ebooks at the Library Computers and ereaders One of the newest developments in reading is the electronic book, or ebook. An ebook is a digital copy of a book that can be read on a computer, dedicated ebook reader (ereader) or other digital devices. While these devices do not always provide the same reading experience as a true book, especially when using a computer, they can be very convenient. Most ereaders can hold hundreds or thousands of ebooks in less space than a single hardback book. ebooks are readily available from online book sellers such as Amazon ( and Barnes and Noble ( Many libraries are also making ebooks available to their patrons through their online catalogs. Patrons can search for available titles, check them out with their library card, download them to their computer and then transfer them to their ereader. Audiobooks are another type of digital download available from many libraries. They can be checked out and downloaded just like ebooks, but can only be used on devices that support audio playback. Some ereaders do not support audio playback and therefore do not support audiobooks. Audiobooks are not covered in this handout. ebook Compatibility ebooks come in several different formats. Unfortunately, not all ereaders work with all formats. The most commonly supported formats are Adobe EPUB, Open EPUB and Adobe PDF and Kindle Books. Overdrive, a maker of ebook software used by our library, provides a list of devices and whether or not they support the ebook formats used by the library at If you are considering buying an ereader specifically to read ebooks from the library, check the list carefully to be sure the device is supported. Some of the more popular devices that support library ebooks are: Windows Computers Mac Computers Barnes and Noble Nook Amazon Kindle (see separate handout) Kobo ereader Smartphones (see separate handout) Digital Tablets (see separate handout) Required Software If you want to load ebooks onto an ereader, depending on the brand, you may need to download and install the free Adobe Digital Editions app onto your computer. This app allows you to download digital books to your computer, manage your library, read the ebooks on your computer, and transfer your ebooks to supported devices, such as the Nook or Kobo ereaders. If you just want to read ebooks on your computer and have Windows 8 or Windows 10 and do not want to transfer them to another device, you can use either Adobe Digital Editions or the OverDrive app, which is available through the Microsoft App Store. At the present time, the Overdrove app does not allow you to 1

transfer ebooks from your computer to an ereader. While slightly different in appearance, the app works the same as the OverDrive app for tablets and smartphones. See the handout ebooks at the Library Digital Tablets, Smartphones, and ipod Touches for information on how to use the app. Most ebooks can also be read using just a web browser on your computer. If you want to read your ebooks this way, you do not need the Adobe Digital Editions or OverDrive apps. However, most dedicated ereaders do not have web browsers, so this is not an option for them. See the section on OverDrive Read at the end of the handout for details. Downloading and Installing Adobe Digital Editions 1. Open your web browser and go to the Ohio Digital Library at 2. Left click Help at the top right of the page. 3. Left click the Digital Media/Applications button on the Help page to go to the Download page. 4. On the Download page, left click Adobe Digital Editions. This will take you to the Adobe Digital Editions web page. 5. Left click Download at the right end of the menu bar near the top of the page. 6. On the next page select the version you need, either Macintosh or Windows. 7. Depending on your web browser, you may be given the choice to run the app (Internet Explorer and Edge) or the app may be automatically saved (most other browsers). If you are given a choice, choose Run. If the app is saved, you will need to look on your desktop or in your Downloads folder for it and run it from there. Some web browsers allow you to run downloaded programs directly 2

