means for the above purposes. What will the guide cover? The guide will cover how to: Message an individual, all students, or tutors enrolled in the LMS subject using the Participants option, and to filter messaging based on student or lecturer role Message participants who have not accessed the subject for a period of time Message non-submitters for messaging students who need to submit an assignment. *Note: This guide will not cover how to message a group of students based on LMS groups.
2 Page 2 of 9 How long will this take? This activity should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. What technology will it use? Learning Management System (LMS) Materials needed? A device that allows updating of LMS content. TABLE OF CONTENTS Message other participants in the LMS subject... 3 Navigate to the messaging window... 3 Filter messaging to only view/message students or lecturers... 3 Message a participant or all participants... 4 Message an informal group... 4 Message students who have not logged in for a period of time... 5 Message students who have not logged in for a length of time... 5 Message assignment non-submitters (Turnitin assignment)... 6 Navigate to the assignment... 6 Open up a message to non-submitters... 7 Compose and send your message... 7

Navigate to the subject that contains the people you wish to message. 2. In the Navigation menu (typically located on the menu bar on the left of the screen) Navigate to the Participants link which appears under Current subject. Filter messaging to only view/message students or lecturers 1. To filter and view only students or lecturers - select the dropdown list under Current role and choose from Student, Lecturer or Tutor (only available if there are tutors in your subject), or you can leave this as the default All participants if you wish to message everyone.
4 Page 4 of 9 Message a participant or all participants 2. Choose who you would like to message and select them within the list: a. To message an individual, check the Select checkbox to the left of the participant name b. To message all participants, select the Select all /Select all [number] users button available at the base of the page. 3. In the With selected users field, choose Send a message 4. Once the new page has loaded, enter the details of your message in the Message body section 5. Optional: Use the Preview option to view how your message will look useful if using media or links within the message 6. Choose Send message. Note: During step 4 you can remove any potential recipients by selecting the Remove button on the right side of their name. Message an informal group Note: If you already have groups set up, you can message the LMS group as needed refer to the How to add groups and groupings guide for further information on how to do this. 1. Check the Select checkbox to the left of a participant name/names 2. Select all names on the current page that you wish to message (Note: You can only select those in the current page, however further options are available in the messaging area) 3. In the With selected users field, choose Send a message 4. If you have additional participants who need to be added to the message, use the Keep searching link available at the top of the window. Navigate to additional pages using the numbering available, and add more message recipients (repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each page listing participants you wish to add)
5 Page 5 of 9 5. Once all you have added your chosen participants to the message, enter your text in the Message body section. 6. Optional: Select Preview to view how your message will look if/as needed 7. Choose Send message once completed. Message students who have not logged in for a period of time Message students who have not logged in for a length of time 1. In the Navigation menu (typically located on the menu bar on the left of the screen) Navigate to the Participants link which appears under Current subject. 2. Select the dropdown list under Current role and choose Student 3. Under the Participants heading, navigate to the Inactive for more than [select period] dropdown menu and select the number of days/weeks inactivity you want to target e.g. message students who have not accessed the subject for more than 2 weeks. The LMS page should refresh and display only those students who have not logged in recently. 4. Select the Select all /Select all [number] users button available at the base of the page? 5. Using the With selected users dropdown box, select Send a message 6. Add a message into the Message body 7. Select Preview as needed to view your message, then choose Send message.
6 Page 6 of 9 Message assignment non-submitters (Turnitin assignment) Note: This feature is only available for Turnitin assignment submission dropboxes. Ensure your assignment has been created as a Turnitin assignment (not an LMS assignment) in order to use this feature. Refer to relevant guides on how to create a Turnitin assignment as needed. Navigate to the assignment 1. Navigate to the subject which contains students/others you wish to message. 2. On the top right of the page, select Turn editing on 3. Navigate to where your assessment is located in the LMS subject. 4. Enter the assessment via the link, which will take you to the Submission Inbox. The Submission Inbox tab should be highlighted at the top of the page.
7 Page 7 of 9 Open up a message to non-submitters 1. Select the Notify Non-submitters link available at the top of the list of student names. Compose and send your message Fill the Subject and Message boxes with your heading and message. When you have completed your message select the Send button at the bottom of the screen. Note: If you would like a copy of the message, select the check box above the Send button.
