Page 1 of 15 Padlet In short, Padlet is a post-it system that creates a shared space for students to share contributions (text, video, sound etc). It can be used as a learning tool without the need for students to create a user account. It is similar to Pinterest, simple with virtually no learning curve for students. Outline: The purpose of this guide is to show users how to use Padlet in a learning environment. What will the guide cover? The guide will cover the process of creating, embedding and maintaining Padlets in a LMS subject. How long will this take? For first time users, this activity should take up to 30 minutes to complete. What technology will it use? Padlet (3 rd Party), the LMS and simple HTML. Materials needed? A tablet or desktop computer.

Padlet offers different formats which provide different opportunities for collaboration and interaction: Wall anonymous posts of text, images, sound and/or video; most akin to Pinterest. Canvas - mind-map like tool that can show inter-relationships Stream Blog like, one item at a time

Page 5 of 15 Grid best if the items are of similar size (rare) Columns columns for categorisation tasks for example a simple Kanban board. This guide will focus on the simplest variant: Wall the process remains the same. Start the Padlet creation process On the top right of the page, select New Select a design Under the Wall tile, select Select

Page 6 of 15 Set Padlet basic details 1. Title of your Padlet (try to align this to your subject module number/name) 2. Description is a good place to put an instruction or question that will generate discussion and prompt opinions 3. Wallpaper there are lots to choose from, try to make it relevant to your subject or question. 4. [ Scroll down to see more settings: Posting & Address ] Set Padlet advanced details 1. Comments 2. Address the web address of the padlet. Tip: change the address to the subject name and week eg edu9abc_wk1 3. Select Next when done.

Page 7 of 15 Configure public access to the new Padlet To avoid student having to create accounts, a Padlet is configured to be (a) secret ie only viewable by link (b) writable. 1. Under the Privacy heading, select Secret 2. Beside the Those with access label, select Can Write 3. Ignore Add Contributors 4. Under the Advanced heading, if required, you can enable Moderation 5. Select Next Finalise the new Padlet To avoid student having to create accounts, a Padlet is configure to be (a) secret ie only viewable by link (b) writable. 1. Select Start Posting 2. The new Padlet will appear, ready for posts to be added.

Page 8 of 15 Updating the Padlet settings The Padlet settings and privacy options can be changed at any time. 1. the SHARE link sets the Padlet privacy settings 2. The cog icon sets the Padlet general settings 3. The ellipses icon opens a text menu to access general, privacy and other settings Add Padlet to LMS Embedding a Padlet in a LMS subject is straight forward. Two relevant embed options: a) Full embed the Padlet opens in the flow of the subject. This guide demonstrates the process. b) Preview card embed a fast loading image with a link that opens in a new window. Note: If you notice your LMS subject loading getting noticeably slower, then you may have too many embedded Padlets in labels across all of the sections (eg LMS Collapsed Topics format). Fix: either(a) use Preview card embed; or (b) embed Padlets in a Moodle Page or simply hyperlink the Padlet to open in a new window instead.

Page 9 of 15 Open Sharing 1. On the top right of the page, select the Padlet menu (represented by an ellipses) 2. Select Share or embed Choose the Embed sharing option Under the Share heading, select <> Embed in your blog or your website menu item.

Page 10 of 15 Copy the Embed code Under the Full embed heading, select the pink COPY button. Open the LMS Subject Go to your LMS subject. On the top right of the page, select Turn editing on Navigate to the Moodle item where the Padlet is to be inserted. This is typically either a Moodle Label, Page or Book.

Page 11 of 15 Edit the Moodle item In the editor, select the <> icon in the toolbar, which is the Edit HTML Source button The HTML Editor appears.

Page 12 of 15 Paste in the Padlet embed html code In the HTML source editor, paste the Padlet embed code. Note: if HTML code already in the editor, paste the code at the very top or bottom or paste it directly after a </p> code. Close the HTML source code editor Select Update The Padlet will now appear in the LMS text editor.

Page 13 of 15 Save the Moodle label / Page / Book Select Save and return to subject The Padlet will now appear in the Subject, ready for use. Using Padlet the student experience Adding a post Students add posts by selecting the pink & white plus button. Tip: if the pink button is missing, then the Privacy access is not set to: secret or public; and/or Those with access: Can write. Accessing Help Padlet help is available at On the top right of the page, select Turn editing on

Page 14 of 15 Maintenance Subject Rollover At the end of semester, the Padlet will contain student posts. If the subject is reused in a subsequent semester, the Padlet will display the old posts. At some stage before the subject runs again:, the old posts will need to be cleared; or a new Padlet created if you wish to keep the posts. Open Padlet.com 1. Open 2. Log into your account. Clear existing posts 1. On the top right of the page, select the Padlet menu 2. Select the bin icon to clear all posts End of guide
