UPDATE Insert Background Image For DriveTest Release 22 and above Starting with Release 22 of DriveTest a new toolbar button has been added to the Plot Tab that allows the user to insert a background Image. The image can be used as a background map once it has be registered with the DriveTest map. This is a convenient feature for inserting high detail backgrounds, or inserting other map images for areas where the default DriveTest mapdata is too sparse. This document will describe two examples to insert a background Image on a DriveTest Plot ========== EXAMPLE 1 ========== Figure 1: New "Insert Background Image" button The Insert background Image button (see above) in the DriveTest Plot tab will start a wizard to guide the user through the steps of registering the image. Before getting started there are several steps that need to be done. 1. Need a back ground image in.bmp,.jpg, or.tif format. 2. The image needs to have two identifiable areas that are also identifiable on the DriveTest map. 3. The image needs to be placed in the correct Mapdata folder. For countries with no subregions the image file needs to be just in the C:\Mapdata\world\Country, where Country is the three letter abbreviation for that country. For Countries that have sub-regions (such as in the USA the State folders) or in countries that have supplemental ESRI shape files, the subregion folders. The image files need to be placed in the appropriate sub-region folder. Example: An image to be used in the country of Brazil, the three letter abbreviation for Brazil is BRA. The correct folder for this example is C:\mapdata\world\BRA. 4. The image needs to have North oriented to the top. Below is a screen capture of an area of Brazil we would like to have a background image for. Note there are identifiable geographic features along the coastline that we can use to register the image. If there were no geographical features, we could actual use the DriveTest system to create measurement dots at locations that we could later identify on our image. To do this we would need to drive to the known locations, make a measurement that will put a colored dot on the plot. To register the image we need two identifiable points. The more separation they have and the closer they are to opposite corners of the image the better we will be able to register the image. Page 1 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 1 ====== Figure 2; Identifiable points in the DriveTest Plot As an example of a background image we might capture a satellite image like the one below. Figure 3: Satellite image with the same identifiable points The name of our image (minus the boarders) is BraRioDeJanerio.jpg Page 2 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 1 ====== Start the Image Registration process: First we place the image in the correct MapData folder. In this case we place the image file in C:\mapdata\world\BRA. The result is pictured below. Figure 4: Image file in BRA mapdata country folder Now click on the Insert background Image button in the PLOT Tab. The Map Linker window appears. Figure 5: Map Linker Window Click on the Open an Image button shown above. A Select Image window appears. Navigate to the image BraRioDeJanerio.jpg, then click the Open button. Page 3 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 1 ====== The image appears in the Map Linker Window. Figure 6: Select Image Window To place the first index marker, click on the Place a Marker Tack button. Figure 7: Map Linker Window - place a marker tack The Cursor turns into a Red Tack. Using the mouse move the point of the tack at the first identifiable point on the Image, then click. Page 4 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 1 ====== Figure 8: Red Tack at First Identifiable point on Image The Map Linker window disappears and the DriveTest Plot Tab is visible. The cursor turns into a + (plus sign). Use the mouse to move the plus sign to the first identifiable point on the DriveTest map, then click the mouse. Figure 9: "plus" cursor at first identifiable point on DriveTest Map The Map Linker Window re-appears. Click on the Place a marker Tack button again and cursor turns into a blue tack. Using the mouse move the point of the blue tack to the second identifiable point. Click the mouse. Page 5 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 1 ====== Figure 10: Blue tack placed on second identifiable point The Map Linker window again disappears to expose the DriveTest Plot Tab. The cursor turns into a + (plus) sign. Use the mouse to move the plus sign to the location of the second identifiable point on the DriveTest plot, then click the mouse. Figure 11: "plus" cursor at second identifiable point on DriveTest Map The Map Linker window will re-appear. Click on the Link the image to the map button. Page 6 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 1 ====== Figure 12: Map Linker - Link the image to the map button The Map Linker window again disappears, and the linked image appears in the DriveTest Plot tab. Figure 13: Linked Image in DriveTest Plot tab. If you find some miss alignment, you can edit the locations of the tacks on the image by clicking on the Insert Background Image button in the PLOT tab toolbar again. This will take you back to the Map Linker window. Edit coordinates shown in Figure 12 above. Page 7 of 20

