1 LINKING KEATS COURSES TO LYNDA.COM PLAYLISTS AT A GLANCE 1. Log into KEATS, navigate to your course, turning editing on, go to your desired course section and add an activity or resource. Choose External tool and click Add. 2. Please ctel@kcl.ac.uk to request the consumer key and the shared secret for the Lynda.com LTI. 3. The external tool activity will need to be configured to take your students to your Lynda.com playlist when students click on the link from within KEATS. Students progress will be recorded. You need only configure these settings once at the course level. 4. Students complete the activities and videos in your playlist and their progress is recorded as a percentage score in your KEATS gradebook. As students continue working in the playlist, their completion grade is updated automatically in KEATS. 5. Lynda.com will use your students login information from KEATS to enrol them as students in your Lynda.com course. As academic or professional staff, you will become a Course Manager. Important notes: Only the academic or professional staff member who created the Lynda.com playlist will be able to manage the playlist because their login credentials are passed to Lynda.com. Completion grades will only be passed back to the KEATS gradebook for users with the Student role. If a user has a role higher than Student at the category or course level, their participation will not be graded and recorded in KEATS. BEST PRACTICES AND SOUND ADVICE Because of the one-to-one relationship between Lynda.com and the External tool LTI, only one playlist can be linked to one KEATS External tool activity at a time. To access Lynda.com content, students and staff must have access to KEATS. If grading is desired using the LTI, learning content on Lynda.com can only be accessed from within KEATS. Because your students will use the link from within KEATS to access your Lynda.com playlist, it is best practice to name the external tool activity the same as your playlist. The LTI is not compatible with Lynda.com native mobile applications e.g. Lynda.com ios, Android and Windows 8.1 Apps. External tools are context aware i.e. they have access to information about the student who launched the tool, such as institution, course, name, user ID and user role, which means they allow for progress monitoring. 2 ADDING THE EXTERNAL TOOL ACTIVITY 1. In your KEATS course, navigate to the course section where you would like for your External tool activity to appear. Click Add an activity or resource and then add an External tool activity. 2

3 CONFIGURING THE EXTERNAL TOOL SETTINGS AT COURSE LEVEL 1. First, configure the LTI settings at the course level. Find the Preconfigured tool setting and click the + sign to the right of the drop-down menu. 2. As a reminder, in order to activate the LTI tool settings, please contact ctel@kcl.ac.uk to request the shared secret and consumer key. On the External tool configuration page you will enter the Tool settings. a. Give the External tool a tool name, such as Lynda LTI. This will exist in your course only. b. Enter the Tool URL : c. Enter the Consumer key : [To be provided by CTEL] d. Enter the Shared secret : [To be provided by CTEL] i. To enter the shared secret, click on Click to enter text (next to the pencil and magnifying glass icons). e. 4 f. Change all three Privacy settings to Always in the drop-down menu. g. Click on Save changes. CREATING THE EXTERNAL TOOL ACTIVITY 1. You will now return to the General settings page for the External tool activity. Name of your KEATS course Helping set up a Lynda LTI 2. In the Preconfigured tool drop-down menu, choose the course-level LTI setting that you created above e.g. Lynda LTI. Note: You will not be allowed to edit the preconfigured settings on this screen using the text boxes or fields. 3. Give your External tool activity an activity name, which should be the same one you use for your Lynda.com playlist. You can also write a description that will appear on your KEATS course homepage (click on Show more and then tick Display description on course page ). 4

5 4. Verify that all three options in the Privacy settings are ticked. 5. Check the Grade settings for the External tool activity. You can provide a Grade to pass minimum completion score that will appear in the gradebook in red or green font colour as your students move through your playlist. Scenario: The Grade to pass is set at A student begins to watch the playlist (30% of the way) but does not complete during his first sitting; his score appears in the KEATS gradebook in red font colour as The same student returns and completes the playlist the following day; his score is then updated to in green font colour. 6. Click Save and return to course. 5

6 CREATING AND LINKING A LYNDA.COM PLAYLIST TO A KEATS COURSE 1. In your KEATS course, click the new External tool activity you ve created. This will launch the LTI in a new window/tab and will pass you to your Lynda.com playlist page. (Your KEATS course will remain open in your web browser.) Lynda.com will use your KEATS login credentials to identify you. 2. On your Lynda.com playlist page, create a new playlist by clicking on the blue button Create new playlist. 3. On the Create new playlist window, give the playlist the same name that you used above on your External tool activity in KEATS. You may also include the same activity description. 4. Click on Create

7 5. Build your playlist by adding content e.g. videos or courses. 6. In the breadcrumb navigation, click on My playlists to return to your playlist page

8 7. Click on Link to LMS in the menu to the right. Close the Lynda.com tab and go back to your KEATS course. Refresh your KEATS webpage i.e. hit F5 on your keyboard or the refresh button on your browser Click on your newly created External tool activity, which will bring you back to your Lynda.com playlist page. A black LMS badge will now appear next to your playlist name, and in the menu on the right, the link should now read Remove link from LMS. 9. You will notice the name of your KEATS course appears as a hyperlink next to Assigned to. Lynda.com creates groups using the KEATS course naming convention. You will become the Course/Group Manager and your students will be enrolled in the assigned group

9 GRADING STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN THE EXTERNAL TOOL 1. As students move through your playlist, Lynda.com will pass completion data back to your linked KEATS course. If a student starts but does not finish your playlist, a percentage score will appear in the gradebook, as shown in the first image. When that student completes the playlist, the score will be updated, as shown in the second image. Tip: As discussed in the At a Glance section above, completion grade data will only be captured for users with the Student role. Grade data for roles higher than Student will not be recorded.
