2 Manage Content on Kindle (1st Generation) Use the Home Screen Use the Content Manager Choose Show and Sort Options Perform a Search Find Dictionary Definitions The Kindle Home screen has several options for displaying your content. Advanced content management options are available from the Kindle Content Manager. Use the Home Screen Your Home screen serves as a personal bookshelf for all your reading materials as well as a starting point to access other Kindle features. You can select "Show and Sort" at the top of the page to change how your content is displayed and help find the item you'd like to read. To start reading, place the cursor next to the desired title and click the select wheel. Content on the Home Screen Kindle Books: Books display by title and author. A progress indicator under the title shows how long a book is and how much you've read. Kindle Periodicals: Periodicals display as a single issue or as a subscription. Periodicals are indicated by the white selection point. Select the point to see all issues of the periodical on your Kindle. Kindle Blogs: Blogs appear on the Home screen as a single entry. As additional blog content arrives, it is added to the entry. Audiobooks from Audible.com: Audiobooks display by title and author and are identified by a speaker icon. Personal Documents: Personal documents display on the Home screen by the name you gave the file. The Home Screen Menu Select the Menu option on the Home screen to see options: Shop in Kindle Store: Go to the Kindle Store. Check for New Items: Connect to the Kindle Store to download any of your newly available items. Settings: Go to the Settings screen. See Adjust Your Kindle Settings for more information. Content Manager: Go to the Content Manager for managing content on your Kindle, an SD memory card, and Amazon. Experimental: Contains Kindle (1st Generation) functionality currently under development. See Experimental Features for Kindle (1st Generation) for more information.

3 Use the Content Manager The Content Manager displays every item that you have purchased or downloaded to your Kindle. The location of each item is indicated by a tag under the item's title: Kindle: The item is currently in the Kindle's memory. SD Card: The item is currently stored on an optional SD memory card. Amazon: The item is not on your Kindle but available to download again. The Content Manager Menu Select Menu on the Content Manager screen to see options for managing your Kindle content: Home: Go to your Home screen. Shop in Kindle Store: Go to the Kindle Store. Check for New Items: Connect to the Kindle Store to download any of your newly available items. Select All Items on Page: Select all items on the page for moving multiple files. Deselect All Items on Page: Deselect any items on the page you selected previously. Move to SD Memory Card: Move the selected items the optional SD memory card. Move to Kindle Memory: Move the selected items to your Kindle memory. Remove Selected Items: Remove the selected items from your Kindle or SD memory card. Move or Remove Kindle Content Books you purchase from Amazon.com and download to your Kindle are stored in Your Kindle Library on Amazon.com. If you delete an item that is stored in your Kindle library from your Kindle, you can download it again. To move or remove a Kindle item: 1. Select Content Manager from the Home screen menu. 2. Use the select wheel or the select options from the menu to choose items from the list. Selected items are identified by an X in the box to the right of the title. 3. Choose the desired option from the Content Manager menu. 4. If you are removing an item or items, select OK to confirm deletion from memory. The transfer status of items is indicated by location icons under the title. If you are moving items from Amazon.com to your Kindle, turn the wireless switch on the back of Kindle to the ON position.

4 Choose Show and Sort Options When you are on the Kindle Home screen or inside the Content Manager, a Show and Sort option appears at the top of the page.. To change the Show option: 1. Scroll the cursor to the Show and Sort option at the top of the screen and click the select wheel. 2. In the top portion of the Show and Sort menu, select the types of content you want to display using the select wheel. To change the "Sort" option: 1. Scroll the cursor to the Show and Sort option at the top of the screen and click the select wheel. 2. On the bottom portion of the menu, select the sort criteria you want to use with the select wheel. Perform a Search You can search content on your Kindle, the default dictionary, and the Kindle Store. For information on performing searches on the Internet, go to Experimental Features on Kindle (1st Generation). To perform a search: 1. Press the Search key in the bottom right corner of your keyboard. 2. Enter your search term or terms using the keyboard. (255 character limit). 3. Scroll to Go and press the select wheel. The results from items on your Kindle appear at the top of the Search Results page. The results include all instances of your search term in the books, newspapers, magazines, personal files, and the default dictionary on your Kindle. To view search results from your reading: 1. Perform a search. 2. Click the title of the item in the search results using the select wheel. If the item doesn't appear or there is more than one page of results available, select "See all # results". If the title you are looking for doesn't appear, the search term was not found in that item. 3. Use the Next Page button to page through the instances in the selected title. Instances of your search term are arranged by page number and displayed in their context on the page where they appear. 4. Select the desired instance with the scroll wheel. This action takes you away from the search results and into the content of the selected title on the page number chosen. 5. Use the Back button to return to the search results or your reading.

5 Find Dictionary Definitions If you are reading and encounter an unfamiliar term, Kindle allows you to look up the term directly from your reading material. You can also perform a search and choose the default dictionary from the search results. To find a definition using the Lookup feature: 1. Move the cursor to the line that contains the word and press the select wheel. 2. Select Lookup from the menu that appears. 3. Place the cursor next to a word and press the select wheel to see the complete definition. 4. When you are done, select Close to return to your reading. To find a definition from search results: 1. Perform a search. 2. Select # definitions found next to Dictionary in the search results. 3. Browse the available definitions on the following pages. If your word has multiple definitions, there may be more than one page of information. 4. Place the cursor next to a definition and press the select wheel to see the complete definition. 5. Use the Back button to return to the search results or your reading.