from within them. For example, in Chrome, you can run it by clicking the Adobe Digital Editions icon in the lower left corner of the browser s window after it has been downloaded. 8. When the app begins, accept the License Agreement and then click Next in the lower right corner. 9. You will then be asked which components you want to install. Accept the default by clicking Next in the lower right corner. 10. You must next tell the computer where to install the app. Again, accept the default by left clicking Install in the lower right corner. 11. If an offer to install an additional app appears, uncheck the box marked Include and then click Next. 12. Wait for the app to be installed on your computer. A progress bar will keep you informed on how the process is proceeding. When the status says Completed, left click the Close button in the lowerright corner. 13. After you click the Close button, Adobe Digital Editions will automatically open. Setting Up Adobe Digital Editions You must authorize your computer if you want to transfer ebooks from your computer to an ereader. You only have to do this once. To authorize your computer, you need a free Adobe ID or OverDrive account. If you do not already have one or the other, you will need to create one. If you do not plan on transferring your ebooks to another device, you do not need either account to authorize your computer. Authorizing Adobe Digital Editions 1. Open Adobe Digital Editions. 2. Left click Help in the upper left corner of the app s window to open the Help menu. 3. Select Authorize computer at the top of the menu. 4. 5 You can now return to the authorization screen for Adobe Digital Editions (it should still be opened) and finish the authorization process. Your computer is now ready. However, if you want to transfer ebooks from your computer to an ereader, you must also authorize it. You only have to do this once for each ereader. You can do this now or wait until you are ready to transfer an ebook. 1. Connect your ereader to your computer with an appropriate cable. 2. Wait for your computer to recognize it. Depending on your ereader, you may have to enable it to work with your computer by way of a confirmation screen on the ereader. 3. Open Adobe Digital Editions if it is not already running. (If there is no icon for it on your desktop, look in the All apps menu.) 4. Adobe Digital Editions should recognize that your device is not authorized and start the Device Setup Assistant. If it does not find your device, check to be sure it is connected correctly to your computer and then close and restart Adobe Digital Editions. 5. Left click the Authorize Device button. 6. After a short pause, a confirmation screen should appear. 7. Left click the Finished button on the confirmation screen. You are now ready to check out and download ebooks from the library and transfer them to your ereader. The Ohio Digital Library Now that you have your computer and ereader ready, it is time to get some ebooks. Begin by returning to the Ohio Digital Library at From here you can find ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, and videos. (You can also locate, checkout, and download ebooks through the regular library catalog at but the process goes a little more smoothly when using the Ohio Digital Library.) As mentioned earlier, this handout only covers ebooks. Please contact the library if you need help with the other formats. A Menu button, Account button, Help button, and Search box are found in the options at the top right of the Ohio Digital Library page. Menu Left click this button to hide or display the Browsing menu (see below). Account Left click this button to view and manage your holds, checked out items, and settings. Help Left click this button if you need help with the Ohio Digital Library. 5

Search This box enables you to perform quick searches for titles, authors, or subjects. See the section on searching later in the handout for details. The Browsing Menu appears in the blue area below the options bar. This menu allows you to browse the catalog by category (ebooks, Audiobooks, etc.), Genre (Mystery, Western, etc.), or subject (Art, True Crime, etc.). If you do not see the Browsing menu, left click the Menu button on the options bar. Featured Collections are displayed below the Browsing Menu. These may include new items, currently available items, and other items of interest. The selections change regularly. Options Browsing Menu View More Featured Collections Locating an ebook There are several ways to look for ebooks. Use whichever method works best for you. Browse the Featured Collections 1. Scroll down the page to see all the featured titles. They are grouped by collections, such as New ebooks. 2. Left click View more to see additional titles in a collection. 3. Left click a book jacket or an item s title to view detailed information for it (see Search Results below). Browse by Category 1. In the Browsing Menu, left click a genre under ebook Fiction or subject under ebook Nonfiction. 2. Scroll down to browse the available titles. 3. Select your preferred viewing format with the view controls. Cover view is the default. You may prefer List as it provides more details about each item. 4. Use the page selector buttons to navigate through the pages of results. They are located at both the top right and bottom right of the search results. (You will need to scroll down the page to see all the titles.) 6

Menu Button Search Box Advanced Search Views Page Selectors Jacket Title 5. Left click a book jacket or an item s title to see detailed information for it. Notice that the Browsing menu disappears when you are browsing. Left click the Menu button in the options bar and it will reappear. Use the Search Box 1. Left click inside the Search Box at the top right of the window. 2. Type a title, author, subject, or keyword(s) into the search box. Search Button 3. 8 Available Items Only Search Search Results ebooks are very popular and it can often be difficult finding a title that is checked in. Unless you selected Show only titles with copies available in the Advanced Search, you will often find that most of the ebooks displayed in your search results are checked out. You can quickly tell which titles are available by looking for the dark book symbol in the upper right corner of the title s cover picture. (Other formats have different symbols: headphones for audiobooks, notes for music, and a film clip for movies.) If the book symbol is black, then the item is available. Checked Out Checked In Whenever you perform a search, select a browsing category, or expand a featured collection (click the View more button), you are presented with a page of results. This page displays all matching titles displayed in the Cover view. At times there may be many pages of results, which can make it difficult to find the exact title for which you are looking. Fortunately, the results page also includes filters and other tools to help you narrow your search. 8

