Detailed Feedback What is your primary role at the University? # Answer Count Faculty/Staff Student Total
Which system(s) did you test? # Answer Count D2L's Brightspace Canvas Both Brightspace and Canvas Total
Which LMS experience did you prefer? # Answer Count Canvas D2L Brightspace Total
Why do you prefer the selected LMS? (OPTIONAL) It was easier to navigate. seems much more user-friendly. With Brightspace I had no idea what was going on. With Canvas things were organized better and more "at-a-glance" friendly. I've quite familiar with Canvas already; how its structured is more beneficial to me as a student. I love how it reminds me of stuff I have to do. Its system is less disorganized than blackboard and is more user friendly. Better Interface. Interface is far easier to use on Canvas. The toolbar on the left is concise and easy to use. Brightspace looks like a LinkedIn knockoff. I have used D2L platforms before and I was never impressed. I used it at my community college. Its much better than sacct. Sacct sucks asshole. Use this instead. Simple, Straightforward, User-friendly I preferred this one because as I was doing the testing it was alot easier to find certain things and to figure out how to work around the site. I liked the set up better of Canvas. Also, I have used Canvas before at the Junior College I attended. Having worked with several LMS (WebCT 4, WebCT 6, Blackboard 9.) on this campus, Canvas provides an interface that is more basic (does not have every option that Blackboard or Brightspace have) which may motivate more faculty to use an LMS to provide course materials to their students. It does have its drawbacks (limited to options on course menu - not as flexible) which in turn will force faculty to be more organized, which should benefit students. I also think their mobile app is easy to use. Overall, Canvas provides a more effective and efficient experience for both students and faculty. Brightspace has many great options but for a faculty member who wants to set up a course quickly, these options would be overwhelming. Canvas lacks in some options like the ability to create a manual column in grade center, options to limit number of attempts for assignment submissions, no enumeration for quiz question answer choices, location of grading schema and weighted options are inefficient...but there are workarounds. Brightspace is a great system but I see it most effective for a power user. Canvas works more seamlessly and appears to be more intuitive when setting up and navigating through the system. D2L seemed more user-friendly in terms of navigation, easy-to-understand directions for adding content. The grading area also seems easy to use and understand; the various grading options are clear and seem plentiful. Also, the appearance (set-up/structure/layout) is more visually appealing; it reminds me more of a simple website with everything neatly organized. Canvas seemed to have very neat tools like the youtube lectures and other things, but I felt a bit overwhelmed by this LMS; I think things weren't clearly explained in terms of how to use all of the neat tools at my disposal and the layout of this LMS felt messy and a bit confusing. Better layout, mobile app If we're really looking for a next gen system, I think this is the only one that truly is next gen. I really like the integration with commons that you can go out and pull ideas or content into your course shell and it's built out. In general, I liked the Canvas interface, ease-of-use, and efficiency. It allows you to get more done on a single page and with an efficient number of 'clicks'. easier to navigate and find information that is important to students Easier to view and use. Easier to navigate, better aesthetic, intuitive design, cleaner I was first introduced to canvas at American River College last semester; one of my professors was the first to try it before the rollout. The software had a lot of problems interpreting online quiz answers, and it was a pain for the professor to use the LMS. Brightspace has a very clean and intuitive user experience; canvas does not.
Brightspace's quiz system, which I can only imagine will be used extensively, seems more interactive than canvas's. Brightspace has more data-reporting options available, such as the ability for students to see how they rank against classmates; canvas does not. Overall, brightspace seems like a more complete LMS than canvas. It is clean and clear, not dark and cramped like blackboard and canvas. I liked the format of the entire website. Very straight forward, easy to use and applicable for students. I also like the opening page is the most recent updates as well as the syllabus right on the first page. I did not like the bright space format or user friendliness at all. Also barely worked on my new lap top and crashed multiple times. Brightspace would not load on my laptop no matter how many times I tried. I personally like blackboard and fell that canvas is the closest to it. Easier to read, find the information you are looking for and just has a better layout. It was very hands on and it works on many platforms. bright space seem to break down or wouldn't work on some systems. Nice preferences on how to manage course work and interaction. Had more things in common with the system we are currently using. Easy to navigate I thought that the interface was better for quizzes, assignments, grades, and calendar. But, I don't know if students can create their own discussion threads? More