2 Site Purpose The purpose of Jacob Kriese Photography is to exhibit selected galleries of personal and professional photography by the artist. The site will show compelling visual content in a aesthetically compelling way. It will be a portal for visitors to keep up on the travels of the artist, and offer an interface for users to order prints or digital content for personal use. Having the website will offer incomparable access to the artists catalogue, and could lead to now untapped revenue stream. Needs Analysis The website will be created to provide solutions in the following areas: Goals Show selected galleries of the artists s work CV of the artist Bio of the artist Contact portal for potential clients Print sales Blog Travel Updates Activity Updates 1. Provide galleries of photos to potential clients. 2. Provide contact information for future job opportunities. 3. Provide a blog for family and friends to follow the activities of the artist. 4. 3 Audience Characteristics The users of Jacob Kriese Photography will be of three different types. 1. Non-Professional a. Family and Friends of the artist i. Interested in pictures of themselves or the artists family ii. Online viewing iii. Download files for personal prints 2. Professional a. Looking for stock images, previously created images i. Will download digital images ii. Will pay for various rights usages for digital or print usage b. Looking to hire the artist for freelance commercial opportunities 3. Private Client a. Interested to hire the artist for a private opportunities Primary Audience The primary audience of Jacob Kriese Photography will be family and friends of the artist that will follow the artists blog page. The blog and some of the galleries will be of the artist and the artist s family activities. Family and friends can link to the artist s page, download pictures to their own desktop or the artist to have a high resolution file sent via . Users can send the artist an inquiry from the contact page. Secondary Audience The secondary audience are clients looking for stock images or to hire the artist for freelance commercial or private opportunities. Galleries will be separated by type allowing the users to easily find stock images that they need for their own publishing purposes. The proposed site design will allow users to send an inquiry to the artist explaining their needs. Future site designs could allow for direct download and a Paypal payment system. PAGE 3 OF 7

4 Competition Competition for Jacob Kriese Photography exists locally and internationally. Local competition exists in the form of other photographers offering freelance opportunities to local commercial and private clients. International competition exists in the form of any photographer that offers stock images on the web that are similar to the artists s own images. To get a better understanding of the competition I went to two other professional websites to get an examine their design choices, and study the difference between the two. The first site I studied was My impression of this site is that it is well designed with simple navigation elements and large photographs. The navigation is performed by dynamic lists (inverted drop-down menus) that rise when hovering over the main heading links along the bottom of the page. The website is very consistent throughout and provides an easy way for viewers to explore a somewhat limited selection of the artist s work. Their is no easy contact form that you can send directly to the artist and no blog. The mobile site is limited and looks quite a bit different from the PC version The second site I studied was The navigation elements are oriented to the left of the page. When selecting one of the sections, drop down lists appear. When selected the user is shown pages of galleries. When the user selects a picture a full browser, scrollable gallery appears. The design is very well done, with an easy escape button link in the upper right corner. Over all the design is very clean, and the contact page offers a contact form that is sent directly to the artist. Overall, insights can be gained from both websites. They are professional, clean and the aesthetics are very well thought out. To be competitive, Jacob Kriese Photography must exhibit these attributes as well. Best Viewed Assumptions The website I created is best viewed on a desktop machine, preferably a Mac, using the web browser Google Chrome Version A high speed wifi or ethernet connection is preferred because of all the pictures in portfolio view. Although, photos have been optimized for quick loading. The website was developed on a late 2007 MacBook Pro with a screen resolution PAGE 4 OF 7

5 of 1440 x 900. This is the optimized size for viewing the website, as higher resolution screens may render the pages smaller than intended. Future development will accommodate these differences. Test Plan I asked two friends and my wife to go through my website, and perfumed a usability test o n them. They all found the navigation straightforward, and were comfortable with the design choices. They had no problem perfuming the tasks of finding the portfolio page, the about page, and how to send a contact request form. Originally, I had the navigation centered across the top of the main content on the page. While I was putting the web-site together, I revised my notion of the aesthetic, and preferred it offset to the left. PAGE 5 OF 7

6 What learning did you take from the process of creating your project? I learned a great deal about understanding the inheritance, and working with the properties of divs. I also learned how to use CSS to create a roll-over, drop down navigation. Are there any sections that didn t work as you like? My about section didn t quite turn out how I wanted it to. I had wanted off-set, side by side divs. With my picture on one side slightly higher than where the text started on the right. However, after wrestling with the styling for a while, I decided it was more appropriate, and looked better, to have the picture over the top of the written bio. It also took some trouble shooting for me to be able to limit the size of the main content div on my portfolio page.
