Assessment and grading criteria To achieve a pass grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to: P1 outline the web architecture and components which enable internet and web functionality P2 explain the user side and server side factors that influence the performance of a website P3 explain the security risks and protection mechanisms involved in website performance P4 using appropriate design tools, design an interactive website to meet a client need P5 create an interactive website to meet a client need. To achieve a merit grade the evidence must show that, in addition to the pass criteria, the learner is able to: M1 explain the role of web architecture in website communications M2 explain the tools and techniques used in the creation of an interactive website M3 improve the effectiveness of a website on the basis of a client review. To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that, in addition to the pass and merit criteria, the learner is able to: D1 explain the role of the TCP/IP protocol and how it links to application layer protocols D2 discuss the techniques that can be used on web pages to aid user access to information D3 demonstrate that a created website meets the defined requirements and achieves the defined purpose.

Assignment brief The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of the web architecture and components which enable internet and web functionality, factors that affect performance and security issues. Scenario You have a new post at a local website company as a junior web developer. Your first task is to produce a website for a local company. There are several jobs to be finished, therefore you have a choice. Choose one of the organisations that are described on the job-list and carry out each of the tasks detailed below for that web-site. Task 1 (P4) For P4, learners need to carry out the planning work for a multi-page, two-way interactive website. Particular attention should be paid to making sure learners define the requirements and purpose of the site clearly and realistically, as this is extended into D3. The plan should take the form of annotated drawings as it would in a normal web design process. Design a two-way interactive web-site for one of the organisations given on the job-list. You should have carefully reviewed competitor web-sites and utilise good ideas from these and improve on areas which you think have been poorly completed. Hint: Your plan should include: A clear and realistic definition of the requirements and purpose of the site. (This could be in the form of an to your line manager, informing them of the job you have chosen and the purpose and requirements of the site). A domain name for the site A design table, outlining the details of each page: page name, description of page content, required images and web technologies used. A storyboard with clearly annotated drawings, one page of illustration per page of the site. A site map showing the links between pages

Task 2: (P5) For P5, learners need to build a multi-page website. Any method of creation can be used; the unit is non-specific on software or techniques. The website should feature two-way interactivity. Prime evidence for this is the website itself in electronic form. However, annotated prints of the website and a tutor statement of authenticity will also suffice. Create the chosen website design that includes the following as a minimum specification: a. Minimum of 5 pages, including Home page, Contact us page. b. Text (could be a suitable heading followed by Lorem Ipsum ) c. Images d. Formatting techniques e. Format standardisation f. Correct alignment on all pages g. Hyperlinks h. An example of an interactivity

Task 3: (M2) For M2, learners need to be able to explain the tools and techniques that can be used to make a website. This will work best alongside P4 or P5, as learners will have the chance to talk about what they have done to meet the pass criteria. Learners must show a strong, accurate understanding of the tools they have used, and be able to articulate clearly the techniques they have employed. This criterion should be evidenced by a short presentation or an extension to the website. Prepare a short presentation explaining the tools and techniques that you have used when creating your web-site. You should name the tools and explain how each one enabled you to fulfil the brief. You should need one slide for each technique or tool described, plus one slide as an introduction.

Task 4: (M3) M3 can work best as an extension of P5. Learners must show that they have adapted and improved the website that they worked on for P4, in measurable ways. Test and review your website. You should carry out some basic functionality tests on different browsers and prepare a questionnaire for users or the client. Alternatively this could be prepared as a Client sign off form. You should ask your peers or the tutor to act as clients. Website testing should include: Browsers Demonstrate how the pages are rendered in different browsers. Resolutions demonstration in report Show evidence of testing using an appropriate method in your report. Demonstrate how you have improved your website based on the review. This can be demonstrated through several printouts of various versions of the website, each should show concerns or limitations in the design and how the design has been improved. Task 5: (D2) For D2, learners should consider design and functionality to suggest ways of improving accessibility and ease-of-use on the defined website. Produce a short report to extend your review of your web-site to include accessibility. Consider the web-site from the point-of-view of disabled users, someone who has poor vision, hearing or other impairment (including loss of limbs), how easy would they find it to use your site? What could you do to improve their access (i.e. make the site easier for them to use)?

Task 6: (D3) For D3, learners must demonstrate they have created a website which meets the defined requirements and purpose. This can be evidenced through a series of annotated screen grabs. Document how the website meets the defined requirements and achieves the defined purpose. This criterion is measured on how closely you have met the user s requirements. Providing comprehensive information in the requirements, design improvements and versioning can aid the understanding of how you have met the needs. You should present this in the form of a short report or table, using screen-grabs to illustrate each point. Purpose/requirement Explanation of purpose/requirement Disability access To provide access to all users and abide by the W3C rules Audience level Website aimed at... Commercial/noncommercial This is a commercial website advertising... Example: Table 1. Achieved requirements example How requirement is achieved See fig. 1 Evidence