Refining Your Results There are a number of ways to refine your search results. You can use each of them individually or in combination to refine your results. One of the first things you may want to do is select ebook at the upper left corner of the results. This will limit your results to just ebooks. This can often cut the number of results in half. Type Sorting Currently Available Jacket Title Filters Search You can also elect to view only the titles that are currently available by selecting Available Now a little further down the left side of the page. Select All Titles to once more see all the titles that match your search criteria. Sort Order The results are initially sorted by Relevancy; the ones that most closely relate to your search terms are listed first. However, you may find one of the other sort orders more useful. Relevancy The titles are listed with the ones most closely related to your search term(s) at the top. This is the default. Title You can sort the titles alphabetically either A Z or Z A. Author You can sort by the author s last name either A Z or Z A. Release Date This sorts the results by the date the titles were originally published as an ebook with the newest ones first. This date may not be the same as the date the book was original published as a hard copy. 9

Added to Site This sorts the results by when the titles were added to the catalog, with the oldest ones first. Most Popular This choice sorts the results based on how often they have been checked out. Filters Filters are probably the most powerful tools available to refine your results. Many filters can be used in combination. A few, though, limit the other filters you can use in conjunction with them. Format Use this filter to view only the title that are in a specific format. If you choose a format that is compatible with your device, you can avoid accidentally checking out ebooks that you cannot read on it. You can only select one format at a time. Subject This limits your results to a specific subject, such as travel, or genre, such as romance. Publisher Use this filter to select your favorite publisher. Language The majority of ebooks are in English, but there are a few in other languages. Rating Ratings are set by readers. Readers can give titles one to five stars, with five stars being the best rating. Not all ebooks have been rated. Device You can select your device from the list and then only the format(s) that are compatible with it will be displayed. This is a good choice if you do not know which formats your device supports. Interest Level This filter allows you to select the targeted age group. ATOS Level This is a numbering system used to rate the readability of a book. The higher the number, the more difficult the reading level. Lexile Measure This is another rating system for book readability. Again, the higher the number, the more difficult the book. Reading Level This filter limits the results to those appropriate for a specific grade level. Your selected filters are displayed near the top left of the page. To remove a filter, left click the X in front of it. Search within the Results The search box beneath the list of filters allows you to search within the results. For example, if your initial search was for an author who has written many books, you could use this search box to find a specific title by that author. Detailed Information for a Title Left click the book jacket or title of an item in the search results to see detailed information about it, place a hold on it, or to check it out. In some cases, you may be asked to sign in before you can view the full details. The top half of the details page displays the book jacket, title, author, and a brief description of the ebook (left click the chevron beneath the description to read more). You can left click the author to see additional books written by him or her. On the right side of the page is displayed the Available Formats. Check this to see if the title is available in a format that is compatible with your device. The Subject categories and/or Genres to which 10

the ebook belongs are listed next. These are links that will display other titles in those categories when left clicked. The number of available copies (ones that are checked in) and the total number of copies available in the library system are shown at the bottom of the right column. A large blue Borrow or Place a Hold button is prominently displayed to the right of the book jacket. Beneath the book jacket is a Sample button. When you left click this, a sample, usually all or part of the first chapter, opens in your web browser. If you scroll down the details page, you may see additional information such as a full description of the ebook, author information, and reviews. Formats Read Sample Subject or Genre Copies See More Place a Hold If a title is checked out, you can place a hold on it. This will add your name to the list of people who are waiting for it. You can have 15 items on hold at any one time. 1. Left click the title or book jacket of the item of which you want to place a hold to go to the details page. (If you do not need to view details about the item, you can point to its book jacket and then left click the Place Hold button that appears.) 2. On the details page, left click the Place Hold button. You will then be directed to the Sign In page (If you are already signed in, go to step 9). 11

