MM Message Assembly Mode Keywords: MMS, SMIL List of acronyms and abbreviations: MM MMS MMSC SMIL 3GPP WAP Multimedia Message Multimedia Messaging Service Multimedia Messaging Service Center Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language Third Generation Partnership Project Wireless Application Protocol Chapter 1 Overview This document describes the message assembly mode in the MMS. It mainly introduces how to assemble MM messages in SMIL and briefly introduces the SMIL language. It covers the following contents: MM assembly mode Media type allowed in MM Brief introduction to SMIL All rights reserved. Page 3 of 11
Chapter 2 MM Assembly Mode An MM can be filled in with multiple contents each time, which can be of different media types. According to the assembly sequence of the message contents, the assembly mode can be classified into two modes: application/vnd.wap.multipart.mixed and application/vnd.wap.multipart.related. 2.1 Application/vnd.wap.multipart.mixed Mode As the name itself implies, the application/vnd.wap.multipart.mixed assembly mode means that all message contents are mixed orderlessly without time sequence. The contents of such a message may be displayed on a terminal at one time )a.Figure 1 shows the location of message contents in an MM. Figure 1 MM assembled in application/vnd.wap.multipart.mixed mode As shown in Figure 1, there is no relationship between all the message contents except that these contents are saved at different times. But when the message contents are displayed on a terminal, there is no display time sequence, and the contents may be displayed at one time. 2.2 Application/vnd.wap.multipart.related Mode When the application/vnd.wap.multipart.related mode is adopted for assembling an MM, there is a certain relationship between the message contents. The relationship may be the display time sequence, display location, etc. Thereby, when the message is displayed on a terminal, similar to a small film, a series of information can be displayed, thus making the MM display more fascinating. Figure 2 shows the location of message contents in an MM All rights reserved. Page 4 of 11
Figure 2 MM assembled in application/vnd.wap.multipart.related mode Compared with Figure 1, the message assembled in this mode contains an additional item called "presentation", and it is required that this information should be located ahead of other message contents. "presentation" is also part of the message contents, but there is a pointer (start) pointing at it. The pointer indicates that "presentation" is in the first place. If this MM is displayed on a terminal, the message contents will be displayed sequentially from "presentation". However, during the display of the message contents, the contents of "presentation" are not displayed, and are only used for abtaining some indispensable information that determines the display size, time sequence, locations, etc. of the other message contents. Thereby, the effect of a small film can be realized. What kind of information in "presentation" determines the display size, time sequence and locations of the other message contents? The answer lies in SMIL. Below is a simple SMIL file. <smil> <head> <meta name="title" content="mms" /> <meta name="author" content="wyang" /> <layout> </layout> <! root layout size--> <root-layout width="352" height="144" /> <! image size, location--> <region id="image" width="176" height="144" left="0" top="0" /> <! text size, location--> <region id="text" width="176" height="144" left="176" top="0" /> All rights reserved. Page 5 of 11
</head> <body> <! the first frame will be displayed for 5 seconds--> <par dur="5000ms"> <! when the first image is displayed, the image size and location defined in the layout will be used.--> <img src="firstimage.gif" region="image" /> <! when the first paragraph of text information is displayed, the text size and location defined in the layout will be used.--> </body> </smil> </par> <text src="firsttext.txt" region="text" /> <! the first section of sound--> <audio src="firstsound.amr" /> <! the second frame will be displayed for 4 seconds--> <par dur="4000ms"> </par> <img src="secondimage.gif" region="image" /> <text src="secondtext.txt" region="text" /> <audio src="secondsound.amr" /> <!--the third frame will be displayed for 6 seconds-> <par dur="6000ms"> </par> <img src="thirdimage.gif" region="image" /> <text src="thirdtext.txt" region="text" /> <audio src="thirdsound.amr" /> As shown in this SMIL file, how to display the other message contents is defined meticulously. The defined contents include the display time, size, location, etc. For detailed description of SMIL, refer to the relevant section in this document All rights reserved. Page 6 of 11
Chapter 3 Media Type Allowed in MM 3.1 Image The media type allowed in an MM determines the media support capability of a terminal. At present, the supported media types are as follows: 3.2 Text At present, the supported image types mainly include: JPEG GIF87a GIF89a WBMP 3.3 Sound A large number of Internet character sets. The supported sound types mainly include: AMR IME MIDI All rights reserved. Page 7 of 11
Chapter 4 Brief Introduction to SMIL The Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) is a simple markup language. It is similar to XML in writing style. So the detailed description of the writing rules is omitted, and only the basic labels of SMIL used for assembling MMs are briefly introduced here. 4.1 Layout Management Labels The layout management labels define the display size, location for various types of media. Label Attribute Embedded sub-label Description Layout None Region, Root-layout Region Left, top, height, width, fit, id None Root-layout Width, height None It defines the occupied control size and location for a specifiec media type. Generally, it only defines the control size and location for image and text. It defines the display layout size. The maximum size is For example: <layout> <! define the display root layout size--> <root-layout width="352" height="144" /> <! display image size and location--> <region id="image" width="176" height="144" left="0" top="0" /> <! display text size and location--> <region id="text" width="176" height="144" left="176" top="0" /> </layout> The width and height attrubutes of the "Root-layout" label define the root layout size of a displayed message. And the unit is pixel. The default root layout size is determined by the display terminal. The width and height defined in the "Region" label can be expressed as numerals (in pixel) or as the percentage of space occupied in the root layout. The left and top attrubutes defined in the "Region" label respectively indicate the distance between the image/text and the left of the frame and the distance between the image/text and the top of the frame All rights reserved. Page 8 of 11
wid h heig w 4.2 Media Type Label The media type labels define layout management, the resources used when different types of media are displayed, etc. Label Attribute Embedded sub-label Description Text src, region, alt, begin, end None Img src, region, alt, begin, end None Audio src, alt, begin, end None Ref src, region, alt, begin, end None This label is a general-purpose label. It can substitute for the Text, Img and Audio labels. However, if this label is used, the specific media type of the contents might be unknown. So this label is not recommended for use. For example: <! a specific image. The "Image" label is used for layout management, and is already defined in <lauout>.--> <img src="secondimage.gif" region="image" /> <! a paragraph of text contentx. The "Text" label is used for layout management, and is already defined in <lauout>--> <text src="secondtext.txt" region="text" /> The contents (src) that various media type labels point to should be consistent with the media types. For example, in <img src="secondimage.gif" region="image" />, the media type is "img", so the contents that the label points to should be an image, and the contents that src="secondimage.gif" points to should also be an image. Otherwise, the images cannot be displayed in the MM normally All rights reserved. Page 9 of 11
4.3 SMIL File Structure Labels Label Attribute Embedded sub-label Description Smil None Head, Body Head None Layout Header Body None Par Body 4.4 Contents Display Time Label Label Attribute Embedded sub-label Description Par Dur Img, Text, Audio, Ref The Dur attribute defines the display duration for the message contents in this label. This label defines the display duration for a piece of (or a group of ) media information. The unit of Dur is milliseconds (ms). 4.5 File Description Label Label Attribute Embedded sub-label Description Meta Name, content None The attributes of this label define some description information All rights reserved.
