Detailed Feedback What is your primary role at the University? # Answer Count Student Faculty/Staff Total 00 98
Which LMS experience did you prefer? # Answer Count Canvas DL Brightspace Total 00 9
Why do you prefer the selected LMS? (OPTIONAL) The site loads more quickly and it has a more user friendly layout. I really like the layout and the navigation is much easier. It is similar to Blackboard and is easier to use and navigate than the DL Brightspace LMS. I preferred how compact everything was on canvas. Brightspace features were more spread out and was a bit overwhelming trying to find everything, whereas on canvas I was able to find everything right away I like Canvas a lot because of its simplicity and straightforward nature of selecting my usual tabs (e.g looking at past assignments, a nicely interactive calendar for due dates and reminders, a simple inbox ). Also, it feels very user friendly and I feel that it removes the gutter Blackboard had with its unfriendly buggy interface. Was a lot more simple and straight forward. Easy to navigate Organized, simple, very easy to use and easy navigate throughout canvas. The look and ease at finding information was more appealing on Brightspace. Canvas felt like too much info in a small space. more familiar with it Easier to navigate. Interface more intuitive. Canvas' layout is more streamlined than Brightspace. I initially was a bit overwhelmed by Brightspace because I wasn't sure where anything was. If anything, the homepage of Brightspace looked more like an updated version of MySacState. Canvas is more focused on the courses and accessing them, whereas Brightspace makes the courses a secondary priority by only have the little boxes icon as the only way (that I'm aware of) of getting into the classes. It's simple once you get the hang of it, but the organization of Canvas is superior to Brightspace. When I log into SacCT, I want to get into my courses right away, and Canvas allows me to do that. All of the things I would/should want to see and have access to is right on the frontpage without me having to click extra icons. Brightspace makes "being connected" more important because of the Twitter feed and all the junk articles in my "feed." Like, I don't wan to sign into my school account and see fucking Twitter. I don't need anymore distractions as it is. And I don't care about being "In The Loop" or where things are on campus- I'd go on MySacState for that information. Programs for our courses should be focused on the courses, not the Twitter feed for SacState. All of that junk is great, but keep that shit out of our courses. I appreciate the innovative, futuristic approach that Brightspace is trying to go for, but I think they forgot what the focus really is. That's why I prefer Canvas. I had DL in my last colleges and it was simple, worked really well and was well liked by students It is something different and a more interactive website. I feel that canvas is very similar to SacCt. I like how Brightspace shows you the upcoming events and I also like the different toolbar options at the top of the website (content, assignments, discussions etc). It seems easier to access information such as grades, assignments. Announcement visual is bigger font and easier to see on the page. It is also more detailed which grading. I hear other students who use DL at other schools like it more than using Canvas I liked having the menu options down the left side as opposed to at the top. easier to use, great calendar and nicer look. Better integration of video content and organization/management of course content. One caveat: Deaf Studies faculty using Canvas will likely need expanded storage and data capability, since video integration is often a significant component of ASL and Deaf Studies coursework. CANVAS IS DOPE!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE GET RID OF THIS SAC CT BULLSHIT It was definitely more user friendly. It looks more organized.
many teaching options and easy to use for students Canvas. The canvas LMS has a cleaner design and exudes more school spirit. I like that the and courses as well as the other tools are all consolidated and that upcoming due dates and events are clearly posted. I would like to see some features from the current LMS such as Sac State News, System Notices, and MySacState Messages included in the new LMS. Brightspace didn't seem to have an user friendly and intuitive site like Canvas did. Canvas I figured out how to use quicker and was easier than Brightspace. In my personal opinion, I chose Brightspace as I felt the learning curve for Faculty would be shorter when compared to Canvas. Mainly due to Intelligent Agent featured in DL BrightSpace, give professors more control over having a class cut off and say if they are grading in a curve. The Add-on support on the DL BrightSpace also would help with other features that maybe missing with the DL's base ( importing.csv etc for grades). What I have against Canvas is that it does not have much on intelligent agent yet(in stable) so a professor can't easily program to see over a given percentile. Off the two I would suggest brightspace of the two. If possible please do have a peek at Schoology, Its an LMS and a student social network in one according to many. The structure of the application, Canvas, is easier to navigate than Brightspace. Brightspace has a lot of headings at the top of the website. With Canvas, everything looks more simple and I like the outline of the tabs, which are darker colosr, unlike the dominantly faded and more white design of Brightspace. The quiz questions in Canvas are more comfortable to navigate because they are outlined. I like the overall set up much better. It is much more user friendly and I think that it will be much easier for new freshmen to adapt to. Sierra College, my last college, used this program, and it was easy and effective to use. Canvas Canvas is easy to navigate. I preferred Canvas overwhelmingly. The user interface was easier to find my way around. It seemed to be much smoother and moved between sections in the course interface much quicker than Brightspace. The layout of Canvas seemed to be much more intuitive than was Brightspace and even our current LMS, Blackboard. Easy navigation and colors are easy on the eyes compared to Brightspace They are fairly equal in terms of ease of use and visual appeal. I think it just comes down to smallest personal preferences. The brightspace by DL had too many words everywhere and it was overwhelming. I couldn't tell which words were from the "professor" and which ones were by the system. I also took a quiz and didn't receive my grade anywhere in brightspace. Canvas was more direct and minimal so it was easier to find everything. Personally, I like blackboard the most and I am used to it. Better integration. The home menu is easy to navigate, and it is easy to get to classes. It seems a lot cleaner and easier to read and navigate. It's very user-friendly. Canvas while a bit more organized it felt enclosed brightspace felt more open and interactive. However Canvas' potential when you get to actually use it, is more complete. I did like the virtual classroom feature in brightspace but I can't see some professors using it. Canvas is cleaner, more user-friendly and intuitive. team canvas 5ever User Interface is nice The navigation bar on Canvas is short and simple, Brightspace has too many options. I get lost in Brightspace, not in Canvas. Overall Brightspace is more cluttered and too much scrolling compared to Canvas.
