1 Use GIS Web Applications: Address and Intersections Text Query Fiscal Year: Project: Census/GIS Web Applications Status Last Updated: 28 March 2005 Last Updated By: MMiller Overview In order to provide the 9-1-1/3-1-1 Call Center and other City staff the ability to determine the hundred-block address of a street and to determine various attributes of street locations, the Infrastructure Management/GIS Division has developed a set of text-based query tools. These tools are available from the Infrastructure Management/GIS Intranet (internal) website, which can be accessed at There are three basic tools: Location Information by Street Name (Address) Location Information by Intersection (Intersection) Location Information by Street Name (All Intersections) To access these tools, first direct the web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) to Figure 1: In the middle of the page, below Location Information, click on the Text Only link to open the text-based location information tools. 2 Figure 2: Text Tools Start Page All of the text-based web applications begin at this page. The following sections will go over each tool individually. Location Information by Street Name (Address Look-up) To use this tool, just type an address (must be a valid Dallas street address) in the box. Type the number and street name. You can include the street type but if you leave it off you will be presented a list from which to choose. Click the Submit button to enter the query. If there is more than one choice for the street name you typed, you will be presented a list from which to select the precise street name you want to query. Highlight the street name you want and click the Select button. Page 2 of 9

3 Figure 3: Select the Street Name You Want The application will return a list of attributes about the street hundred-block you selected. It will also return information about every block of that street name. You can scroll down the list to obtain information about other blocks. The block you selected will be highlighted in light purple. R or L indicates right or left side of street. Figure 4: Location Information Page 3 of 9

4 Notice that location information is presented for both the left and right sides of the street. The R or L immediately following the address range before the street name indicates which side you are looking at. Find Intersection Information To locate information by two intersecting streets, the same form is used as for the address look-up. Figure 5: Location Information by Intersection To search for an intersection, type two street names that intersect separated by the word AND. Make sure to put a space at the beginning and end of AND. Click on the Submit button and a new window will be opened that allows the user to select the exact street names desired. Select the precise street names from the two lists. Page 4 of 9

5 Figure 6: Select Exact Street Names If the user selects an invalid combination (i.e., the streets do not intersect), the Window will return to the same screen. The user should select the correct combination to proceed. If the user is unsure of the correct combination of street names, click on the Reduce button and the list of possible street names will be reduced to just those that actually form intersections. If the list is reduced to a single possible combination, it will automatically move to the next screen. Otherwise, highlight the combination you want and click Select. 6 The next screen gives the list of intersecting street segments at the intersection. The first entry in the list is the most likely but the user can highlight a different segment. Click Select to pick a segment. Figure 8: Pick a Segment The last screen pulls up the attributes for the segment selected, much like the Address Location application. Again, the selected segment is highlighted in purple and the user can scroll down the screen to view information about other segments on the same street. 7 Many users may be familiar with the functionality of the mainframe 3270 LINC phase GIS9. It allowed the user to enter a street name and return a list of intersecting streets. Unfortunately, GIS9 is incomplete and in many cases information is incorrect or obsolete. This is because the data used to support GIS9 is no longer updated and has not been updated in some time. A web application is available that provides information in a similar format. From the initial Location Information by Street Name screen, click on the Find All Intersections link in the upper right corner. Figure 10: All Intersections Entry Screen Type in a street name and click Submit. On the next screen, select the precise street name you wish to search for and click Select. Page 7 of 9

8 Figure 11: Select Exact Street Name The next screen will list all of the streets that intersect the selected street name. The number in the left column is the beginning address range of the selected street at the intersection with the street in the right column. In the example below, the first entry can be translated as E JEFFERSON BLVD Intersects S BECKLEY AVE at the 100 block of E JEFFERSON BLVD. If you highlight an entry in the list and click Select, the list of street segments at that intersection will be presented. Figure 12: Intersecting Streets Page 8 of 9

9 Figure 13: Segment List at Intersection The user can select an individual segment and click Select to see a list of attributes, such as Council District, will be presented. As in the previous two applications, the information for the selected segment will be at the top of the list and highlighted in purple but the user can scroll down the screen to view information about other segments along the street.
