2 Assessment and grading criteria To achieve a pass grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to: P1 outline the web architecture and components which enable internet and web functionality P2 explain the user side and server side factors that influence the performance of a website P3 explain the security risks and protection mechanisms involved in website performance P4 using appropriate design tools, design an interactive website to meet a client need P5 create an interactive website to meet a client need. To achieve a merit grade the evidence must show that, in addition to the pass criteria, the learner is able to: M1 explain the role of web architecture in website communications M2 explain the tools and techniques used in the creation of an interactive website M3 improve the effectiveness of a website on the basis of a client review. To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that, in addition to the pass and merit criteria, the learner is able to: D1 explain the role of the TCP/IP protocol and how it links to application layer protocols D2 discuss the techniques that can be used on web pages to aid user access to information D3 demonstrate that a created website meets the defined requirements and achieves the defined purpose.

3 Assignment brief The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of the web architecture and components which enable internet and web functionality, factors that affect performance and security issues. Scenario You have a new post at a local website company as a junior web developer. You will shortly be given a brief to produce a website for a local company. Before that, you have been asked to prepare some introductory information for clients to be included on your company s website. Task 1: (P1) This should be prepared as material to be included on a web-page. You do not need to write the code for the web-page at this point; you only need to prepare the content for the site. You are to compose a brief outline of the web architecture and components which allow the internet and websites to function. You have been asked to describe to customers how their web-site makes its way from your server to their customers homes. Your information should detail the various stages and processes that information must pass through to get from server to screen. This description should be based on the traditional/historic scheme of web architecture. You could present this information in the form of a flow diagram. Notes: you should include the following terms: Server Packet Router Switch Browser

4 Task 2: (P2) Prepare content for a second page which considers the benefits of particular server side capabilities for a company website; you should describe factors that limit performance and those which improve performance. Also describe the limitations of the equipment and software customers may be using to browse the website. Notes: you should include the following terms: Server-side: Bandwidth, server components, site design and size, expected traffic Client-side: Bandwidth, client hardware, browser Task 3: (P3) Website security is an integral part of website design. Prepare the content for a third page for your company to explain to prospective customers the security issues which the company considers when designing a web-site. The content should describe the general security risks which threaten the integrity of data. You should also define the laws and guidelines which various types of web-site must conform to. You could use screen grabs to illustrate your points. Notes: For instance, a website that stores users details will be legally required to comply with the Data Protection Act (1998). You should also include the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (1988) and the Disability Discrimination Act(1995). Task 4: (M1) Add a sub-section to your content from task 1 to give a technical explanation (to your peers) how the data is transmitted; you should add detail to your description from task 1. Make this explanation more technical than your description from task 1 and consider current methods of information sharing including web 2.0. Notes: You should include an explanation of web addresses, the domain name system, packet switching, Web 2.0, cloud computing and make reference to protocols (eg TCP/IP).

5 Task 5: (D1) Create the content for another page giving a technical explanation of application layer protocols in relation to the TCP/IP protocol stack model. This short explanation could include diagrams to give a technical explanation of the application layer protocols and how they relate to the TCP/IP protocols. Notes: You should include: TCP/IP HTTP FTP DNS SMTP
