3 Introduction Introduction About Microsoft Word 2010 M icrosoft Word 2010 has a variety of applications for use in your home and work life. This tutorial will focus on an application that lets you create and design a certificate of appreciation. Who is this Tutorial for? How is this Tutorial Organized? Objectives of Tutorial This tutorial is meant for people in business or government who wish to recognize the achievements of their employees. For example, a human resources officer may want to recognize the efforts of outstanding employees. It is designed for the novice Microsoft Word 2010 user. The tutorial consists of four lessons that will teach you how to create and design certificates in Microsoft Word Each lesson takes about ten to fifteen minutes to complete. At the end of each one, you are invited to do a few exercises to reinforce your learning. At the end of this tutorial, you will be able to: 1. Open a Certificate Template in Microsoft Word Design a border 3. Format text 4. Insert and change the colour of a graphic 1
4 Lesson 1 Lesson 1: Opening the Certificate of Appreciation Template in Microsoft Word 2010 The simplest way to open Microsoft Word is from your desktop OR you can use the Start button. If you don t already have Microsoft Word on your desktop, Lesson 1 will teach you how to create a shortcut. Then it will teach you how to open a Certificate of Appreciation Template. Lesson 1 Objectives Opening Microsoft Word from your Desktop In Lesson 1, you will learn how to: Open Microsoft Word 2010 from your desktop Open the Certificate of Appreciation Template To open Microsoft Word 2010 from the desktop If you already have the Microsoft Word 2010 icon on your desktop: 1. Double Click on the Microsoft Word 2010 icon That s it! You have opened the program so now you can go to the next part of Lesson 1 on Page 3. If you don t see the Microsoft Word 2010 icon on your desktop: 1. Click on the Start button at the bottom left of your screen 2. Click on or hold the cursor over All Programs 3. Click on Microsoft Office 4. Right click on Microsoft Word Move the cursor over Send to and Click on Desktop (create shortcut) 6. Go to your desktop by clicking on the rectangular box at the bottom right hand corner of your screen (to the right of the time and date) 7. Double Click on the Microsoft Word 2010 icon to open the program 2
5 Lesson 1 Opening a Certificate of Appreciation template To open a Certificate of Appreciation template 1. Click on File (at the top left of your screen) 2. Click on New (on the drop down list below File) 3. Click on Certificates Figure 1: Open a new template (Certificates) 4. Click on Business Awards Certificate 5. Click on Certificate of recognition for administrative professional 6. 6 Lesson 1 Summary Lesson 1 Summary Congratulations! You now have a template for your certificate that looks like this: Lesson 1 Exercises Figure 3: Certificate of appreciation template In this lesson you also learned how to create a desktop shortcut so you can open Microsoft Word easily from your desktop. The next lessons will teach you how to modify the template to suit your requirements. Exercises 1. How do you create a Microsoft Word shortcut on your desktop? 2. 7 Lesson 2 Lesson 2: Designing a Border The certificate has a border around it already, but you may wish to make it your own by changing some of the effects. This lesson will show you how. Lesson 2 Objectives Softening the Border In Lesson 2, you will learn how to: Make changes to the border in the template How to soften the border 1. Click anywhere on the border. The Picture Tools menu bar opens at the top of your screen 2. Click on Format (underneath Picture Tools) 3. Click on the soft edged picture 2 nd from the right (if you hold your cursor over it, the name soft edge rectangle appears) Note: the outer edge of the certificate is now softened Figure 4: Certificate with softened edge 5
8 Lesson 2 Making the Certificate Glow How to make the border glow 1. Click anywhere on the border (the text box markers should be visible) 2. Click on Picture Effects (on the tool bar at the top) 3. Click on Glow 4. Click on the picture 2nd from the right at the top (Green, 5 pt glow, accent colour 5) Lesson 2 Summary Lesson 2 Exercises 5. Then click outside the frame to see the glow effect. Summary Congratulations! You have created an attractive border that glows! In the next chapter you will learn to change the text and font to suit your needs. Exercises 1. How do you modify the border to soften its edges? 2. Where do you find the Glow button? 6
9 Lesson 3 Lesson 3: Changing Text and Font This lesson gives you step by step directions to enter the text you want and personalize its style. For example, you may wish to use the template again sometime in the future, so at the end of this lesson you will know how to alter information such as the name and date. Lesson 3 Objectives Modifying Text In this lesson you will learn how to: Modify text Change the font: type, size, italicize and colour Modifying text to make it yours To modify text in the certificate, go to the area you want to change and insert your new text. To change the name of the recipient 1. Click on the Name 2. Type Jennifer Doe To change the date on the certificate 3. Highlight the first line in the date, then type 20 th 4. Highlight the next line in the date, then type December 5. Highlight the last line in the date, then insert 12 7
10 Lesson 3 To change the name of the manager 1. Click over the text at the bottom of the certificate 2. Highlight the text, then type Jane Smith, HR Manager Your certificate should now look like this: Changing Font Changing Font Style Figure 5: Certificate with new text Changing the font You may want to make the text font bigger, change the text style, change the text colour or italicize it. Let s start with the recipient s name. To change the font style 1. Click on Jennifer Doe. Text Box Tools should now be open 2. On the menu bar Click on the arrow beside text type 3. Scroll down until you find Old English Text. Click on it Figure 6: Changing font style and size 8
11 Lesson 3 Enlarging Font To make the font bigger 1. Click on the arrow beside the font size 2. Scroll down and click on 48 (or you can type in 48) To italicize the font Italizing Font Changing Font Colour 4.