user friendly, visually less cluttered, fewer steps to get each task accomplished. Many of our students come from community colleges, which often use Canvas, so it's easier for many of our students to use- a familiar platform will help smooth transition to Sacramento State It is very easy to navigate thru, and has a calendar where all your assignments are posted. The screens and icons are arranged in a simple way. There are more options to work with. Less clicks to achieve your goal. Simplicity The community college I transferred from (Solano Community College) used Canvas for online/hybrid classes. The interface is very simple and easy to navigate through. it is clearer to navigate through More familiar with it. have used it previously and really enjoy it The interface layout for Canvas By Instructure can be easily navigated and it is clear cut. I find information faster and it has a more modern look. It seemed very user friendly and intuitive. As a first time user I was able to navigate through the sample class with ease. The layout seems more organized and extremely easier to maneuver. Much easier to navigate than both bright space and blackboard. Very modern and simple to use. It is very well organized everything you need is right in front of you. Brightspace is where is at. The layout is new but similar to Blackboard. I think changing to this would be a lot better to get students acquainted with the new experience. Brightspace was very cluttered. It required installing separate things just to take a quiz. Canvas was cleaner and much more appealing to me as a student. Also liked that the quiz worked without extras. I felt like I could focus on the class in CANVAS and felt lost and unable to even see class info due to having to figure out the system in brightsapce its more user friendly and looks nicer I liked the set up better than Canvas
I prefer the Canvas because the Links are a bit more lively. I didn't like either. Both have widgets that aren't required. But in terms of easier to the eye, the canvas was easier to navigate. Brightspace had too many paragraphs of words that made it a sore to the eye. I would have to read around to get to what I wanted. The menu/navigation bar was a big mess. I prefered the canvas as the menu had icons, which could have done without, but made it easier as it had the most essential sections on the navigation menu. The layout is similar to Blackboard which I have grown to appreciate. I like the layout. It looks clean and easy to follow. I have had three years of prior experience with Canvas and it is the absolute best. It is extremely easy to navigate and very straightforward. This is the same system used at the community college I transferred from. Sierra College and American River College use canvas and it makes the transfer process easier if the online classroom system is the same. Check out PC mag review. Good intuitive interface the way the scrolling is structured for the entire page and the side bar menu is up the entire time Blackboard works fine, it's organized, simple, straightforward. If I had to pick between these two pieces of garbage Canvas is easily better. If I had to use brightspace by D2L in a professional capacity I would rather drop out and go to a university that takes itself seriously. Riddle me this, why does D2L use terrible icons with tooltips that say "courses" instead of a button that says "courses"? It's because whoever designed D2L thinks obscurity and simplicity are the same things. More faculty and programs are requiring efolios, so this would prevent students from registering for yet another website just to do homework, so I like that is included (especially since I presume assignments submitted through Brightspace could easily be added to the efolio). My concern with both programs is that there is an section that is a little more prominent. Most students have enough trouble checking their SacLink s, but if they have s coming in from some places through SacLink and other s through the new LMS, one (or more likely both) will be neglected. Granted, college students should be responsible enough to check any s, but I will admit that even someone like me who does check my regularly would get tired of having to check multiple places to get different announcements. It had a cleaner layout and was more user-friendly. The mobile app is nice and I prefer the layout of Canvas over Brightspace. The calendar is much nicer to look at, and the quizzes on canvas have much, much better features, such as autosave, less obnoxious confirm dialogues, and less pages to flip through per question. Very nice! Brightspace is just like a sacct clone, quiz-wise. Not so nice. Canvas's user interface was a lot more intuitive and straightforward. It was stream-lined, easy to move around, and I had clear access to my grades as well as percentages in the class. Also, all of the tab options made sense. It is more similar to BlackBoard, which will be a great transition from blackboard to canvas. Moreover, it is more easier to navigate, more organized, and simple for staffs and students with little technology knowledge. Cleaner design makes it easier to navigate. It is very easy to navigate and also reminds me when an assignment is due for a class. Much easier to use than bright space. Its amazing, I love Canvas <3 Neither one of these systems works for me - my assessments did not work, and they are each more complicated than Blackboard. I prefer that we stay with Blackboard - is this an option?
