What is this course about? 1.1 Course description You will build on skills acquired in the previous course by iteration and by the introduction of additional competencies in Responsive Website Design (RWD) for multiple devices, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and cpanel processes. This course introduces students to the content management system (CMS). On successful completion of the is course you will be able to design and develop a dynamic website that is targeted towards an identified and described major user group, supports the multi-device site visitor and complies with current industry standards for fluid design. 1.2 Course content The course content covers: Prototyping, UX persona development Usability testing User Experience Design (UxD) The WordPress CMS WordPress child theming The cpanel interface File Transfer Protocol (FTP) The client-server model architecture Remote hosting 2. Specific Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this course you should be able to: Apply markup (HTML), styling (CSS) and dynamic code (PHP) to produce valid webpages Apply user interface design principles to create engaging and aesthetic user interfaces and digital assets. Communicate and justify the design and functionality of a UI/UX design to a professional standard Utilise industry tools and methods to research, plan, prototype, build and test a responsive website Demonstrate understanding of user and client needs in professional website design and production Correctly engage with the systems, programs and technologies that underpin the internet. Product: Online portfolio Format: You will complete a series of exercises that explore different properties of HTML, CSS and PHP. The exercises will be collated as a website and uploaded to hosting. Full instructions and exercises are available in the task 1 folder on Blackboard. Criteria Syntactically and semantically correct code Efficiency of code or markup Correct formatting, filing and naming of files and assets Visually appealing responses that adhere to user interface design principles Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level

4 Page 4 Problem solving Communication Applying technologies Assessment Task 2: Static, responsive website design and build Goal: Research, plan, design and develop a static responsive website. Product: Static, responsive website and report Format: You will be supplied with a brief from a client outlining their goals and needs for their website along with content for the site. Using industry tools and methods like competitor analysis, user personas and wire framing you will research and plan the website before moving to design. In the design phase you will consider both user and client requirements and employ effective user interface design principles. You will then develop the website for multiple devices utilising modern, semantic markup. User testing and feedback should form an integral part of your development process. The site will be submitted with a client report that details the research and decision making process behind the finished site. Full brief and supporting information available on Blackboard. Criteria Evidence of research strategically informing design. Demonstrated understanding of user and client requirements. Interface is functional, aesthetically pleasing and employs UI and UX best practices. Underlying code and markup demonstrates understanding of modern web development principles. Effective communication of decision making and design process. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Communication Applying technologies Problem solving Assessment Task 3: Dynamic, responsive website design and build Goal: Install and customise a CMS driven website. Product: Wordpress website and client report. Format: You will be supplied with a brief from a client outlining their goals and needs for their website along with content for the site. You'll install and customise a responsive website utilising the WordPress CMS. Following the process of research, planning, design, development and testing you'll produce a finished website that meets client and user needs while adhering to industry best practice. This project will focus on understanding the nature of dynamic, data driven websites. Criteria Evidence of research strategically informing design. Demonstrated understanding of user and client requirements. Interface is functional, aesthetically pleasing and employs UI and UX best practices. Effective communication of decision making and design process. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Applying technologies Communication Organisation Problem solving

5 Page Additional assessment requirements Plagiarism In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks, when submitted to Blackboard, are electronically checked through SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late.to request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6. How is the course offered? 6.1 Directed study hours On campus computer workshop: 3 hours per week 6.2 Teaching semester/session(s) offered Semester Course activities Teaching Module What key concepts/content will I learn? 1 Advanced HTML and CSS: a look at more advanced techniques for creating responsive designs using HTML and CSS, including media queries, flex box and grid. 2 Responsive UI design: researching, planning, designing, building and testing responsive websites using HTML, CSS and PHP. Looking at user and client requirements. Design patterns. 3 Content Management Systems: an introduction to Content Management Systems, looking specifically at WordPress and the associated systems and technologies - MySQL, CPanel, PHP, ftp.
