2 You can Browse Newspaper Title Year/Month Search Entire Database Advanced Search

3 Search Result List: Click on the newspaper title in the result list to view that particular page Refine your search OR Limit results by newspaper title or date with options along the left side of the screen. Scroll Down to Limit by Date

4 From the result list you can browse by year. First pick the decade and then the exact year. This will limit the results to only the selected year. Once you limit it by year, you can then limit it by month and day.

6 A toolbar is located at the top of the page: Return to the newspaper home page (NOT the result list) 2. Return to the results list 3. Search for a word on the current page 4. Crop a portion of the page to print or download 5. Download a PDF of the current page 6. Increase and decrease the size of the page on your screen 7. Move through the pages of this particular newspaper 8. Click on the hand to change the cursor to a hand to move the page around. more on this later

8 Advanced Search Search by First and Last name this will limit the search to just the name listed. If a middle name is listed in the newspaper, this search will not bring up those results This exact word or phrase replaces using quotation marks will search only for the exact phrase entered. All these words it will search for pages that include all the words entered; however, they will not necessarily be beside/near each other. They are just somewhere on the page. Any of these words will search for any of the words entered but not necessarily all the words will be included in the results. None of these words will exclude results that contain the entered words. For example you could do the following search: All These Words: Urbana Ohio None of These Words: Illinois

9 A Few Tips About Searching Search different variations of names or even nicknames William/Bill/Will/Wm. Remember women may be listed as Mrs. William Smith Names may be listed with a middle initial Use keywords if you cannot find a listing by the person s name : town names, accident, adoption use other words that may be listed in the article. Words my be hyphenated in the newspaper or abbreviated. Words may be misspelled. Word usage may have changed over the years: hospital=infirmary

10 To select a particular article use the Crop feature at the top of the page. Move the selection box by dragging the corners so the box is around the article. Maneuver the box around the desired area, and click on the next step icon at the bottom of the selected area. You will be shown a clip preview. At this time you can now print or download the selected area. See Next Page

11 Print the selected area remember the date and newspaper title will NOT appear on the printed page. Print or Download an image file of the selected area to your computer. Again, the date and newspaper title will NOT be indicated. You can also copy and paste this image into a Word document. Right click on the image and click on copy image. Open a blank Word document and click on Paste. You can then type date/newspaper title into the document.

12 Download the Entire Page Click on the Download button on the toolbar and this will save the entire page to your computer as a PDF file. You can then open the document in Adobe Reader. Once you open the file in Adobe Reader you are able to use the Snapshot feature to select a section of the page.

13 To Paste into Word (or a similar computer program) Once you use the snapshot feature to select a particular article Open Microsoft Word Click on Paste the article will be inserted into a Word document. You can then type additional information such as newspaper title, date, etc. in this document.

14 If you cannot find something through a search but you know the date, open the newspaper and browse through the pages. If you are browsing, use the FIND feature to quickly search the page on the screen (you will need to do each page separately) Remember to make a note of the date of the newspaper if you print only a portion. If the database will not open, try a different browser. If you continue to experience problems, please contact the library.