Everything was well organized and easy to find, when looking through the Course I really like the set up and how the syllabus was posted. Everything was easy to use and understand without direction. the site was easy to use. Everything was right in front of me. The syllabus for the class was only a click away instead of having to click on individual subjects. All assignments that were due was listed. For an extreme busy person this site made it totally easier to walk through it without feeling lost. THE USER INTEFACE IS EASY TO NAVIGATE Online was easier and smoother to navigate. Canvas is simple to use and easy to find things. Though, I did like D2L because it was brighter and refreshing on the eyes. Canvas is a little too dark colored. Maybe changing the color scheme. Smoother Interface, more up-to-date look and feel, aesthetically pleasing and less of a chore to navigate Easier to user for faculty and staff supporting faculty. Canvas is much more intuitive than Brightspace, and more logical. Workflow is better, especially since you can create a test student in each course, submits activities and grade them. That feature is limited in Brightspace. canvas handles the migration of content better - too many quirks in Brightspace. Due dates were clearly marked, easy to navigate as well More user-friendly and simple layout; also seems to have more possible features than canvas It was much easier to navigate Brightspace than Canvas. I felt everything was clearly labeled and straight to the point on Brightspace. I like the way its structured. Its very organized. used at Sierra College. Very intuitive and easy system It is cleaner, easier to look at, and more intuitive. This LMS Canvas, is optimized for modern use and displays everything neatly and conveniently with as little clicking as needed. I felt like i instinctively knew where everything was which proves efficient design. This is what us students need to improve performance. Regarding brightspace it felt just as scattered as sacct just with a new skin. I don't care about looks if practicality is not there first. This is where canvas defeats brightspace. Canvas appears to feature remnants of Google material design which makes interaction intuitive and familiar though being a new platform. I have experience in the sector of ux/ui so you can trust my opinion is worth considering. - Roger Alexander Fleenor Very easy to use. Assignments are on the rights hand side, so there's no excuse to forget about an assignment. easier to navigate While the layout of brightspace is more aesthetically pleasing, the quiz function of canvas is much, much better. First, there are less confirmation prompts, which would normally be a problem, but the layout of the quizzes is very minimal, and is not confusing at all. So, the quiz taking and grading process is much, much smoother. This is very important when doing large amounts of work online. Also, canvas auto-saves, while brightspace has save buttons. Canvas also immediately shows corrected answers, and sends notifications (which are optional!!! YESS!!!) when grades are in, if not immediately available. Please go with canvas by instructure. The overall layout of the program was much more visually appealing, making it more desirable to look through. Canvas was not at visually friendly making it more difficult to look around and find things. Familiar with D2L from community college. So much more user friendly and modern Canvas is a lot easier to navigate and does not overwhelm me as much as birghtspace. Canvas is simple. Canvas site or pages fit screen, no need to scroll up or down too much. I like how I can still see the left side bar of links
when even when the page is loading. In brightspace, the whole page loads and makes my eyes can't focus much on the things I want to see. The Brightspace website seemed very clean and easy to navigate; I've used Canvas before (a few years ago), but it was still more difficult to find things through Canvas compared with Brightspace. Much more visually appealing and easier to navigate I have used it before while taking community college classes at Yuba College and Woodland Community College. I love how easy it is to take classes online because of how easy Canvas is to use. Canvas is hands down the best option for any university to switch to. Easy navigation for necessary tabs. A lot nicer layout. It feels like Blackboard, only much nicer UI and layout. I did not test the mobile, but I feel as if I was a new student, Canvas helps things look a lot nicer and allows me to be more organized. Brightspace was okay, but it felt like Blackboard with a new skin. It was just as cluttered. Canvas by comparison to me is much more organized and nicer. It is just better organized and easier to navigate through. I have worked with Blackboard, D2L and Canvas, and I like Canvas better by far. It is intuitive, have not had any problems with the test taking, and it offers more user friendly features, such as file upload from anywhere, built in conferencing, Speed Grader, and an integrated Inbox, to stay connected to members. It is also very visual and I am finding students are liking it better as well. The user interface for Brightspace seems more friendly compared to Canvas. Also, Brightspace loaded quicker than Canvas on my laptop. Neat, functional interface. Huge success at Sierra College. Brightspace just seemed clearer - everything was easy to find and identify. Nice layout - clear, uncluttered, user friendly. Uploading and copying looked like it was much easier. There were some similarities to Blackboard, which would make learning the new system easier - not as much of a learning curve as with Canvas. Canvas looked more complicated - I could not see how to do several things, implying a steeper, and more frustrating learning curve. They were both awful. Messy interface. Confusing. SacCT is better. Don't change it!!! Canvas is a little better organized that bright space. I hate both of them. I mainly liked the organization and layout of this lms as opposed to brightspace Better. My wife teaches at Sac City College and they are getting rid of D2L and going to Canvas. She showed me around in it (she has a PhD in Educational Computing) and I liked it better. Layout It was a bit easier for me to find my way around, and wasn't as general as Brightspace. I felt as though Brightspace was too generalized and bare, therefore not catching my attention as much. Canvas was simple and very easy to understand. I also liked how quizzes were done using Canvas, such as being able to see the quiz right after finishing it to see which ones you got correct. I recently transferred from a 2 year university using Canvas. Not only do I not want to learn a third learning platform, I also found the mobile app for Canvas to be exceptional compared to the alternatives. easier I used it at my community college. It's easy to use, shows all the due dates, shows your class percentage, it's just better in every way. My past colleges used Canvas and I found it extremely east to use and did not have to ask for help to navigate properly. Easier to create content, grade student responses, and embed extra media.