3. On the Sign In page, left click [select library] to see a list of available libraries. 4. Select Washington County Public Library System (SEO) from the list. 5. Enter your entire library card number. Do not include any spaces. Library Card PIN Sign In Remember Me 6. Enter your PIN (usually the last four digits of the phone number you used to get your library card). 7. If you wish, select Remember my login information on this device and you will be able to sign in faster the next time (Do not do this on a public computer.) 8. Left click the Sign In button. 9. Check all the information on the Hold Confirmation page to be sure it is correct. 10. For added convenience, select Automatically borrow this title when it becomes available. 11. Left click the Place Hold button at the bottom of the page. 12. On the next screen you are given the option to return to browsing or view your holds. When the ebook becomes available, you will receive an notification. If you did not select Automatically borrow this title when it becomes available, the ebook will be held for you for 72 hours. If you do not check it out within 72 hours, it goes to the next person in line. You can only have ten items checked out at any one time (thirteen if you include magazines). Therefore, if you already have the maximum number of items checked out and do not wish to return any of them, you will have to skip the hold. If you select Automatically borrow this title when it becomes available, your item will automatically be checked out to you unless you already have the maximum number of items checked out. 12

Left click Confirm & Download at the bottom of the format menu (It appears after you select a format.) Once you download a title, you cannot change its format. 14. After a short pause, your web browser may ask if you want to Open or Save the file. Choose Open. If your browser automatically saves the ebook, you will have to locate the file (look on the desktop or in the downloads folder) and double left click it to open it. 15. Adobe Digital Editions will open and the ebook will be imported into it. As mentioned earlier, you can only have 10 digital items checked out at a time. This includes ebooks, audio books, music, and videos in any combination. (You can also check out an additional three magazines.) Most items have a 21 day lending period; however, some items, especially popular titles, may have a 14 day lending period. When the lending period ends, the item is automatically returned. Once an ebook expires, you can no longer open it. In some cases, you may be able to renew your item. If there are no holds on the item, a Renew button will 13

Adobe Digital Editions ebooks from the library that are in PDF or EPUB format require Adobe Digital Editions or the Overdrive app in order to be viewed on a computer. If you want to read ebooks in the Kindle format, you can install the free Kindle app found in the Microsoft Store. See the handout on ebooks on Kindles for details on using Kindle books. Adobe Digital Editions is an easy to use program that allows you to manage your ebook library, read your ebooks on your computer, and transfer ebooks to authorized ereaders. The major controls are across the top of the app s window and along the left side. Add New Bookshelf Menu Bar Read Button Bookshelves Sort and View Buttons Item in the Selected Bookshelf File Menu Located on at the left end of the menu bar, this menu presents a variety of commands to manage your ebooks. However, you will find that most of your management will be done directly in the Digital Editions window. Library Menu Also located on the menu bar, this menu holds view and sort options. Help Menu Located to the right of the Library menu, this menu gives you access to the Digital Editions Help files. Read Button If available, you can left click this button to start reading a selected ebook or return to where you left off. You can also double left click an ebook to read it. (If you do not see the Read button, single left click a title to select it.) Library Button This button replaces the Read button when you are reading an ebook. Left click it to return to the Library view. Library 15

Sort Menu This drop down menu allows you to choose how you want to sort your ebooks. It is located near the top right corner of the app s window. List View Button This button is to the right of the Thumbnail View button. Left click it to view your ebooks in list form. Bookshelves These are folders displayed along the left side of the window that hold different categories of ebooks. Bookshelves can make it easier to organize your ebooks if you have a large collection. Titles can appear in more than one bookshelf. For example, an ebook from the library may show up in the All Items, Borrowed, and Recently Read bookshelves. Manage Your ebooks Using Adobe Digital Editions By default, your ebooks will be organized into six default bookshelves, All Items Borrowed Recently Read Not Read Purchased Recently Added However, you can create additional bookshelves, such as Mysteries, to better organize your ebooks. When you move a title to multiple bookshelves, you do not create multiple copies of it. You are only creating an entry for the title in each bookshelf. Transferring ebooks to Your ereader You need to use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer your ebooks to some brands of ereader, such as the Nook and Kobo ereader. However, it is not used with Amazon Kindles, digital tablets, smartphones (See separate handouts). Before you can transfer an ebook to your device, the device must be authorized as described at the beginning of this handout. 16

