Crystal is a staff at our Londonderry Office and has been on board with us for 7 months. In these past 7 months Crystal has brought lots of smiles and happiness to our office when she visits with the individual that she supports. Crystal has the type of personality that you want to be around. She is fun bubbly always smiling and has an infectious laugh! Crystal has made the Individual that she supports very happy in the time that they have spent together and that is seen wherever they go! Days with Crystal are filled with fun and silliness with just enough seriousness to be sure things are done. Some of the things you can find these ladies participating in are going to the beach and soaking up the sun arts and crafts such as face painting and canvas painting gardening and looking for more volunteer opportunities in their community. Thank you Crystal for your hard work dedication and positive vibes that you carry with you every day!

B A N A B C < A Time of Change Sarah Bedard Care Manager Supervisor Plattsburgh NY Plattsburgh s Service Coordination department has undergone a huge transition over the last few months. On July 1st our entire profession changed in many ways and we are learning and navigating through changes that seem to happen daily. Back on July New York State s Offi ce for People with Developmental Disabilities created Care Coordination Organizations CCO) to allow for confl ictfree case management. This meant that Service Coordination/Care Management needed to be separated from an agency that provided any other service. We were fortunate enough to have our RRI leaders choose which CCO they wanted to send all their Service Coordinators to. We all feel very lucky with the path they chose for us since we all have had very positive experiences with our new agency so far. We also had the ability to subcontract with our agency for the fi rst year so we can remain a part of Residential Resources. This allows us a slower transition over to the CCO which will be complete by July I am so proud of the optimism hard work dedication and passion each of the Service Coordinators now Care Managers have shown. They have been a constant for the individuals they serve even when we were full of uncertainty. They have worked many extra hours to ensure that all the work was done for their people. The teamwork they have shown to help each other when one was in need has been nothing I have ever seen before. We have made it through some of the toughest times together and know there is nothing they can t handle. Although we are all sad to leave the place we consider a second home and coworkers we consider family I am confi dent that they will succeed with whatever paths they choose. We are also thankful to Residential Resources for how much thought they put into their decisions and supporting us the best they can. Visiting Family Michelle Leger Participant Emerald St. Keene NH I recently went to spend the night with my parents at their house on Lake Monomonac. My dad took me and my niece Allison out on the lake in his party boat. There were a lot of boats on the water that day and we saw people tubing. I would like to try tubing someday. While we were on the boat my mom was cooking our dinner. It was Jambalaya and it was delicious. It was great to see my parents and to visit with my niece. They had to fi ll in for our very own John Castor who has been our grill master forever; he was away on Cape Cod enjoying the sun and water with friends. Many enjoyed visiting with old friends and making new ones. We had a special guest John Bates the fi re prevention offi cer from the Keene Fire Department. He gave a brief talk about fi re safety and demonstrated how to use a fi re extinguisher. We had a few brave folks who wanted to test their power and skill at using a fi re extinguisher. Comments were that was neat it was heavy and there sure is a lot of force behind it. Thank you to all who came and to all who helped with the many tasks of setting up serving and clean up. 4 Ÿ Ÿ ª «Ÿ ± Ÿ ² ³ Ÿ Ÿ µ ³ Ÿ ± Ÿ SIMPLE NUTRITION Wayne King RN Nurse Trainer Scarborough ME The benefi ts of eating a healthy diet and maintaining a strong body affect us in many ways. Good nutrition and exercise contribute to our energy levels strength and mental clarity. We even look more attractive when we re fi t and wellnourished! Nutrition doesn t have to be complicated. Understanding which foods offer the most benefi t and those that add risk to our health is a good place to start. Everyone says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This is true as long as the foods you include in that meal are packed with nutrients and not tasty but harmful ingredients like sugar and salt. A nutritious meal will stave off hunger and temptations to snack. Not that there s anything wrong with snacking as long as it provides your body with benefi cial building blocks. Fruits and vegetables are perfect alternatives. Try new foods be creative and enjoy fl avors. Eat slowly drink plenty of water and of course limit alcohol and caffeine consumption. Plan ahead. Many of us lead busy lives and meals become an afterthought as we drive into the fast food lane. Supersized meals that these businesses promote often contain more than the recommended amounts of calories fats and salt for our entire day! One simple method of meal preparation suggests that half of our plate should consist of vegetables. The more variety of colors provides the most diversity of nutrients. Corn potatoes and carrots contain a lot of sugar and should be placed in the quarter of the plate reserved for starches and carbohydrates like rice pasta and bread. Whole grains should make up at least half of the grains you consume. The remaining quarter is reserved for proteins like lean meat fi sh cheese and dairy products. Remember portion control. The Dreaded F Word Christine Townsend RN Nurse Trainer Londonderry NH So the summer is about over. That means fair season back to school time pumpkin spice in everything time and Halloween. Our wildlife friends who stay around and awake over the winter are all storing up foods for the cold months. We need to be prepared for what comes next as well. That would be fl u season. It appears that physicians are already seeing signs of the fl u. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are recommending that we get our fl u shots early this year by Halloween if possible. The concern is due to the fact that last year s fl u season was so severe. Typical signs and symptoms of fl u include fatigue aching muscles a high fever and a dry cough. Flu symptoms come on suddenly with little warning that you are coming down with something. Preventive measures include receiving the vaccine staying hydrated good hand washing and staying home if you are sick to avoid spreading it to coworkers or schoolmates. Dispose of used tissues in plastic bags remember that computer keyboards phones light switches doorknobs and elevator buttons among other things are touched by many different folks during the course of a day so disinfecting often is a good idea. Sneeze into your elbow vampire style instead of into your hand. Now back to our wildlife friends. Have you noticed how many squirrels there are around this year? Avoid or limit saturated or trans fats salt and sugar. These enhance fl avors to make food more attractive but are not healthy. They contribute to an increased risk of diabetes high blood pressure heart attacks and strokes. It s just not worth it. Don t forget to exercise. Adults should do at least ½ hours of aerobic activity at a moderate level or 1¼ hours at a vigorous level each week. The past recommendations that we need to have long workouts no longer holds true.