Much more conveniently organized and better looking to the eye. Brightspace I had to look around more to find where I wanted to go - canvas was instantly easier to navigate and seemed more user-friendly. I have used it in high school so I am familiar with it. Also, the interface is a lot more user-friendly. Easier to use and design is better. More of a user friendly site, I was immediately turned off by the Canvas Site. Visually pleasing and simple. It seemed easier to navigate and more organized! Both provided information/links clearly, but brightspace is more visually appealing. Canvas looked a little dated (like blackboard). easier to user, design looks better and mobile friendly Canvas is more organized and easy to work with and understand. More organized and easier to work with and understand but I do still rather stick to blackboard (SacCT) Similar design to the current D2L. The design is simple, and easy to use. Everything is easier to find. Looks neater and more modern. Cell phone display is easy to navigate and looks nice, which is important considering how many students use the mobile version od blackboard. Brightspace seems at first glance more user friendly with more guides available Easier to read and follow Canvas was much more intuitive than Brightspace. I did NOT like how Brightspace's homepage is set up, among many other design issues, random headings have somewhat large font sizes for no reason and different sections on the site are not clearly delineated. Just seems like a lot of text on every page to dig through, with little consistent design between pages. On the other hand, Canvas' homepage has well-designed sidebars on both sides for both navigation and course management. Brightspace's homepage is amateurish! The Brightspace headings change when you change courses/sites/anything off of the home page. Canvas is much better in that the sidebar is CONSISTENT (very, very important) as well as being easier to understand. Also, all of the headings on a course site do not all fit on the headings bar on top of the page (again, this is an example of poor web design - Canvas uses the sidebar instead of the header, which avoids this problem altogether). I actually prefer Blackboard to Brightspace, Brightspace is lacking in many ways and seems like it would create unnecessary frustration due to the mere design of the site. Overall, Canvas is overwhelmingly the top choice for me. Content is more readily presented to the student via this option. I feel as though I needed to do more digging into Canvas to find course content whereas with Brightspace it was presented in one area and I could filter down by module as needed. used it before its sleek and easier to use I thought the layout was more straight forward and easy to navigate. I also liked the calender and to do list feature. Looks like a quick and easy way to have everything planned out and right there. No need to go to a bookstyle planner or put it into my computer calender. I like the organization of it and seems to be much easier to navigate through I like the Canvas Commons Portion
Canvas is a very user friendly, clean, organized, and superior experience. Makes it easier for students to navigate, and better for teachers to work with. messed up my previous vote, canvas' interface is much clearer and easier to navigate through. The interface is clear and easy to navigate through. It seems easier to use, looks professional, also like the total grade part. plus I sometimes take classes in American River College so it gets confusing using two different systems-arc also uses Canvas-. I may be bias, but I still like canvas much more than brightspace. brightspace looks a bit messy and unorganized to me. I've used it before and feel comfortable using it for Sac State It's more simple and easy to use and understand. In order to find stuff through Brightspace I had to really navigate the website to search what I wanted versus having it simple at the canvas website. Clean design, good mobile app (which is what students often utilize more than desktop versions) This module was user friendly and intuitive. It was easy to navigate and populate with materials. Students wouldn't, in my opinion, have a steep learning curve. Having used this module in the past, I know that students respond well. Cleaner UI/Structure Actually has borders I have used it before at my community college, and it is super easy to use! easier to locate things Canvas system is a lot more structured. Borders are defined, menus are visible and clear, and design is easy to understand. It also seems faster. Although I haven't dived too much into any features that might have been available, if the supreme structure and design tell me anything, the features should be solidly developed too. Brightspace is really open and doesn't seem to deploy any techniques of design that provides contrast between the elements. It also doesn't feature any lines visible or implied (no structural separation) to separate different elements. Fonts and sizes feel very similar not allowing any contrast to once again differentiate between text. Canvas on the other hand employs all aspects of design vert well. User friendly Easier to use It is much easier to use and understand. Everything is easy to find and in one place. More straightforward and simple layout. easier to see Because I don't know what else to press, I hate both options. Why can't we just keep Blackboard?! It was intuitive, features drag and drop, the grade book is very straight forward. I feel like with a hybrid course (which is what I teach) it would be more useful for the students than D2L or Blakboard. As a grad student who also uses courses on the student side I also feel like I would see announcements and course material more easily and readily. I've used canvas before at Sierra College and in my experience have found it user friendly and filled with helpful tools. The interface is also more intuitive than brightspace's. Overall Appearance: I find the Canvas webpages to be more visually appealing than Brightspace's. Assignments: Canvas allows you to see a list of assignments for the course, and sort them by either due date or type. Brightspace sorts by module, with no apparent way to change this to be by due date. Grades: In Canvas, clicking on an assignment in the grades screen takes you to that assignment. Brightspace does not do this. Mobile App: Although I was able to download both LMS's mobile apps, I was not able to log into either of them. However Canvas's has a 5 star rating on the App Store, while Brightspace has 2. All of the above areas are wins for Canvas.