Transferring an ebook to an ereader 1. Plug your device into your computer using its USB cable. 2. Follow the instructions for your device to allow it to communicate with your computer. This may require tapping a confirmation message on its screen. 3. Start Adobe Digital Editions if it is not already running. 4. Locate your device in the Devices section (above your bookshelves). If it does not appear, be sure it is connected to your computer correctly. Closing down and restarting Adobe Digital Editions may also help. 5. Tap the Digital Editions folder. 9. Tap the icon for the ebook to begin reading it. Returning ebooks Early When you check out an ebook, you usually have 21 days to read it. At the end of that time, the ebook is automatically returned. It may still appear in your library, but you will not be able to open it. If you finish an ebook before it has expired, you can return it using Adobe Digital Editions. This allows someone else to check it out and gives you the opportunity to check out another ebook if you were at your limit. Returning ebooks Early 1. Start Adobe Digital Editions. 2. Locate the ebook you want to return. 3. Right click the book s thumbnail. 4. Select Return Borrowed Item from the menu that appears. When you return an ebook early through Adobe Digital Editions it may not be immediately removed from your ereader. You may be able to continue reading it on your ereader until the next time you sync it with your computer or the lending period runs out. OverDrive Read OverDrive Read is a feature that allows you to check out and read an ebook without needing to download it. The only software required is a web browser. This means you can use nearly any computer, digital tablet, or smartphone to read an OverDrive Read book. (Unfortunately, many ereaders do not have Internet capabilities and cannot be used with OverDrive Read.) A nice feature of OverDrive Read books is that you can continue to read from where you left off in the book when you switch from one device to another. The first time you start to read an OverDrive Read book, you must be connected to the Internet. Afterward, if you download the book to your web browser, you can continue to read it even when no Internet connection is available. (This feature is not supported on all devices.) However, your book will no longer sync with your other devices. (You must be connected to the Internet for syncing to work.) 18

Checking Out OverDrive Read Books 1. Go to the Ohio Digital Library. 2. Perform a search as you normally would. 3. Select OverDrive Read from the Format Filter on the left side of the page or on the Advanced Search page. (You can skip this step if you want, as most ebooks are now available in the OverDrive Read format.) 4. Select a title. 5. Click the Borrow button. 6. Sign in if requested. You will automatically go to your Bookshelf. 7. Left click the Read button to the right of the title s book jacket. 8. Your OverDrive Read book will automatically open in your default web browser. 9. Bookmark the page so you can easily return to the book. Be sure to bookmark the page so you can easily return to it. If you do not bookmark it, you will need to sign into your Ohio Digital Library account, go to your Bookshelf, and click the Read button to return to it. Reading OverDrive Read Books Off Line 1. Open a web browser. 2. Navigate to the Ohio Digital Library catalog. 3. Sign into your account. 4. Go to your Bookshelf and open your OverDrive Read book. (if you had previously bookmarked the book, you can use it to return to the ebook.) 5. Left click the Options button in the upper left corner of the screen to open the Options pane. 6. Left click Offline Access near the bottom of the Options pane. 7. Left click the Download button and wait for the book to download. Options Download Offline Access 19

8. Create a bookmark for the book. This will vary from one web browser to another, but is often done by left clicking a star at the right end of the address bar. 9. While still connected to the Internet, use the bookmark you just created to open the OverDrive Read book. Sign in to OverDrive using your library card and PIN. 10. You can now continue to read the book iwthout an Internet connection. If you download the OverDrive Read book to your web browser for off line reading, you must use the bookmark you created for it to return to it. You may delete the bookmark for the ebook when it expires or when you are finished with it. If you downloaded the book for offline reading it will eventually disappear on its own. Using OverDrive Read books offline has some limitations. Depending on the size of the book, you may not be able to download all of it into your web browser. This is especially true for books that have a lot of illustrations. Also, the book may be purged from the browser s cache (the memory area where the book is stored) before you finish it. This might happen if you reset your browser or save other web pages for offline viewing. Returning OverDrive Read Books Early You can return OverDrive Read books early by clicking the Return Title button which appears below the Read button on your Ohio Digital Library bookshelf page. However, if you download the ebook to your computer or device, you can no longer return it from here. (The button disappears.) You have to return it through Adobe Digital Editions or the OverDrive app. Even if you download an ebook to your computer or device, you can still read it using OverDrive Read. However, the copy on your computer or device will not sync with the copy you are reading with OverDrive Read. 20
