2 Step 1: Download and install Adobe Digital Editions FIRST TIME STEP ONLY If this is the first time downloading e-books to your pc, you will need to download and install the Adobe Digital Editions software before you can read e-books on your computer. If you already have ADE on your pc, skip to step 2. Downloading ADE 1. Go to 2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Adobe Digital Editions. 3. Click on Windows (8.24MB). 4. When a window pops up asking if you want to save the file, click Save File. Figure 1 Installing ADE 1. From the desktop, click the Start ( or ) button. 2. Open File Explorer. a. If you are using Windows 7 click Documents (Figure 2). b. If you are using Windows 10 click File Explorer (Figure 3). Figure 2 Figure 3

3 3. When File Explorer opens, click Downloads in the top left corner and then double-click ADE Installer. Figure 4 4. When a window pops up asking if you want to run this file, click Run (Figure 5). Figure 5 5. Agree to the terms and continue to click Next. Then click Install. 6. When it says it has completed, click Close. Creating an Adobe ID After you install the software, you should activate it with an Adobe ID (this is required if you are going to transfer e-books to an e-reader device). 1. Open ADE by double-clicking its icon ( ) on the desktop. 2. Click Help in the top left corner and then click Authorize Computer (Figure 6). Figure 6

4 3. When the Computer Authorization window appears, click Create an Adobe ID (Figure 7). Figure 7 4. This will take you to a form on Adobe s website. Fill out the form and click Sign up. 5. Go back to ADE. If necessary, repeat step Sign in using the ID and password you just created. 7. Click Authorize. Step 2: Download e-books from OverDrive to your PC 1. Log in to your OverDrive account. Go to Click Get ebooks from OverDrive. In the top right corner, click Sign in. Select Central Virginia Regional Library. Enter your library card number (found on the back of your library card). 2. In the top right corner click My account and then click Loans. This will show you all the items you have borrowed. 3. Find the item you want to download and click CHOOSE A FORMAT (Figure 8). 4. Click EPUB ebook. 5. A dialog box will open asking if you want to open or save the file. Select Open with and then click OK (Figure 9). 6. ADE will open and begin downloading the e-book. When it is finished it will display the e-book in the Reading View. Now you can read the e-book in ADE on your computer.

5 Figure 8 Figure 9 Step 3: Using Adobe Digital Editions When you open ADE the Library view is displayed. The Library view displays an overview of the downloaded e-books in your collection. Here are a few things to note about Library view (Figure 10): 1. All the e-books you have downloaded will appear here. Double-click an e-book to read it. 2. Click Sort by Title to change how the e-books in your collection are listed. The other two buttons allow you to toggle between thumbnail view and list view. 3. Quickly access the last e-book you were reading. 4. The default bookshelves include Not Read, Purchased, and Recently Added. You can add your own bookshelves by clicking +. To add an e-book to a bookshelf, right-click the e-book in Library view, hover over Copy to Bookshelf and click on the bookshelf where you want to add the e-book.

6 Figure 10 How to read an e-book in ADE While in Library view, double-click the e-book you wish to read. 1. To turn the page, click the left or right arrows below the book or use the table of contents on the left. 2. If you want to bookmark the page you are on, click the bookmark icon at the top. To view your bookmarks, click the bookmarks button just above the contents. 3. To change the size of the font, click the Change Font Size button in the top right corner. 4. For additional options, click Reading in the top left corner.

7 2 3 Figure 11 1 How to transfer e-books to an e-reader device 1. Connect the e-reader to your computer. 2. Open ADE on your computer. Make sure you are in Library view. Your e-reader should show up under Devices on the left (Figure 12). Figure Click on the e-book you want to transfer and then drag it over to your device (Figure 13). Once the transfer is complete, you can disconnect your device and start reading.