More simple to use and easy to view grades and assignments its very clear and user friendly, the app is also helpful Simple to use. Very straightforward and similar to blackboard. The set up seemed smoother and easier to navigate through. easier to use and looks nicer It looked equally attractive and loaded quickly but a optimum mobile experience is required since I'm often on the road. The mobile app has more and better reviews. I hated D2L when u used it at Los Rios, Sacramento city college and American river college, it's to difficult to use and is not pretty to look at, the canvass is much more user friendly in appearance and usefulness. Without a doubt and hands down canvass over D2L any day. The brightspace system by D2L is a lot cleaner and more understandable than canvas. Also brightspace looks similar to D2L which is a system I used to use back when I went to CRC. The layout was visually appealing and it was easy to navigate. More easier to navigate through and find whatever I'm looking for. I would say it is more user/student friendly. it seems to be cooler. Seems more intuitive. Also, more aesthetically pleasing. Intuitive, simpler, had access to relevant information at the ready for regular log-in use. D2L/Brightspace had to be deciphered to use. Interface was much more user friendly and attractive I liked Canvas because it was so much easier to use than Brightspace. The interface was much more student friendly. I liked the dashboard option as well as the calendar that would show all assignments for all the classes. Canvas would be an upgrade from SacCT, and Brightspace would be a downgrade. I preferred neither. keep blackboard, it works fine. The layout is much more efficient than Brightspace. I feel like Canvas is more organized. I already had it for a different school. I'm used to it. I have used it before in my community college and I thought it was fairly simple and easy to navigate because of all the well labeled tabs on the side. I actually very much enjoy blackboard and feel that that particular program should be kept. However, If I absolutely had to choose a new one it would be brightspace. This program is easier to follow and less overwhelming from a student perspective. It is very easy to use and more organized Better layout and functionality. easier to find my courses and the interface is more user friendly in my opinion. Brightspace looks like twitter and I just want the functionality to find my classes rapidly... Canvas had the best organization and that's what is most important. I could find everything I needed without a guide on Canvas, while I could not do that for brightspace. Everything being on the top makes it easier to navigate. The areas to click are also more defined. It looks more professional and like a nicer online working environment. It looks easier to use for things like online classes. Much more user friendly and functional
Canvas' layout and color scheme is more pleasing to the eye; it makes me want to use the system. Without having any guidance, I felt less overwhelmed and was able to navigate through "my course" better than Brightspace. With Brightspace, the home page confused me a bit. Are the announcements just for my courses or Sac State students, in general? I also didn't see how some of the tabs on the homepage will be of any use to me, e.g. an available reward for Brightspace Explorer. There is a need for some sort of tutorial when using Brightspace. Going back to Canvas, there is a minimalistic feel to the system. I think that's what college students need: content, reminders, access to information and discussion without all the fluff. It resembles Blackboard but just upgraded. Canvas looked a lot better on a first impression and it looked a tad bit more user friendly as well. I liked the design aspect of it and the functionality was fine as well. Brightspace felt like it was cramming things together for me and the UI colors just blended too much by default. It's more straight forward and not flashy, I feel like you can find what you need faster It seems more straightforward. Canvas offers superior organization accentuated by a wonderfully clean interface. I have taken many classes online through Canvas, D2L, and BlackBoard. Canvas is by far the easiest to use and the most helpful by clearly displaying upcoming assignments and deadlines for all enrolled classes clearly on the home page. This is a feature I have strongly missed with BlackBoard. I often have to dig through dozens of files and pages in my courses to find the information I need. Brightspace would also be a great improvement over BlackBoard but at its best I find that is ALMOST equal to Canvas, which receives my vote as the best learning management system. It seems to be more user friendly. I have previous used this in jr. college too. simple It didn't look like Brightspace allowed us to import blackboard courses, but Canvas at least had that option (whether it works is probably a different story). Also, in general, Canvas felt more intuitive and seemed like it had more flexibility in what you could do with it. Left/right sidebar (Canvas) is much more pleasant to interact with than top bar style (brightspace); better contrast between navigation menus and actual content in Canvas; Canvas feels more intuitive to use. Both seemed capable of all required functions, but Canvas was more enjoyable. I am familiar with it, coming from Sierra College. And I really liked it The interface seemed intuitive. I'm sure I was missing some stuff, but I felt like I could fiddle around and didn't need too much instruction to get things done. I have used Canvas previously at another university and the organization and ease of use is much higher than that of Blackboard I used to use D2L at ARC and I like their new design even more. I tried the other one and it was just meh Easier to navigate, less clutter, and aesthetically pleasing. I didn't like that the CSUS social media was a feature for brightspace. When accessing a course, I prefer the layout of canva in comparison to brightspace. I like that canvas features a running list of activities due for my classes and updates on grades right on the main dashboard. I felt that Canvas was better organized, more visually appealing, and made it easier to access assignments w/ their due dates. Los Rios Community Colleges use D2L, so Brightspace is more intuitive and user friendly. Everything is more streamlined where Canvas is more scattered and less intuitive. Easier interface for me Brightspace by D2L seemed harder to navigate, it seemed less organized. all things were more accessible on Canvas. CANVAS IS BETTER!