The tools as they were presented in the Brightspace sandbox seem to have a more robust layer addressing assessment and tracking of student progress. Overall the User Interface was easier to navigate. But a note about Canvas that I thought was compelling was the adoption rate factor. Canvas/Instructure is much more pleasing to the eye - which makes it easier to navigate. It feels more intuitive. Brightspace feels cluttered and clumsy. It was much more user-friendly, had a better UI and seemed like it was a more modern and easy to work with system. Much easier to navagate around. Very simple, and effective. I like that it allows you to review all submissions of quizzes and assingment details from the gradebook. Canvas was most similar to the current LMS which will help lessen confusion and it will help students adjust quicker to it. Simple design makes it easy to navigate through while also being very organized, and direct. Easier for first time students! It felt more familiar, was easier to navigate well it seems that "Canvas" will force the instructors to be more active with it, which i like. "Brightspace" has way too much going on and is probably far ahead of most peoples navigating capabilities (Not very new user friendly). But my question is, why are we trying to get rid of blackboard. I've been taking classes for 4 years and have had nearly zero problems with that system. And since my opinion will hopefully be heard, i might as well add that the restaurants in the union should be replaced with some other more popular and healthy places. i never see anybody in the Mother India line, and Burger King? are you serious? i can't believe thats even an option. Simpler layout. Easier to navigate. Loaded faster. It felt easy to pick up and not a complete change from what we should already know from blackboard Brightspace is userfriendly. Better organized and better graphics. Easier to look at The Canvas LMS has an easier navigation system at the side and I like how the menu pops out. It doesn't completely block or shift the page and disappears when you need it to be. I really liked how the homepage of Canvas was similar to an app, the entire page was filled with content without overwhelming the user. The links for the navigation system were very clear and simple. I also think that Canvas was very similar to blackboard, and a little more compact, which was better because it wasn't a dramatic change from Blackboard and would be an easier transition to change to. In the brightspace LMS, the page was very simple. The header and navigation system was at the top of the page, which wouldn't be helpful if the user was at the bottom of the page and had to scroll all the way up to navigate to a different page. The navigation for the course was also somewhat overwhelming, since there were a bunch of links for the course. When I attempted the quiz for the sample course, the area for the quiz was extremely small and compacted (even with the scrollbar) and hard to use. Much more st Century It was very easy to navigate through compared to the other program which was a little difficult to find certain buttons and areas I like how the webpage is set up. Everything is at the top and I don't have to click through too many categories to get what I am looking for. Plus it just looks neater than Canvas. the quality of the page looks much more professional and it was easier to navigate It has some similarities with Blackboard where on the left side of the page you can access the content area. Very similar to Blackboard which I am already very familiar with.
Very easy to navigate (Feedback received via from student Karisa Guettler and submitted on her behalf by Teresa Palmer) From: Karisa Guettler Sent: Thursday, March 9, 07 3: PM To: IRT LMS Evaluation Subject: I favor Instructure Canvas I had this system at a community college and I found my way around it with such ease. Everything was exactly where I felt it belonged. I like that it is much more simple than Blackboard, especially with the icons on the left and announcements on the right, instead of all being in the center. The inbox system is more orderly than the other option. There are 0 community colleges in California that use this platform. Many students take courses in these institutions and students are more likely to be successful in those courses when they are already familiar with the platform. Clean interface and easy to navigate

Anything else you would like to tell us about your testing experience? With Instructure/Canvas, it took me almost no time at all to familiarize and navigate and feel comfortable. It has a really pleasing interface and the layout felt very complimentary to online learning and tasks associated with classes. they both have good things. the Canvas is alot like sac CT which is good but brightspace is a lot more easier to navigate becuase everything you need is right infront of your eyes. Thank you for allowing students the opportunity to explore these options. Students and faculty will experience an easier time transitioning into canvas If blackboard does get abolished, explain to us what was wrong with it. Im curious I think we need to look at how Canvas and DL integrate with other LMS-type portals that the professors at CSUS use. For example, how well do each of them communicate with SIMnet, Pearson mylab, Great River Learning, Globalyceum, TopHat, etc. Can they integrate to a point where we have a one-sign on system? As in, can we sign into the unified platform once and have access to all our course material rather than signing on to 5 different portals for the necessity of a class? I really liked the ease of Brightspace - obviously I haven't actually used it, but it felt easier to navigate and simpler to use. I like how we were able to navigate and see what it would be like for our classes. I have been a long-time user of DL, and have been using Canvas for the past two semesters. I prefer Canvas. Most importantly our transfer students will likely have used Canvas since it is used by most community colleges in California. The transition might be more comfortable for these transfer students with a familiar course management system. I enjoyed DL much more I do not have any information on how training for the LMS are planned but having a sample test on training and professor's easy of use should matter more than student's, since most of us students tend to be more UX centric. If its not easy for the creators to create, they might take a size of the consumers away. Disliked almost everything about brightspace. Canvas was much easier to understand and closer to the layout students are used to from blackboard. CHOOSE CANVAS BY INSTRUCTURE Canvas seemed most similar to the current blackboard in layout so I found it to be much easier to navigate. Brightspace however was new and a bit too bright for me to get used to. Canvas is better! Brightspace seems very cluttered, but Canvas is not. Both systems are better than what we currently have. I believe that Canvas is a better decision for this institution because of its ease-of-use. Brightspace has some nice features, but overall I think it is a little too complicated for the average user here.