UPDATE ========== EXAMPLE 2 ========== The DriveTest Update-Insert Background Image document assumes that there are easily identified geographical locations to use as a reference to link an image to a DriveTest plot screen. In some cases there are no geographical locations, in those cases you can create locations with a little bit of simple editing. First assume that we are working with an image like the following: Figure 18: Image to be used as Map Background in DriveTest There are clearly many identifiable street intersections in the above image. But the DriveTest Plot of the above area looks like the following. Page 10 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 2 ====== Figure 19: DriveTest plot of area, no identifiable points To create identifiable points use a mapping program such as Google Earth to find GPS locations of some identifiable points of your image. The GPS points will be edited into a DriveTest.dto file to create dots on the DriveTest plot that can be used to identify points on the plot. Page 11 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 2 ====== Step 1: Pick out some identifable points that you will use for the map linking process. In this case we choose intersections that are far apart diagonally in the image. The further apart diagionally they are the more accurate the map-linking will be. Below we have picked out two easily identifiable intersections on the image. Figure 20: Pick two easily identifiable points on image Step 2: Find the GPS locations of the two points in another mapping program that shows GPS locations. Google Earth is a usefull application for this, it can be downloaded at: Page 12 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 2 ====== Below is a screen capture from Google Earth of the first location. Notice that the GPS location of the cursor is displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen. Figure 21: Google Earth Zoomed in on 1st Location Lat , Lon Page 13 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 2 ====== Below is a screen capture from Google Earth of the second location. Notice that the GPS location of the cursor is displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen. Figure 22: Google Earth Zoomed in on 2nd Location Lat , Lon Page 14 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 2 ====== Step 3: Open DriveTest with out a GPS reciever connected. Click on the New Job button to create a new job, pick a name for the new job like Link Image. Leave the frequency at 100 MHz, and the Signal Type at Analog. Figure 23: Open a new job "Link Image" use defaults In the Job Editor go to the Settings Tab. Make sure the Display Coordinates selected are Decimal Degrees. Figure 24: On the Settings Tab set Cooridates Display to "Decimal Degrees" Click the Save Job button to save the job and close the Job Editor. Page 15 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 2 ====== Step 4: In DriveTest click the Record Once button twice, let the system take two measurments. Figure 25: DriveTest Two Measurements taken with no GPS Next we will edit the DTO file and insert the GPS locations we found in Google Earth. This will make dots appear on the DriveTest plot in those locations. Then we can use the Update-Image Background map instructions to Link the image to the map. Page 16 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 2 ====== Step 5: Within DriveTest click on the View button on the left top side of the screen. This will open the Link Image.dto file in a text editor. (Click OK to the warning about modifing the file.) Figure 26: Link Image.dto file opened in Wordpad Yellow highlight shows empty GPS fields Edit the file by inserting the GPS locations we found using Google Earth. Figure 27: Link Image.dto file edited with word pad. GPS locations inserted (highlighted in yellow) Page 17 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 2 ====== Save the file. Exit Wordpad, then the DriveTest screen re-appears. In DriveTest click on the Job menu and then click on the Rebuild Mapping Database selection. To completely refresh the plot database select a different job then re-select the Link Image job. (This will insure that the Plot tab map display is up to date and displays correctly.) Click on the DriveTest Plot tab to see the dots you created. Step 6: Now copy the image file into the correct mapdata folder and you are ready to use the instructions from the Update-Insert Background Image document. In this case the image file is for the city of Rihadh Saudia Arabia, so the file would be copied into the C:\mapdata\world\Sau folder. Page 18 of 20
Update: Insert Background Image ===== EXAMPLE 2 ====== Following the instructions in the Update-Insert Background Image document after the pushpins are placed the DriveTest plot screen looks like the following: Figure 28: DriveTest Plot Tab after MapLinker PushPins have been located.