I have not gone into a guided session yet so looked at both with no instruction. I felt that Canvas was immediately more intuitive and gave me a better spread of information at first glance. I also found it far easier to navigate the site. very easy navigation, everything is right there and i don't feel like i have to click around everywhere to find what i'm looking for. very organized It is very easy to navigate, as well as very intuitive. Both of these seem inferior to SacCT, however, since students have to spend a significant amount of time looking at it, I would prefer Canvas because it's much more aesthetically pleasing than Brightspace. I like the format better as compared to brightspace, it is more clean. Brightspace has way too much going on in the user interface as you log in, it's not intuitive to navigate. I can see this as a point of future frustration for students and faculty not being able to access the content they need and wasting time trying to find it. Canvas has a better user interface, and it's a bit similar in its navigation to SacCT, so I think it will be an easier transition. The design is more modern, and there aren't an excessive amount of things to click on. Brightspace is just too crowded in its design, all the information is being cramped into a tiny space, which is not effective. Easier to find important information and reminds me of blackboard. I thought both were great, but I chose Canvas as my first choice simply because I have used it before at Sierra College and am familiar with it. It worked well in those classes and I don't remember ever encountering technical problems with its use. I liked that there was a what if scenario type feature in the grading section. This would work if the instructor has loaded all possible assignment points into the LMS. Although, I fear that the choice won't matter much because there are so many instructors that don't utilize SacCT to it's fullest extent anyways. Some of my professors don't use it all. Or they just use it as a tool to post powerpoints and that's it. easier to navigate because everything was more condensed on the page. I thought the brightspace pages were way to big. I love the layout. I like how all the different tabs are listed horizontally. I also like it because its somewhat familiar because its by d2l, which is what I used at my community college. Familiar, yet new and different at the same time. Canvas's layout just doesn't appeal to me. Easier to navigate. Straightforward which is really important! Students do not have time to learn how to use a whole new system- then be able to confidently turn in assignments or take tests. Canvas seems much more user friendly and the mobile app is wonderful. My community college actually used canvas and it was wonderful. I think it is more user friendly. I like the tabs up on top, because I feel like it makes the system more organized. Nothing is hidden. If i was not good at technology, I feel like it would be much easier for me to use brightspace. I used to attend Sierra College which uses Canvas, yet it looks different than it used to. So testing both of these out was brand new to me. Easy to navigate and complete assignments I used D2L in community college and liked it; compared to Canvas it seems like a better fit to replace BlackBoard. Canvas was more simple and it was easier to find things. On D2L it took me longer to find where I go to see my courses. On Canvas I found it immediately. not as busy and overwhelming of a webpage compared to canvas UI looks easy and simple to navigate I have used Canvas in the past and like it a lot more than Blackboard but after testing Brightspace I like Brightspace more than Canvas. The amount of content that is accessible through Brightspace is just a little easier to access and feels more organized and user friendly. I had no problems navigating its sample website having never used it before. I wouldn't mind either of them replacing Blackboard but Brightspace is my favorite.
I've used it before at Sierra College. Nicer, simple layout than brightspace; Still easy to find things It seems more accessible for students and easier to use. I prefer the menu bar up above then to the side of the page. The appearance is much nicer as well. Allows students to see their progress, awards and class list which is very helpful. Unsure whether Awards would be a useful option, but it gives Faculty the option to make the LMS interactive. The buttons on Courses allow you to print and send the specific page to your "binder" which may also seem useful in terms of going back to that material. In comparison to Canvas, Bright space looks open and userfriendly with many functions that can prove to be productive to both students and faculty. Canvas is so much better! I had it at my other University I transferred from and it was amazing! Easy to learn, quick, teachers loved it, easy to message, see files, it is what Sac State NEEDS! I hate that I have to used remind, tophat AND sacct. It's ridiculous, I just prefer one general place with all of my classes. Looking at grades and turing in assignments is a breeze. PLEASE GET THIS. AND IT'S FREE. TOPHAT ISN'T. Easier to navigate the menus and tabs. Have a reliably functioning iphone app. Better layout. More information readily displayed. Feels more user friendly. It was a lot easier to navigate; however, I did feel it lacked all the options that d2l brightspace has. Significantly smoother, buttons/options made sense and were organized effectively, everything was laid out as expected. Canvas is displayed logically and easy to use, comprehend, and understand. I think I liked the color distinction? Brightspace was a nice system but there wasn't a lot of color, and I think that being able to see different sections is more useful, and makes it easier to notice everything available The content is well organized and accessible in Canvas. In D2L, the content is scattered and hard to find. Ideally, we would not be switching away from Blackboard. I like that canvas has the side bar on the left with the things to access rather than the top bar that bright space I actually prefer SacCT over both of the LMS options. The layout of the home page was easier to navigate, especially with the different options listed to the left. The colors were inviting and it seemed easier to navigate I've used it before at Sierra College and thought it was miles ahead of Blackboard. The software functions nicely. Great mobile presence. Much more organized! the way I clicked around made sense and I was never lost. I got lost allot and it was difficult to figure out where I was on the Canvas LMS. I wish I had been using Brightspace LMS my entire college career, however I know future hornets will love it! Simple and everything is compact and easy to navigate, along with a better look. easy to use and navigate ) I like how it looks, the layout and design is stylistically sleek and modern. 2) I think it is easier to navigate. I think the headings for different sections would be more intuitive and easier for a majority of people learn how to use quickly. I work at WCC and they are currently using Canvas. Often I have to help students learn how to submit assignments and understand how to use the software. "Modules" is not a natural or common term for all students to understand that there is content or prompts from their classes. I understand that student can and would learn how to use the software, but I can see Faculty become irritated to re-explain how and where to locate the content they are providing and assigning to students.

Any additional comments about D2L s Brightspace? I dont need awards or portfolio pages. All I need is an easy way to keep track of my classes. Very clean and structured. By default, the course homepage is set to the Content page (which lists the TOC, modules and sub-modules). Optional - Created a new widget based homepage that displays Announcements, Updates and Calendar widgets. Next, from course navigation menu selected "Content" to upload a syllabus and begin adding content. Instructors can begin by selecting Syllabus, add a welcome message, list of course objectives, description or other course information and upload a syllabus (drag & drop). Syllabus will display automatically in frame - no need to click on a separate link or download. There is also a "Course Schedule" option (similar to Course Summary option in Canvas) that displays upcoming events in content such as a new assignment. To proceed to add or create content, click Table of Contents. Select "Add a module" below TOC on left menu or on TOC page. One can upload files into a Module or sub-module using the drag & drop area or the "New" button - then select Upload files. Can add any number of Modules (comparable to Content Areas in Bb). A number displays to the right of each module indicting the number of items that need to be completed. Can become confusing if too many sub-modules are used. Use Modules and Sub-modules to organize content. Click "Add a Module" below the Table of Contents Panel (Modules are comparable to content areas in Bb). Within the "Module" option to "Add Sub-module" is available. Sub-modules display below main module name in the TOC panel. Use the Expand All/Collapse All options to view more or less details for modules (can also expand/collapse modules individually). Can use drag and drop to change order of Module in TOC from left panel or in main TOC page and also change order of submodules and other items in module. I started out on the Content page (table of contents) page which was blank. On that page there is a welcome message that tells to user to use the import course button to copy or import a course package or to use the Add module option to create content. Although the add module is directly to the left on the course menu, It could be missed. However, once I click in the Add module area, I typed my first module title and pressed enter to create it. I was taken directly to the module page and started adding content to my module by use of the add description/date options at the tope and the New button which allows you to choose from a variety of elements to include in module like file, quiz, link. I also clicked on the Syllabus menu options which provides instructions to add a description for syllabus and an area to upload my syllabus. I do find the workflow to be intuitive. Faculty would just need to know that content is organized within modules which are comparable to content areas in a Bb course. I like that there is some sense of direction with the labeling of features on the page which make it easier to follow. Once you add modules these appear on the left navigation menu area under a table of content heading. Next to the table of contents, there is a number which indicates how many modules are in the course. The numbers next to each module area title indicate how many elements/items are within each module. You can click the TOC to see all module areas combined on one page or click on the individual module title to see that module area only on main page and go through content that way. Module areas can be reorganized from table of contents menu by dragging and dropping titles or if you are on the main Table of contents page, drag and drop module areas on that page to desired location. Elements within a module can be dragged and dropped as well to move them within module and module contents can be collapsed or expanded depending on viewing preference. You can click on down arrow next to module items/contents to "edit properties in place" which provides the option to change content to be published or be set to draft mode so it is not visible to students. In other words, I can hide or unhide content within a module and apply time/dates for availability to students) or the main module as a whole. You can use the "bulk edit" option to edit time/date properties at main module level or within module for items. Checkmarks indicate that a module or content within module is published and the word "draft with options" appears if not visible. Dates adn times are also visible for items that have been set to release at a certain date/time. Very comparable to what faculty are already using in Bb. -CV VERY important! ; It determines how much hair I have at the end of the semester... 21 Crashed on me a couple times. Layout is too messy. It's hard for me to navigate around the page. How do I know where to go, if I have to read through a bunch of text to get to where I want? And the navigation couldn't be anymore pleasing to the eye? It didn't even look like a navigation menu. Good luck finding anything. focus is on aesthetics I had a difficult time figuring out how to move from one page to the next. I couldn't find how to go back sometimes. Screen display difficult to see because it lacks distinct separation between areas. It looks more likes a blog or any other website page It's very bland. No color. Displeasing to the eye. Makes me want to disengage. Wish they had a list of all courses that could be access from a side pane instead of having to go back to the home page over and over, but over all very clean and nice to use. Blackboard works fine, keep it. The menu organization was not as intuitive as it should have been This one felt more foreign--maybe partly because it had the main things on the top rather than on the left. Unfortunately it's rather unpleasant to look at, and unlike SacCT, there doesn't seem to be a way to choose a custom theme (and yes, that is extremely important) the biggest fault is that everything was the same color, it made it more confusing somehow to find things I was looking for busy layout It is not immediately obvious where to find your class information. Excessively overcomplicated. A simple assignment becomes a chore to create when a variety of settings are fragmented across different course menu areas and sub-menus. Create: Can create from either a Module/Sub module or from main Assignments page. In Brightspace, the term assignments refers to your traditional assignment (i.e. paper, project, etc). In Assignments page, use the "New Folder" option. In a module/sub-module use the "New" if creating or "Add Existing Activities" if previously created or imported. Layout of settings can be confusing as there are several tabs (Properties, Restrictions, Objectives, Turnitin) during assignment setup (more steps if adding from a module/submodule). Option to add a Rubric is present during assignment setup as well as option to limit to one submission. However, the "Grade Item" option is confusing. This option is used to create the associated gradebook column or select an existing gradebook column that was previously created. If creating a new "grade item" more options are provided (grade item title, short title, maximum points, rubric, restrictions, etc.). There is another option in the main properties that reads "Out Of" that is also related to the assignment's points possible (very confusing). Instructions box and attachment options are also provided. Grade Submissions: Grade from Assignments page, folder list will provide a summary of total files submitted for each assignment as well as unread and flagged. Instructor must click on assignment name. Users and Files tab, probably easiest to go to Files tab, click on file which will display submitted paper. No inline comments options, instructor would need to download assignment and make comments using word or other application. Alternatively, they can use the grader app on their ipad. Grade panel on right provides area to enter a score/pts, feedback (text, audio or video, file).
Create Assignment: I can create an assignment from within a module by clicking on the "new" button and then select "new assignment" or create the assignment by clicking on Assignments page (click assignments link on top navigation) and selecting "New folder". When creating assignment from within a module area, when you click "new assignment" option, user is taken to a page called "Create a new assignment folder" for course introduction module". In Brightspace assignments are referred to as "assignment folder" this may be confusing to a new Brightspace user. On this page you would enter a title for assignment and description. User may not know that they should save this as a draft to move on to next step which is to add the details for this assignment such as date/time, related file attachments, options to set as a one file submission or unlimited submissions, add point values and learning objective. I like that the assignments feature allows instructors to restrict the number of submissions (as they already do in Bb) and which Canvas does not. One critique is that instructor has to click on the add new grade item (plus button under assessment options on activity details tab) for the assignment if they want an associated column created in the grade center for the assignment but once they click on this option the points they specified in grade points box are carried over in new grade item window, and they can proceed to add restrictions for grade item visibility to students. Learning objectives would have to be set up first in order to bring them up in the Learning objectives tab to be associated to assignment. There is also a completion summary tab for the assignment which will display a summary of who has submitted to the assignment thus far which is helpful for grading. clicking on a name in this list opens the evaluate submissions page where instructor can download submission and enter grade in panel to right. Grading Assignment: There are a few ways to get to view submissions to grade. Click the Assignments link to open the assignment folders page which lists any assignments set up for course. If it is graded and has an associated grade column, there will be an icon that looks like a badge next to assignment name. There is also a summary of how many files have been submitted and how many have been read by instructor. Clicking the assignment name will open the folder submissions page where you can see submissions by user's name or file name. Clicking on either will open the evaluate submissions page which has a grading area on right panel similar to one in Bb but cannot see assignment submission in line (you can in the ipad app) Instructor can download submission and annotate and attach and enter grade in score box and publish. You can also grade directly through grade center by locating column name (under enter grades tab) and click icon to view submission and grade. Main thing from a training perspective would be to identify the best workflow for faculty to follow to grade assignments and promote that workflow. I can upload to assignment from link in module area or from assignments page. If I submit multiple times I see all my submissions. I was able to "impersonate" one of my enrolled students in course so I am able to submit and see my grade for assignment. As instructor I cannot annotate assignment inline with grade panel. I can see my grade for assignment and feedback from the grades page or under activity details/assessment area when I click on the assignment link. -CV It's nice that when you enter a quiz or assignment, it asks for a submission first thing with a popup at the bottom of the window - no need to look for the button on the page. When you hit submit assignment, it doesn't really change the page. That is the assignment page and submission page, which I thought was weird. Was a little hard to find the submission part of the page. Couldn't see where to test It was such a sore to the eye, I did not bother looking around at anything other than closing the useless announcements. Instructor cannot save assignments submitted in Student View. Easy No preview Blackboard works fine, keep it. I got lost twice while clicking to it. busy layout
